Product Overview:

Bertoia Bird Chair and Ottoman by Knoll
designed by Harry Bertoia

The Bertoia Bird Chair remains is a textbook in bent metal design and has an exalted place in furniture design history. You can only get the Bertoia Bird Chair from Knoll, and you can get the Bird Chair for the best price from Smart Furniture. Harry Bertoia invented some of the most celebrated chairs ever made by inventing a new material: steel mesh. Bertoia started as a teacher, a metal craft instructor at Cranbrook, while also working with the legendary Charles Eames to develop his molded plywood chairs. Bertoia quickly became popular and reknowned in his own right, in no small part because of the Bertoia Bird Chair, a beautiful, comfortable, stunning piece of furniture. The Bird Chair is unrivaled for quality, inventiveness, and stylistic accomplishment.

The Bertoia Ottoman is the companion to the Bertoia Bird Chair. The Bertoia Ottoman is itself a work of art, crafted as well and as creatively as the chair. Don't keep these two apart.

The iconic design of the Bertoia Bird Chair fits into any home or environment.

Bird Chair and Ottoman are available separately.

Customer's own material may be used upon approval.

Many additional fabric lines are available upon request. Please call a Smart Furniture salesperson at 888-467-6278 to get started!

Harry BertoiaHarry Bertoia
An Italian designer best known (and justly famous) for his Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair, and the whole series of chairs and tables that followed from that design. A proponent of leaving space and air in his designs, Bertoia was a pioneer in using bent steel as a design tool and material, which led to the creation of durable, reproducable, and delicate looking chairs and tables.

Bertoia is without a doubt in the pantheon of great designers, and must be included amongst the greatest of the mid-century movement, including Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen. In fact, Harry worked on the production of the Eames Molded Plywood Division of the Evans Product Company, and even made wedding rings for Charles and Ray Eames. In the 1950's, Harry Bertoia designed his wire chair collection, which remains one of the most recognizable forms in the designer furniture world.
