Bertoia Side Chair designed by Harry Bertoia from Knoll
At A Glance: A brilliant aesthetic achievement and a staple of mid-century modern design, the Bertoia Side Chair's transparency and lightness belies its incredible strength and durability. Constructed from steel rods, this chair is the definition of the words "mid-century icon." Few other pieces can claim the immediate success and enduring popularity as this chair and the rest of the Bertoia collection of seating.
Creator Harry Bertoia came up with the design for the chair while doing studies in bent metal and negative space: "If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them." The resulting chair, with its beauty and comfort, caused an instant sensation.

Harry Bertoia An Italian designer best known (and justly famous) for his Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair, and the whole series of chairs and tables that followed from that design. A proponent of leaving space and air in his designs, Bertoia was a pioneer in using bent steel as a design tool and material, which led to the creation of durable, reproducable, and delicate looking chairs and tables.
Bertoia is without a doubt in the pantheon of great designers, and must be included amongst the greatest of the mid-century movement, including Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen. In fact, Harry worked on the production of the Eames Molded Plywood Division of the Evans Product Company, and even made wedding rings for Charles and Ray Eames. In the 1950's, Harry Bertoia designed his wire chair collection, which remains one of the most recognizable forms in the designer furniture world.
