Steelcase Amia Chair
designed by Thomas Overthun of IDEO

At a Glance:
The Amia Chair isn't necessarily glamorous, but it's incredibly effective. It has all the comfort you'd expect from a $1200 chair like the Embody, but you can buy it at half the cost. No bells and whistles, just real comfort, real support, and real simple design.

What's to Like:
The Amia Chair is a triumph of the free market. It strips away all the things you don't really need from the most high-end office chairs, but it keeps all their comfort, freedom of movement, support, and color. It's lean, and it has kept only the essentials. And because of that, it's half the price. Like it for the simple design, like it for the back supporting LiveLumbar system, like it for the comfort of the seat and back; love it for the price.

What's Not to Like:
We say simple design, but others might say unsophisticated design. The Amia Chair doesn't do anything new or exciting with the office chair form. But trust us, it's got a great personality.

The Bottom Line:
The Amia Chair is genteel in the cubicle and a freak (world beater?) in the comfort and ergonomics department.

Features:
  • Passive Seat Angle: automatically adjusts for reclining
  • Adjustable Seat Height: pneumatic control provides a full range of height
  • Lumbar Support: allows fine-tuning for lumbar support
  • 2-Stage Tilt Limiter: slightly reclined or fully reclined tilt settings with adjustable tension
  • Adjustable Seat Depth: slides forward and backward to accommodate people of different heights
  • Adjustable Arm Depth: makes it easier to get closer to your desk
  • Arm Pivot: puts armrests at just the angle you need them

The Steelcase Amia Chair is also known by the following manufacturer numbers: 4821410, 4821410S, 4827410, 4827410S.

Design

The design of the Steelcase Amia chair was motivated by several goals: Simplicity, comfort, support, adaptability, durability, and value. Amia can proudly claim to have accomplished all of them. The Amia Chair is meant to be an everyday relief from the stress and unhealthy postures of eight hour days at the office; days that can take an often unseen toll on your back, shoulders, spine, neck and thighs. The LiveLumbar technology within the chair, one of the most important ergonomic innovations Steelcase has pioneered, takes the responsibility of keeping your lower back supported as seriously as the rest of the chair works to keep you comfortable. Beyond simple comfort and support, this is also an extremely adjustable and adaptable chair. It can be adjusted to fit any user, and the four-way adjusting armrest is the cool and quirky cherry on top of a truly fine office chair.

    Amia Ergonomic Chair
  • Simplicity - "There is a difference between simple and simplistic."
The designers at Steelcase had a clear idea of what type of chair the Amia would be. They wanted strong, clear lines, hidden working parts instead of the more common and showy extroverted bells and whistles favored by other furniture makers, and a look inspired by none other than the VW Bug. The Amia chair accomplished this by keeping all of its ergonomic design hidden from view, either within the seat back - where the LiveLumbar system resides - or in the seat itself, where cooling technology is deployed to keep users from getting overheated. Because of the focus on simplicity within the technological design, the aesthetic design was freed up, and was able to form a unified whole rather than just a few striking parts. Amia has a back slightly narrower than usual, which frees up the shoulders and arms, as well as a rounded, slightly contoured seat. The back and seat dovetail at a wide angle, creating plenty of room to shift and get comfortable, while also continuing to support the back. Available in several colors, the Amia is as personal as the car it was designed to recall.

  • Comfort
The number one priority for people who use office chairs is comfort. That's understandable; nowadays the average American worker is sitting at a desk or in front of a computer for up to ten hours a day, both at work and at home. And who wants to be uncomfortable ten hours a day? Fortunately the Amia chair is designed to relieve stress and pressure, provide excellent comfort in the seat, and support the arms. And it's not just your physical self that will work better in more comfortable positions; studies have shown that increased comfort and support at work can lead to increased brain function in the form of alertness, focus, and even productivity. Sitting in an Amia Chair is the right decision if you want to be comfortable, and being comfortable is the right decision if you want to significantly improve your day-to-day experience at work.

  • Support
The Steelcase Amia chair is known first and foremost for its LiveLumbar technology, resident in the backing of the chair. A series of flexors and pads ranging across the width of the seat back, LiveLumbar does an unparalleled job of supporting and easing your lumbar region. How does it work? Well, the flexors not only support, they move and adapt to your body. That means when you recline, lean, tilt, or sit awkwardly, Amia adapts to that and keeps your back healthy. But while they flex for movement, they also hold firm for prolonged sitting. Conforming to the curve of your lower spine and correcting for awkward posture, the Amia LiveLumbar system can't be beat as far as the benefit to your back goes. And it isn't the only feature that lends support. The seat pan of the chair is strong enough to hold your weight comfortably, but also soft and rounded enough to take pressure off your legs and posterior, improving circulation and lessening or removing undue stress on your legs. The armrests are so adjustable, going four ways, that it's easy to always have the appropriately supportive arm support you need when working, no matter what position you're in.

