Creating Your Own Customized Aeron Chair. It really only takes three minutes!
The Aeron Chair, Herman Miller’s timeless and perhaps most recognizable design, is replete with historical references and touchstones. A symbol of the dot com bubble with a spot in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection, the chair has been featured in countless popular outlets, from books to television. The story of this chair is as well known as its look. Simple, black, clean, contemporary, comfortable.
At the time of its release, the Aeron was utterly unique. It was sleek, without foam or stuffing, and featured several design elements radically different from the average office chair. The Aeron Chair's seat curved upwards at the edges, cradling the hips and creating a comfort pocket for the user. The lip of the seat curved downward, saving thighs from the wear and tear of eight-hour days at the desk, and increasing user circulation. The back of the chair didn't subscribe to straight lines either; it had been designed for support, curving inward to the small of the back then fanning out to the shoulders, keeping posture erect and comfort intact. All of these design elements are, today, taken for granted in the world of modern furniture. You can hardly get away from Aeron's original revolutionary design when you look at the task and office chairs being turned out in greater and greater numbers in the present. Almost without exception, the modern chairs of today owe a significant debt to the Aeron Chair.
But what made the Aeron such an important addition to the cannon of modern design wasn’t always its appearance, but rather, its adaptability. Though we know it for a sleek, black design, the brilliance of the Herman Miller Aeron Chair is its ability to be adapted and customized to any body, any workplace, any aesthetic. Adaptability leads to increased comfort, different kinds of support, better mood and higher productivity. These positive associations are just one reason that the Aeron Chair is so indebted to the ancient and often overlooked science of ergonomics.
Ergonomics is the study of how efficiently individuals interact with their workplace, and a significant part of that is identifying healthy ways to work. In a 2010 Bloomberg BusinessWeek article, the University of Missouri microbiologist Marc Hamilton said, “People need to understand that the qualitative mechanisms of sitting are completely different from walking or exercising.” It seems like an obvious difference, but you'd be surprised how completely unfit many office chairs are as stand ins for the modern, ergonomic versions. Even the healthiest individuals may be unknowingly doing significant damage to their bodies by spending 8 or more hours a day at their desks, in chairs that don't appreciate the difference between walking and sitting.
The Herman Miller Aeron Chair is as adaptable as you are, as adaptable and inventive as the modern worker and the modern office. And because its design is rooted in the tenets of ergonomics, the chair was made to be altered. Before you take one to work or home, sit down with Smart Furniture’s custom Aeron Chair toolkit. Getting Started: An Overview of the Aeron Chair
Go to our Aeron Chair Smart Designer Page or choose one of our best-selling configurations.

Step 1: The Perfect Fit
The customization process starts simply enough: pick one of three models based on your weight and height. View the sizing chart to discover what’s the closest fit for your body. Importantly, all chairs--regardless of their height and coverings--are made of 94% recycled materials. Once you’ve identified a good match, hit “Next Step.”
Step 2: Recline and Relax
The process becomes a bit more technical in step 2, where users can choose from two reclining settings. Though it may seem cosmetic, a chair’s ability to rotate and tilt is important for those with leg, circulation, or lower back sensitivities. The Herman Miller Aeron Chair comes with a standard, fixed tilt setting. However, there are lots of reasons to opt for greater control of the tilt on your chair, and what’s more, to control the angle of the chair’s seat. If you’d like to control recline and the ability to adjust the seat angle up to 5 degrees, choose the “Tilt Limiter and Seat Angle” option.

Step 3: At Your Side
This is where the process of personalizing your chair becomes much more concrete. In step 3, users choose from four arm options. The Aeron Chair seen in popular culture often has arms—and in fact, many customers are surprised to hear that the chair is available without such a significant design staple. Because Herman Miller aims to make this experience as personal as possible—after all, your workplace is a reflection of you—the chair also comes with no arms at all. Additionally, customers can choose from the standard fixed arms or two additional, flexible positions: arms which are height adjustable, or arms that are both height and width adjustable, called “fully-adjustable.”
But how do you choose? An Aeron without arms is still just as functional, especially when used in conference rooms since the chair takes on a smaller size, or for those perched over drafting tables 8 hours a day. If you’re populating your office with a fleet of Aeron Chairs, we suggest choosing a fleet of chairs with fixed arms. And for those who know exactly what they need from the chair they use all day, we suggest considering height- or fully-adjustable arms.
Step 4: Up In Arms
If you’ve decided not to include arms on your custom Aeron Chair, there’s no need to complete this part. In step 4, choose what kind of material will cover the armpads. You have two choices: non-upholstered, which is a simple, modern take on the Aeron. The armpads in this case are relatively flexible, with some give and a clean finish. For additional comfort out of an already fabulous chair, users can opt for leather armpads, the height of luxury and sophistication, with more give as well.
Step 5: Supporting Health
This a subtle customization option, but for those in need of additional support from a chair, step 5 includes a very important addition. Back support options for the Aeron include an adjustable lumbar support system or PostureFit lumbar support on models with tilt limiter and seat angle adjustment. The PostureFit support provides a custom fit in the lower back area, below the beltline, that helps achieve healthier posture and improved lower back comfort. You can adjust the level of support with a lever, making this a custom chair that anyone can be comfortable in.
Step 6: Strong Foundations
The Aeron's base and frame finishes blend both classic and contemporary influences for a unique appearance that fits in wherever it's used. In step 6, decide what type of finish you prefer. A variety of base and frame finishes complements the pellicle material. The most common finish option is the graphite base, and your choice of base and frame finish will affect which pellicle fabrics that are available. Smart Furniture’s customization toolkit lets you move forward and back, however, so you can still change your mind if you discover the ideal materials are only available with certain base and frame finishes.
Step 7: The Face of Aeron
This is one of the last steps in customizing your Herman Miller Aeron Chair. In step 7, you get to pick the color of the pellicle material covering your chair. There are lots of factors that go into this decision, but the important thing to remember is that all upholsteries cover the same great Aeron Chair: no structural changes involved. Users can choose from Classic Carbon, Classic Lead, Classic Platinum, Classic Nickel, Tuxedo Blue Black, Tuxedo Grey Black, Waves Carbon, or Waves Platinum. What would you like your chair to say? Interested in following the careful, strong tradition of Aerons past with a classic color choice? Or do you want to forge your own path during this purchase? Now’s the time to set yourself apart or confirm what we all know: this chair is perfect when it’s yours.
Step 8: Location, Location, Location
The final step in customizing your Aeron is practical and straight-forward. What type of floor will you be gracing in your new Aeron? There’s an option for carpet casters and one for hard floor casters. For those who work in office with multiple floor styles, we suggest hard floor casters to avoid floor damage.
Before you order your custom Aeron Chair, take a few minutes to review your purchase. Does everything check out? What does this chair say about you? Does it meet the needs of your body, and of your work environment? Nothing is final yet, so there’s still time to change part of your order on the Aeron chair. Want an upgrade or a change in color? No problem.
Smart Furniture’s representatives are happy to answer specific questions in each step of the customization process, and the Herman Miller Company provides great background on the uses of each style of the classic Aeron. No matter how you choose to customize your chair, you can be confident that, as an Aeron, it will more than fit your needs.
