DESIGNERCharles and Ray Eames
Charles and Ray Eames are perhaps the most celebrated designers of the 20th century. Married in 1941, the Eames duo are responsible for some of the most critically acclaimed furniture designs of the modern era. Amongst their most famous designs are the molded plastic chair group, the aluminum chair group, and the plywood folding screen. Although they are most often remembered today for their furniture designs with partner Herman Miller, the Eameses engaged in artistic expression across a broad range of mediums- including architecture and filmmaking.
|During one of their early experiments with molding plywood, Charles and Ray Eames noted that U-shaped cross sections of plywood were stable enough to stand alone. They put a few of them together to create a screen that looked like wooden waves and complemented their molded plywood furniture pieces.|
They joined the 9.5" wide sections of ash or birch plywood with canvas hinges and a synthetic adhesive. Today, a durable woven polypropylene mesh held securely by a new process ensures a longer life without compromising the integrity of the original design.
RESOURCESCare and Maintenance:
For normal cleaning, dust furniture daily with a slightly damp, soft cloth. Wipe dry with a dry, soft cloth in the direction of the wood grain. Once a month, clean the surface with a soft cloth dampened with a quality cleaner formulated for wood furniture. Wipe the surface in the direction of the wood grain to remove dirt and fingerprints. Wipe dry with a clean, dry cloth. Twice a year, apply a good quality emulsion wax to the finish with a soft cloth. Emulsion wax is clear and prevents fingerprints.
For minor repair of water rings, stains, and scratches, rub the surface lightly in the direction of the wood grain using No. 000 steel wool. Apply a scratch-removing polish with a color and value that simulate the veneer. If the scratches are deep, consult a professional furniture refinisher.