  • Adaptability
The Amia chair is highly adjustable. Even the LiveLumbar system can be moved up and down the back of the chair according to taste! Other movable parts include:

    • Adjustable Seat Depth -- People don't fit neatly into average body sizes. Leg and torso lengths can vary independent of a person's overall height. Amia's adjustable seat depth accommodates different body shapes for long-term comfort. It also works to actually keep your legs comfortable while you're sitting. It takes pressure off your thighs, which increases circulation, and it has advanced cooling technology to make sure you don't sweat or get overheated in the chair.

    • Back Tension -- Adjust the amount of resistance - or "push back" - to your preference to help maintain your back's natural curve. Amia conforms to your specifications.

    • Height, Depth, Width, and Pivot Arms -- Arms telescope in and out, move forward and back, pivot and adjust up and down so you can find a natural position that comfortably supports the wrists, forearms, shoulders and neck.

  • Durability
The Steelcase Amia chair can handle up to 300 lbs, and is backed by the Steelcase 10 year warranty. Assuming you keep the Amia for 10 years (and it may be much longer after you sit in this comfortable, ergonomic, adjustable chair), that's a cost of just 14 cents a day for the base model. Can you afford not to buy Amia?

In the end, the Amia Chair has a very strong case as the best ergonomic office chair on the market. It's very comfortable (again, the number one concern of office workers), it supports all types of bodies in all types of healthful ways, it can be adjusted to exacting specifications and therefore personalized, it's durable and has a great warranty, and it's just plain stylish and well-designed. What more can you ask of an office chair than that it give you everything you need, and nothing you don't? Smart Furniture is proud to offer the Steelcase Amia Chair to our customers.

Amia was created in the Steelcase Design Studio in collaboration with Thomas Overthun of IDEO.

Reviews

Smart Furniture Employee Review
The Amia Chair is insta-ergonomic technology that has my back. I can honestly say that I have never been happier about a chair switch in my Smart Furniture career -- now, I have only had three switches so far, but I'm trying to magnify the fact that this is by far my favorite. I did a little pre-switch research and discovered that the design for the Amia has roots in the old version of the Volkswagen Bug and a nearly-empty glass of cognac. Don't drink and drive is what comes to mind next after hearing that, but fortunately I'm at no risk there.

I find those ideas very off-the-wall for a chair, but at the same time, I am happy to sit on an idea like that. It reminds me to think outside the boundary or the expected norm.  Read more...

I tried a Steelcase Leap chair in a local store, but it was over my budget, so I decided to order the Amia as a more affordable alternative.

Unfortunately, I don't like it. The seat cushion is hard, the fabric is rough, and I find that the seat back is uncomfortable. Also, the plastic armrests don't feel good against my skin.

One chair arrived broken. Called and they took care of everything right away. Shipping return labels etc. That is the key to buying a product. Not the purchase but the customer service in case of a problem. That's what counts. They did a great job.

I love this chair. It's very adjustable. It's still comfortable after a few years of owning it and the color has stayed bright. I bought this after owning a $200 chair from an office store and it immediately improved my comfort. Love Steelcase. They always have fantastic quality.

Comments about Steelcase Amia Chair:

Being that I sit in my office chair 5 days a week for close to 7 hours a day. Its important to have a chair that is supporting and comfortable. This chair offers both that. I love the lower lumbar support. Its unlike any other chair on the market. I struggle with back pain issues, and this really has helped relieve some of those day to day pains. As far as things I don't like, nothing comes to mind! Which is a big plus :) The only thing that could make this chair any better would be a built in massage!

Comments about Steelcase Amia Chair:

I was in the market for buying a decent home office chair. I had mine for nearly a decade and it started falling apart and killing my back. I really liked the Steelcase chairs and back at work I fancied the reply chair. But after reading the review on Smart Furniture I decided to go with the Amia. Turns out I had the same type of chair at work as well (different office).

So far the chair has seen a few months of use and it's been performing well. I ordered mine in orange and without the handles. I have a home office setup and usually spend quite a few hours in a chair so it was critical to get the one chair that's right for m workflow. Amia is comfortable and easy to adjust - especially the resistance on the lean / recline.

My back has seen an improvement as well. And while no chair is going to be perfect - I'm having fewer back problems due to Amia's solid construction and features.

