Barcelona Couch designed by Mies van der Rohe from Knoll
At A Glance: The Barcelona Couch by Mies van der Rohe was introduced to the public at the 1929 Barcelona Exposition. Immediately, it created a sensation. The structural purity and elegance of the Barcelona Collection (couch, chair and ottoman, table) indicates that they are more than just modern furniture design; they represent the tenets of Modern architecture. Simply representative of the best of Bauhaus design, the Barcelona Couch is composed of a large mahogany frame, well upholstered with leather and padding and placed atop tubular steel legs.
What's To Like:
Designed by Mies van der Rohe. Is that plain enough?
Simplicity of form and material uses nothing extra - and leaves nothing wanting.
A perfectly harmonious complement to the modern interior.
The straps that fasten the couch to the base are available in black leather or matching leather. We have found black to be the most popular leather color for the Barcelona Couch.
What's Not to Like:
The Barcelona Couch is a modern classic - and its price shows it.
If you'd like a more traditionally shaped chaise, this one isn't your best bet.
If you have small children, it would probably be a good idea to wait until they're older. Either that, or just give in to the abuse the couch's leather seat will suffer at the hands of the little ones.
The Bottom Line: Art Deco, as refined in the Bauhaus, is embodied in the classic Barcelona Couch. There's no better example of the seamless reconciliation of the Arts and machine production.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Without question, one of the most significant designers of the modern era. Born in Germany in 1886, van der Rohe began a career in architecture and interior in an era that challenged traditional concepts of aesthetics and design. Rejected classical, cluttered notions of beauty, he was a proponent of clean, efficient lines expressed using industrial materials. This design movement gained ground after World War I, but Mies van der Rohe was forced to move to the United States in 1937 due to political pressure from the Nazis, who rejected his new ideas on art and architecture.
He took a position as head of architecture in Chicago at the Armour Institute of Technology, now known as the Illinois Institute of Technology. His career in the United States spanned 30 years and saw him create numerous standout buildings in the Chicago area. He is perhaps best remembered today for his inspiring furniture designs.
