Product Overview:

The 3-Minute Custom Herman Miller Mirra Chair
designed by Studio 7.5

The Mirra Chair is a study in elegance, adaptation, and comfort. Designed by Herman Miller in conjuction with German design team Studio 7.5 in 2003, Mirra was concieved as a paradox: a chair that was more supportive but used less material, that was high-value but low cost, that had fewer manual adjustments but a better, more intuitive fit for the user. On all fronts, Mirra is a smashing success.

Mirra is first and foremost a beautiful chair. Fine-tuned, built and designed by the team at Herman Miller, it embodies the practical but fashion-forward aesthetic that company is known for. The seat creates a comfort pocket at the rear and falls off at the front in a "waterfall" contour. The arms arc up from the base of the chair, and the armrests at the top are contoured to fit and support the forearm. The back of the chair is contoured as well, and like the seat has been designed to allow the maximum amount of air possible to pass through the Mirra. That makes you cooler, more comfortable, better able to focus. It's not for nothing the Mirra chair won the GOODDESIGN award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Design and Architecture!

Constructed of elastic, pliable materials, the Mirra chair is also the most adaptable chair out there. It fits any size like a glove, intuitively molding itself to support and comfort your contours, weight distribution, and height. Mirra comes equipped with the patented PostureFit back support system made famous by the Aeron chair, as well as AirWeave seating and the TriFlex back support system. Mirra should easily fit any user without having to be manually adjusted, but of course, Herman Miller has made sure his chair is as adaptable as possible. Users can adjust the seat height, seat depth, tilt tension, tilt limiter, forward tilt, arm height, arm width, arm angle, and lumbar support. There aren't any chairs out there that will fit you better than the Mirra.

Elegant, adaptive, comfortable. The alchemists at Herman Miller and Studio 7.5 has mixed those striking features and more to make one of the best chairs yet produced. Mirra represents the axis of good design and good science, ergonomics and aesthetics coming together in one fine chair. Buy Mirra today.

Design

The Mirra chair by Herman Miller, designed by Studio 7.5, is elegant, simple, and endlessly adaptive. Winner of several awards for design excellence, including the 2003 GOODDESIGN Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Design and Architecture, the Best of NeoCon Gold Award, Silver at the Industrial Design Society of America's Industrial Design Excellence Awards, and the FIRA Ergonomic Excellence Award, it blew away the ergonomic and aesthetic community upon release.

The chief design characteristic for the Mirra chair was paradox, and the interplay between comfort, aesthetics, and ergonomic research. The paradoxes start with the backing of the chair, which is both incredibly supportive and flexible, as well as being literally full of holes. 657 holes to be exact, all of which add to the fashion-forward aesthetic of the Mirra chair while also creating three "flex zones," areas of the backing that flex to fit and accomodate your back as it tilts, twists, sits or bends. The seat of the chair echoes the same design philosophy: the material there is breathable and light, allowing air flow and keeping you cool and comfortable. Another seeming paradox is the fit versus the adjustments. While Mirra can be manually adjusted to fit any unique user, the design enables the chair to automatically conform for the needs of the user. Weight shifting and balance, tilt and flexing of the seat back are all intuitive on Mirra's part; they immediately absorb, support and reflect the shape and particular needs of the user.

But the design of the Mirra chair was not limited to aesthetics or material. Mirra also comes equipped with several ergonomic breakthroughs and innovations, technical achievments that define the chair in equal measure.

  • TriFlex Backrest - This is a new innovation designed to support the back in a multitude of ways; lumbar, lower spine, shoulders. Working in conjunction with the flexible, breathable material forming the back of the chair, the TriFlex keeps you as comfortable, and your back and spine as healthy, as possible. And, true to form, all of this happens intuitively with the Mirra chair - no adjustments necessary
  • Passive PostureFit - Herman Miller designed the PostureFit system for the Aeron chair, their breakthrough product in ergonomic design. But for the Mirra chair they did Aeron one better, developing the Passive PostureFit. The new version is designed to support your lower spine, the part of your back below the belt, and to do it without forcing you into an uncomfortable or unsustainable position. Research has shown that most office workers sit forward in their seat when the work, slouching. Mirra's Passive PostureFit doesn't correct this posture as much as it makes it easy and healthy to maintain. Camber contour at the base of the back makes it comfortable and natural to assume your normal position at work, and at the same time relieves all the stress and unhealthy alignments and tensions from your back.
  • Harmonic tilt - Harmonic tilt uses advanced seat and spring technology to create the most comfortable and easy tilting and reclining possible. Mirra is designed to provide the same tension and pull when it comes to leaning in the seat no matter what type or size of user is in the seat. The ensures that the user is always in complete control of the seat. In a word, it creates harmony between the user, their desire to recline or lean, and the chair.
  • AirWeave Suspension - The seat on the Mirra chair is designed with comfort, breathablity and coolness in mind. AirWeave allows air to flow through the Mirra chair, reaching the user and keeping them cool, collected, productive. The seat also has a fixed depth, at 17", which means there's never a gap between the seat and the back of the chair, keeping you comfortable and supported.
With all that design expertise on display, all the beauty and funtionality you've grown to expect from Herman Miller, you might think Mirra was done innovating. Not so Mirra is one of finest green chairs available on the market, a fully recyclable and super-low emission, low-impact product. The designers at Herman Miller and Studio 7.5 wanted it that way, and the result has exceeded all expectations. Get great design. Buy Mirra today.

Studio 7.5 is a German company dedicated to freedom of movement and design. So committed, in fact, that they have no bosses, no owners, no employees. They're a collective of innovative designers who's original business plan was to buy a 7.5 ton truck and move their studio from place to place: thus the name.

Burkhard Schmitz, Claudia Plikat, and Carola Zwick were the original members of the team, later joined by Roland Zwick. About the Mirra chair: "We define not only how the chair looks but how it performs," says Carola. "We're very involved with its physical behavior, because beauty is not only what you see, it's also what you feel." This is the philosophy that led to the paradox designs of less material and more support, less adjustments and a better fit, and high value at low cost. It also led to one of the most innovative chairs this decade, and in more ways than one. Studio 7.5 blended scientific research, ergonomic study and fashion-forward aesthetics to forge a signature chair: the Mirra. Get designer. Buy Mirra today.