All in all the chair is sturdy and comfortable. The only nit I have is the occasional creak I get when I lean back but that's not a deal breaker at all and happens very infrequently.

Oh and I should add Smart Furniture were courteous enough to extend the Steel Case discount which took place soon after I ordered the chair - very generous of them and a very pleasant surprise!

      Comments about Steelcase Amia Chair:

I'm a designer/illustrator, and my desk is a traditional drafting table that's much higher than a standard desk. I'd been suffering with cheap $100 drafting chairs for years but decided my back & backside were worth a nice seat. Options are limited in stool-height chairs, and the Amia is in the midrange price wise.

      GREAT THINGS:

      • Strong foot ring—I can stand on it, supporting all my weight.

      • Seat depth adjustment—more important to comfort than expected.

      • Back Tension adjustment—I tend to lean forward most of the time, so I have it set to a soft setting so that when I do lean back, it's soft and easy.

      NOT SO GREAT THINGS

      • The seat cushion could be a bit softer, but I'm sure the firmness helps support me for 10+ hours a day.

      • Because the arms are so adjustable, there's lots of moving parts so as you lean, the arms creak and squeak a bit.

      • This is my fault, but I should have bought the hard floor casters. The chair rolls great on my flat office carpet, but it's way too fast for hard flooring.

      Service and delivery comments:

Delivery was fast, but more importantly it was delivered directly into my office. All I had to do was take it out of the box.

          Comments about Steelcase Amia Chair:

Between gaming and general use, I use my desktop computer at home upwards of 12-14 hours per day, so I was looking to make a solid investment in an office chair that offered a variety of ergonomic adjustments. I was initially going to go with the Herman Miller SAYL chair, but settled on the Amia, as it seemed to offer more features for the price.

I've had the chair for a few weeks now, and overall I'm very pleased. It's an attractive chair without being overly ostentatious (I ordered mine with the Cogent Connect fabric in Blue Jay).

In the comfort department, the chair definitely delivers. Perhaps the best compliment I can give it is that it makes sitting with proper posture a comfortable experience. Even sitting completely upright feels great. The lumbar support conforms nicely to my back, even when reclining, and the large adjustable armrests allow your forearms, wrists and hands to remain flat while using your mouse/keyboard. The seat pan is pretty cushy, though it's not as supportive as I thought it'd be. You kind of sink into it, and I find that I need to stand up or move around more often than I'd like.

The fit and finish of the chair is good for the most part. My chair arrived with a faint scratch/marking across the back panel of the chair, and one of the armrests has a decidedly more worn texture than the other. The chair can squeak at times as well. While these aren't dealbreakers, I expect a brand-new chair at this price to have better quality control.

Final conclusion -- it's an excellent chair for the price, despite the shortcomings I mentioned.

          Service and delivery comments:

          Service/Delivery

The chair took a little over two weeks to arrive from the time I ordered it. Not terrible by any means, but not what I would call fast.

It arrived in pretty good condition considering it came fully assembled in the box -- but there was a faint scratch across the back panel, and one of the armrests seems more worn than the other.

I also didn't receive any notifications about the status of my order/shipment from Smart Furniture other than an initial order confirmation -- I had to manually check. Not a huge deal, but disappointing nonetheless.

I love the Amia chair! I have been through tons of the cheaper versions and none have ever given me the back support this one does. I often sit 10-12 hours a day and this chair seems to flex with you as you move in the chair. I am tall and long legged and this really adjusts to fit your body. I love how the seat can be adjusted to actually support your back. It seems to make me sit correctly (I am a sloucher). It probably would not be good for a large man - but I am an "athletically built" woman and it fits me very comfortably.

                      Comments about Steelcase Amia Chair:

I needed a new desk chair for my home office where I spend many hours on the computer. Due to a serious lower back problem I need a chair that will provide excellent lumbar support when working on the computer. The Amia chair was highly recommended by the SmartFurniture rep (who was excellent). It is a fantastic chair especially for the price. I was able to customize it by selecting specific base and fabric materials and colors. It arrived within a week in perfect condition, fully assembled. It was a beautiful chair. I found it very good for just working at my desk reading or writing. The lumbar support for this use was quite acceptable. (Note: You can adjust the lumbar support up and down, but there is no adjustment to increase or decrease the amount of support).

However, when working at the computer I, like most people, tend to lean forward. Unfortunately this chair does not have the ability to "tilt forward". When leaning even slightly forward, I was unable to get the degree of lumbar support I needed. I also found the seat bottom to be a tad on the hard side, though I suspect I would have adjusted to this in time.

