One Night Stand
by Blu Dot

At A Glance:
This is the sleeper sofa that James Bond would use, if anyone ever had the audacity to make him sleep on the sofa. We all know that would never happen, but if it did, he'd spend the night on a One Night Stand. It has the clever design of a gadget and the comfort and good looks of a high quality sofa. Win-win.

What's To Like:
It's easy to transform this super comfy sofa into a super comfy bed. Just remove the back cushions and flip over the large cushion you sit on - suddenly the arms of the sofa become support structures, and you've got a flat, cushy surface as big as a queen bed to sleep on. Use the cushions for pillows!

What's Not to Like:
The look of the bed isn't as graceful as the look of the couch. However, you can be sure your guests will be comfortable when it's folded out.

The Bottom Line:
The One Night Stand is a nifty little sleeper that packs a big design and comfort punch.

One Night Stand

It's a sleeper sofa that doesn't look like one - a wolf in sheep's clothing. Just remove the back cushions and flip the seat forward to instantly transform it into a queen-size mattress. Despite its dual-identity, this Blu Dot sleeper sofa manages to keep its cool no matter who is sitting or sleeping on it.

ABOUT THE MANUFACTURER

Blu Dot FurnitureBlu Dot was founded in 1997 by John Christakos, Charles Lazor, and Maurice Blanks, three college friends who wanted to bring modern design and quality furnishing to everyone. Based in Minneapolis, Blu Dot does just that today- designing tables, chairs, sofas, and a variety of home accessories. Blu Dot furniture has a distinct feel and appearance- its products achieve a definite flair despite a minimalist appearance.

DESIGN

It's a sofa by day, sleeper by night. The Blu Dot One Night Stand is a sofa that will certainly surprise you. Due to the sleek contemporary design, you might not guess that this sofa easily transforms into a queen-sized bed with one fluid motion. Blu Dot provides the unexpected with this piece, a sleeper sofa that doesn't look like one. The Blu Dot One Night Stand was designed to fit beautifully in a contemporary space with its clean lines, firm cushions, and brushed stainless steel legs.

The beauty of this piece lies in its camouflaged versatility. No one would guess this stylish sofa doubles as a comfortable queen-sized sleeper. To transform the sofa into the sleeper bed, simply remove the two back cushions. Next, flip the seat of the sofa forward and you will begin to see the smooth transition take place. Have you ever struggled with a sleeper sofa that requires yanking bars and forcefully pushing or pulling pieces out of your sofa?

Well say good-bye to that back breaking work, and rest easy knowing your Blu Dot sleeper sofa can make the transition instantly with minimal effort. Blu Dot designed this piece to not only look good but to also be functional and serve its purpose well. Let this modern Blu Dot sleeper sofa surprise you with its firm seat and mattress and the ease in which it transforms to suit your every need.

The sleeper sofa is available in four distinct colors to fit your contemporary space and your current color scheme. Available in rust, smog, smoke, and stone, this sleeper sofa is a great addition if you are looking for a versatile, contemporary piece that serves as a comfortable sofa or bed. The Blu Dot One Night Stand comes with brushed stainless steel legs, which accompany the four upholstery colors mentioned. Customers who have purchased the One Night Stand sofa have placed this Blu Dot piece in offices, living rooms, dens, and the ever popular man cave. Because the sofa transforms into a queen-sized bed, it is important to pay attention to the dimensions.

When considering this Blu Dot sleepr sofa purchase, make sure the space for your future sleeper sofa is big enough to house both the sofa and the expanded sleeper bed. The sofa is 30 inches high, 80 inches wide and 32 inches deep. Notice that when the sofa folds into the sleeper, the height is lowered to 11 inches, and the sleeper is 62 inches wide and eighty inches long. If you have any questions about the One Night Stand sleeper sofa, please contact us at SmartFurniture.com. Our sales representatives are experienced and can help answer your questions about size, upholstery, shipping, and color options for this Blu Dot piece.

First off, the design of this couch looks and fits great in my apartment (600 sq. feet). The simple flip out design is also a lot easier to use then your typical sleeper sofa. It definitely has a firm feel (which I like) so if your looking for a "cushiony" sofa I'd probably go with another option. I initially had a problem with the One Night Stands fabric. It seemed to pill and stain fairly easily.

