Eames Compact Desk by Herman Miller
designed by Charles and Ray Eames
At A Glance:
This is a smaller version of the popular Eames Desk. This compact model has a smaller footprint perfect for the home office. In addition to the smaller size, this version does not have the file drawer that the larger version has. Instead, the low shelf is closed on the front and back and open on the side, so you can seat yourself on either side. Features level glides with a powder-coated black or zinc-coated frame.
What's To Like:
Imagine a desk that's functional and attractive, with modern stylization and sensible features. Imagine a desk with vibrant, eye-catching color that blends well with most any environment. Now give it a small size and configure it so that it doesn't matter which side you put the storage shelves on. This desk is perfect for apartments everywhere, and will fit into any space no matter how small.
What's Not to Like:
If you need extra storage space (or file storage) and you don't want to buy an Eames Storage Unit or some other office storage to go with it - or if you don't have room for another piece of furniture, this desk isn't a good choice. But if you don't need extra storage space, you've found what you're looking for with the Eames Compact Desk.
The Bottom Line:
Desks and storage units have always presented a design challenge. For serious designers, who expect to make beautiful things as well as useful things, creating something as traditional and explicitly utilitarian as a desk or storage unit can seem like a chore. But Herman Miller's Eames Compact Desk is at once playful, sturdy, functional, and beautiful - an heirloom piece from one of the most consistent manufacturers out there.

Charles and Ray Eames are perhaps the most celebrated designers of the 20th century. Married in 1941, the Eames duo are responsible for some of the most critically acclaimed furniture designs of the modern era. Amongst their most famous designs are the molded plywood chair, the aluminum chair group, and the Eames Storage Units. Although they are most often remembered today for their furniture designs with partner Herman Miller, the Eameses engaged in artistic expression across a broad range of mediums- including architecture and filmmaking.
Charles and Ray Eames were a husband and wife design partnership. Their work spanned a great a turbulent period in American history, from the 40s to the 80s. The furniture they created, the films they shot, and the designs they made popular are just as exciting and meaningful today as they were the moment they were first introduced to the public. Their work is classic but functional, modern but timeless, playful but seriously developed, and generally legendary. If you were to choose the best two designers of the latter half of the 20th century, you would almost certainly choose this amazing duo. What luck that they decided to work together!
Charles and Ray met at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, a prestigious design institution in Michigan. Their courtship and marriage neatly coincided with their collaboration as artists and designers on groundbreaking products, using groundbreaking and novel techniques and methods. Among their finest creations you would have to rank the Eames Lounge Chair, the Plywood Lounge Chair (or the LCW), the Eames Desk, the Eames Storage Unit, their own personal home, and the fabulous Eames Aluminum Group (all of these happen to be available at Smart Furniture). Any one artist would be lucky to have created just a single piece as iconic and lasting as all of those.
The Office of Charles and Ray Eames still functions today, and almost all of the wonderful furniture, toys and photographs and films they made can be seen, used, and played with today.
Design StoryThere are three versions of the Eames Desk, two of which are simply mirrored. You can have the standard desk with a left hand drawer or the standard desk with a right hand drawer - which you prefer depends of course on your handedness, your office layout, and the particular restrictions of your space and your own proclivities. But the main alternate version of the desk is the Eames Compact Desk.
The look and feel of the desk are very similar. The compact version is simply smaller. The square feet of the plane of the desk and the wide stance of the entire piece are shortened and constricted to allow the desk to fit better in smaller spaces (or perhaps in a home office or child's room). The drawer is also different, in that it's actually not a drawer, simple a kind of double shelf that has the same appearance as the standard Eames Desk from the front.