I decided to return the Amia chair solely because I could not obtain the needed back support when working on my computer. I ended up paying the extra money for the HM Aeron chair. The Aeron has a lot more lumbar support adjustability, and the chair also has a tilt forward feature. This pretty much insures adequate lumbar support in all positions, especially when working on the computer.

I hated to give up the Amia chair, and for most folks, I'm sure it would be an excellent choice. However, due to my spine/lower back problem the Amia just didn't work for me.

SmartFurniture was superb in taking care of the return on the Amia (they paid all the shipping) and made it as easy as possible. Luckily I saved all of the original box and packing materials so it was easy to repackage for the return. Fed Ex came to my house to pick it up. Absolutely no problems at all. SmartFurniture shipped out the Aeron immediately. (NOTE: make sure you keep the original box and packing material until you are absolutely certain you will not be returning your chair).

My experience with SmartFurniture was by far one of the best online buying experiences I've had. Absolutely stellar customer service. I have already recommended them to several business associates.

Includes many options for adjustment which are $$ upgrades on HM chairs. Arms take a little getting used to but are ultimately nice once you figure them out. Well-priced compared to comparable chairs, however most all chairs in this space are overpriced in my opinion. Very heavy chair, almost unable to lift but it's very sturdy and are hoping will last a long time. I removed one star due to general cost.

This is a very attractive, comfortable chair. It is very hard to find white/cream office furniture (I got the coconut, which is really a nice ivory color and perfect in my room, which is a home office). I normally spend a lot of time sitting and so far, so good, but since it was the holidays when I received it and I am only now getting my nose back on the grindstone, I haven't really had time to sit in it as much as normal! That is the only reason I can't give it 5 stars...

                                Service and delivery comments:

I am VERY pleased with the service I received; a real, live rep emailed me right away with answers to my questions and prompted me to ask more. In the end, she helped me choose a chair that was actually a bit less expensive than the one I had initially asked her about. Chair itself came in one piece, ready to go, carefully packaged, no damage. Easy-peasy! Also, the chair went on sale the day I ordered it and I didn't notice but Smart Furniture automatically credited my Pay Pal account for the difference - nice! Oh, and color swatches came VERY fast (like overnight-ish). I have no doubt that any issues/returns would be handled very well too, although I don't think I'll need to test that theory!

There was a strange situation though of having to return the first 2 chairs. They creaked. [...] They finally got it right on the 3rd try.[...]

                                      Comments about Steelcase Amia Chair:

The chair comes assembled, so there is nothing to put together, which is great. The things that you can adjust are pretty basic, but that makes it easy to figure out. The adjustments for the most part work great to get the chair set up for happy working for several hours. I used to have to go to the chiropractor at least once a week - now I haven't been in months. It's amazing what a good chair can do to help you make it through your work day. I sit for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. This chair has more than paid for itself - less trips to the chiropractor, and a happier individual in general. I would definitely suggest making the switch to a good chair. If not this one, then definitely another ergonomic chair. Spend the money - you won't be sorry.

                                            First Impressions
The Amia Chair from Steelcase is a winning little task chair, doing the work of the big boys (Embody, Aeron) with little of the fanfare and coming in at a greatly reduced cost. The design of the Amia Chair is quite different from the design for the Mirra, but in terms of value, comfort and effectiveness, they're very close. The Amia Chair comes with several ergonomic features and innovations. Included among them are highly adjustable sliding armrests that go up, down, right, left, side to side, and back and forth. Another feature is the Live Lumbar support in the back of the chair, a system that constantly adjusts itself to fit the comfort and support needs of your lower back. While using the chair, I could definitely feel the chair "working," as I never felt back pain or stress. The only time I ever felt uncomfortable in the chair was when I slouched way down, my shoulder blades only a few inches above the armrests, and it would be an outstanding chair indeed that could withstand that kind of slouching and keep you totally comfortable for long periods of time. The look of the Amia Chair is very fresh, very simple; I thought that a good analogue was fruit. The colors are bright and sunny, and the slope of the chair attractive.

                                            The X Factor
This is a high value chair, giving you all the comfort, support, and ergonomic attention you need, for half the price of other task chairs.

                                            The Bottom Line
We highly recommend this office chair. Great style, great design, great price; that's the Amia Chair by Steelcase.

Does the Amia chair have a mesh option, or is it only the Buzz2 or Cogent Connect? And of those 2 materials which is the more breathable and suited to hot conditions?

Actually, Amia can have 3D Knit on the back with an upholstered seat (Cogent Connect or Buzz2) for an additional cost. But between the two offered online the Cogent will be more breathable as it has holes in the fabric.

Yes. The casters will have a polyurethane tread that will grip hard floors, dampen noise when rolling on them and prevent scratches.