Fortunately, Blu Dot customer service followed through with a solution and now the couch is looking sweet. This is a great modern sofa for anyone with a limited amount of space. Highly recommended

If looks where everything, ugh. This is one stylish piece of furniture that screams modern without making you feel like you are in the set of a remake for 2001 space odyssey (now that isn't a bad thing either). But sadly, for us the problems started right away.
After two days of having it, we tried using it as a bed to watch a movie. the half of the mattress that is connected to the top of the couch was comfortable enough (understanding that this is not an actual mattress), but the other half was incredibly uncomfortable. You can feel the planks through the thin cushioning.
What's worse is that the quality of these planks is AWFUL. Halfway through the movie (the first movie we ever watched in this as a bed, after two days of owning it) I turned from my back to my side and two snapped immediately!!!! Now I am not a 98 pound ballerina and do have some extra weight and height on me (6'2" and around 240#) but it's not like I was jumping or standing on this thing, I simply rolled to my side and they snapped. We where extremely disappointed in the fact that we didn't get to use that half of the bed ever again. Furthermore, the fabric developed these fuzzy balls, much like a cheap wool coat does, within a few months of having this couch. It would be understandable if it where because of heavy use, but we really don't use it that much as we both work most of the time, and when at home, we hang out and watch movies in bed most of the time.
We simply resolved to making what's best of it and have had this for over three years now. We never use it as a bed, as it's broken and we don't want to damage it more, and while we can get one of those battery operated frayed/balled up fabric shavers, they come back every four months or so. I really wanted to love this couch, but the quality is really subpar, and for the price tag, that's just not worth it. Hopefully some day we can gut it, re plank it, and re-upholster it, as if these problems didn't exist, this would have been our favorite couch ever.

Good sofa, but not so good as a sleeper

By Shibagirl

Pros

  • Attractive Design
  • Comfortable As A Sofa

Cons

  • Uncomfortable As A Sleepe

Best Uses

Comments about Blu Dot One Night Stand:

I've owned this sofa for two years.

On the plus side, it's been great as a sofa. It's sleek and modern looking. There is enough space underneath the sofa to store a couple of folding chairs. The cushion is firm, which I like, and has held up well over time. I use it several hours a day for reading and watching TV. Sometimes my dog sits on it too. Though some reviewers have complained about the fabric pilling or fraying, the fabric on my sofa is still in good condition.

If it was used solely as a sofa, I would give it five stars, but as a sleeper it is quite awful. The sleeper is uneven and lumpy. It needs to be used with a thick foam mattress cover. But living in NYC, its difficult to find storage space for a bulky mattress cover. Also, the sleeper is close to the floor which is a problem for some guests. Finally, when opened as a sleeper you have to make up the bed sideways, which can be disorienting for some guests.

Bottom line - if you only have occasional guests who are on the younger side, then its a good buy. But if you have frequent guests, especially parents, etc., then you need to consider a different sofa.

    Pros
Looks good, stylish. Or at least, until my cat got to it and totally destroyed it, now it looks like a hot mess. I do NOT recommend this fabric if you have pets, children. It's very easily ripped/clawed/frayed.

    Cons
Very uncomfortable as a sleeper couch, even with a topper. Guests have politely complained about it and basically don't want to use it. Kind of defeats the purpose, no? Also the foam seems kind of shoddy, We've had it for a couple of years and the cushion is losing its shape a bit.

Comments about Blu Dot One Night Stand:

My husband and I agree with all these posts: it is a stylish couch and, best of all, it doesn't look like a sofa bed. I love a firm mattress, so it suits me fine. Still, I can understand why many don't like that aspect. It's a personal preference. For those who think it's too firm, we also use a foam topper and it's fine (we have tall folks who sleep on it for a month-long stay). It is true: there's a bar in the middle but we don't sleep on it. Still, it is there, no doubt. It does pill but we made a cover since we have cats and don't want them on it most of the time. We use the couch as a bed often for family since we live in Hawaii (lots of visitors). The main drawback is that the springs (on the couch side where you sit--not the bed side where you sleep) have sprung one by one. The first happened in the first year some time. It was so depressing that I just blotted it out of my mind because there is no way to fix it. There's no shipping to Hawaii (we shipped it ourselves), and there is no one in furniture-making in Hawaii who has said they could repair springs. Then, two more springs snapped in the next year, and now our couch is lumpy to sit on. Since we have a tiny house, it is our main seating area. At almost $2,000, I can't part with it but I can't recommend its poor construction either, even though we love its style. BluDot has other great designs in normal sofas, one of which my parents bought, but for sleepers, my husband and I have to find another at some point. :(

Comments about Blu Dot One Night Stand:

We bought this sofa for our small summer house. A clean contempory look and compact dimensions were important to us. Ours is the light beige fabric.

