George Nelson' Furniture is Available at Smart Furniture
Herman Miller set itself apart from the rest of the furniture industry in the mid-20th century by cultivating relationships with people like George Nelson. Among Nelson's accomplishments are the first modular storage system, the idea for the pedestrian mall, and the Swag Leg chair and table group. A close friend of Herman Miller founder DJ DePree, Nelson once said of his firm "is not playing follow-the-leader." It was this openness towards creativity and innovation that led to such a successful relationship between the savvy designer and the unique manufacturer.
The Swag Leg Group
One of George Nelson's most cherished designs is a collection of chairs, tables, and desks known as the Swag Leg Group, whose curved metal legs have a sculptured appearance. To make these pieces, Nelson used a process called "swaging" - a technique involving pressure to cause the tapering of metal tubes. The Swag Leg Chairs feature a molded plastic seat, while the Swag Leg Tables and desk feature a white laminate or walnut surface with walnut stretchers.
The Coconut Chair
"It was developed to give lounge seating comfort together with great freedom of movement." - George Nelson
Truly original. Leave it to Nelson to design a chair shaped like the shard of a coconut. The Coconut Chair has a one-piece foam rubber cushion that can be sat in dozens (hundreds?) of different ways. This inviting cushion rests on a molded plastic shell.
The Marshmallow Sofa
They don't come much more whimsical than this, and something this striking was never this comfortable. The Marshmallow Chair has 18 removable cushions that come together to create a totally unique appearance.
Available in 3 different sizes, the Nelson Bench is perfect for just about anywhere in your home. It fits right in in foyers, living rooms, and home offices.