We use it occasionally as a sofabed for guests. Others have pointed out that it is "hard" as far as regular mattresses go. We use a thick mattress pad and it seems OK for our family at least. I should note that wrap-around mattress pads fit it somewhat awkwardly but do the job.

What I really like about this piece is that it does not look at all like a sofa bed. We sometimes rent our summer house. This is a perfect solution as none of the tenants have realized there is an extra bed.

"One night stand" is too hard, both as a sofa and as a bed. Those who have had a night's sleep on it have turned down a second invitation and stayed in a hotel. Second negative is difficulty in converting the sofa to a bed.

Dang. I really wanted to love this couch. The look and feel are great. It's definitively on the firm side but comfortable nonetheless. The main problem I have is with the fabric. This couch has been used only moderately and has already developed scuffs and staining in several areas. It's not like anything was spilled on the couch. It just naturally seems prone to show wear. An unfortunate problem with an otherwise nice couch.

Probably the best modern looking sleeper you'll find on the market. Or at least anywhere in the Bay Area... my wife and I looked everywhere! This couch is comfortable to sit on, but when folded out it isn't the best to sleep on. My 50-something mom isn't happy sleeping on it when she visits, even though I've covered it with two mattress pads. Despite this, I'm happy with our decision to purchase the sofa. I hate day beds!

I purchased this sleeper for a client and he loves it. I have since recommended it again to another client and I think she is going to purchase as well. Very comfortable for lounging and also sleeping esp. if you like a firmer feel and a low "platform" style bed. Very thrilled to see the new colors as well. Thanks Blu Dot!

After looking at and rejecting a huge number of sleeper sofas because they were either way out of my price range or designed to be uncomfortable, I settled on the Blu Dot. I'm glad I did. Everyone who has slept on it tells me how comfortable it is as a bed, and it's not half bad as a couch, either. Very comfy to sit and read or stretch out and nap with a cat on my feet.

We purchased this sleeper sofa because the design, size, color and price are wonderful. But, it is not a comfortable guest bed. It has no padding, let alone anything resembling a mattress. For guests, we use a foam topper, a mattress pad, and several comforters. We have decided that for our next guests we will put an air mattress under the mattress pad. With all of that being said, we still love it!

says my mother. And that's high praise. The delivery men were impressed with the design and construction (no they don't work for BluDot). The sofa is firm, a plus for my husband who finds it perfect for stretching out and reading. The dogs love it and I'm certain overnight guests will too (after we shoo the dogs off and slap a feather bed on top). It sits a bit deep and high for me but the lumbar pillows help and I plan to purchase a couple Ottos. We love it. It's lovely in Persimmon. Ingenious.

The One Night Stand model is perfect in every way, except for the quality of the upholstery. I would not recommend this sofa for every day use.

The color and design are perfect, so that's why I kept the product.

I would recommend the product to a friend, though.

Comments about Blu Dot One Night Stand:

This is a very firm sofa with a study feel. The bed is low to the ground (on the ground, actually), so be prepared for that. I have slept on the bed and am delighted with the extra firm feel; my guests have also had no complaints about the firmness of the surface (note that there is no mattress).

In general, I love the sofa, which I use almost every night in my office, except for the material: it is a type of felt that seems to pill in a bad way. I thought it might stop after a couple of months, but I have had it for four months now, and it is just as bad. Blu Dot sent a cloth for gathering the bits and pieces that tend to gather on the sofa material (lint, hair, etc.), but it does not work. Instead, I have tried the vacuum and even tape to take off the layer of pilled material that seems to coat the surface. Eventually it will stop, but it's a little time-consuming to deal with right now.

The rust is a gorgeous color. Despite my complaints about the material, I do love the sofa.

We use this sofa in a man's den. We liked it's clean, modern look, but we also liked its firm feel. That same firmness might not be for everyone, but it's what we prefer and we had trouble finding. We've had the sofa for almost a year and the material is holding up very well.
We haven't had occasion to use the sleeper bed, but it couldn't be easier to fold out. Easy assembly.
