The Herman Miller Embody Chair designed by Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber
At A Glance: The Embody Chair is the world's first health positive chair. Sitting in this baby will actually improve the health of your back and spine, make you more comfortable, and support every part of your body. Not bad for an office chair. Designed by Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber, this chair is the current gold standard in the ergonomic furniture world.
What's To Like: The first thing you notice about this chair is how good it looks. It's not just great engineering and ergonomics, its great style. It has a narrowing back and up-curving "floating" armrests, all of which are beautiful, adjustable, and do your body good (in a manner of speaking). Speaking of adjustment, there is hardly an inch of this chair that can't be. This is a performance chair, and everything was designed with the individual in mind; it can be adjusted to fit you like a glove. It looks cool, if feels great, and it makes you healthier.
What's Not to Like: We've done a lot of testing on this chair, and while every demographic loves it, it is designed for one who likes to work with a slight (or major) recline. While you can sit in an upright posture and still feel right at home, you get the most utility out of the Embody Chair when you're working in a reclined position. Just play with the Backfit Adjustment and Tilt Limiter and find the optimal setting for you.
The Bottom Line: You can search for a more accomplished office chair, but you won't find one. And you'll probably get really bored, so don't do that. Just take our word that this is the absolute top of the line when it comes to ergonomic, high performance office chairs.
More Than Just Comfort Designed by Bill Stumpf (who pioneered the Aeron Chair) and Jeff Weber, Embody goes a step beyond being merely "heath-neutral". Over time, it can actually improve the health of the person sitting in it. Scientific studies have shown that Embody users can experience better circulation, reduced resting heart rates, and less tissue damage around the sitting muscles. Embody promotes natural alignment in the spine, relieving stress across the entire back no matter how you twist and turn.
Pixelated Support Through years of research and development, Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber incorporated health-beneficial features such as the Pixelated Support System- a dynamic mesh of adjoining seat materials that has been proven to increase circulation and reduce strain on cell tissue.
This breakthrough chair surface, combined with new tilt technologies and unwavering back support, means the Embody Chair can provide lavish comfort for hours. And of greater importance, it lets you be better to your body every time you take a seat. Since Embody is warranted for 12 years, sitting in a chair that enhances blood circulation and distributes pressure at a granular level across your back, thighs, and sitting muscles can truly affect how your body feels from day to day.
Move Freely Embody's Backfit adjustment and seat conform to your unique shape and distribute weight evenly. Embody's shape mimics the spine, providing subtle support along the entire back that shifts with your movements. The Backfit creates a dynamic surface that reacts to your movements every time you shift.
The narrow, frameless form along the back allows for freedom of movement along the neck and shoulders, which allows for a greater range of motion through the arms. Embody's dynamic frame can shift and twist right along with your spine, making is easy to lean back and stretch or even or turn without sitting forward.
Rounded Edges It's difficult to tell where the chair's edges are even when you sit in it, because there are no hard edges anywhere along the frame. Rigid edges running under the thighs can lead to poor circulation and the need for frequent stretching. But with the Herman Miller Embody Chair, all edges flex under the sitter's movements, ensuring an optimal distribution of weight. You don't so much sit in an Embody Chair as you do float over it.
The seat edge at the thighs is fully adjustable, allowing you to find the seat depth optimal for your proportions. Adjustable tilt limiter allows the user to lean back with experiencing unwanted lift in the thighs; instead, the legs remain roughly parallel to the floor, preventing stress on the knees, ankles, and things.
Ventilating Surface To promote the flow of heat away from the body that can build up under the legs and back over time, Herman Miller developed the Pixelated Support system. This 4-layer mesh is filled with negative space which permits a much greater amount of air flow than traditional fabric and frame chairs. Every square inch reacts under your movements. When you shift, you seat shifts. The extremely responsive nature of the Pixelated Support material means Embody users can sit for hours without experiencing uncomfortable heat-buildup.
Unparalleled flexibility, soft, breathable materials, ergonomics and comfort that comes with a 12 year warranty.
Herman Miller is committed to manufacturing top-quality products using environmentally friendly production processes and materials. The Embody Chair exemplifies this dedication to environmentally friendly practices and is MBDC Silver Cradle to Cradle certified. Some of its most outstanding green features are listed here.
The Embody Task Chair is up to 95 percent recyclable and is composed of 42 percent recycled materials. In addition, its steel and aluminum materials are 100 percent recyclable. Packaging materials are part of a closed-loop recycling system, allowing them to be recycled perpetually.
Embody is manufactured using 100 percent renewable energy without any air or water emisisons released during production.
Manufactured at an ISO 14001-certified site (which is also a LEED Pioneer building) that on average generates a mere 77 pounds of landfill per month- just enough to fill one trashcan.
The Embody Chair comes fully assembled, or partially assembled if you choose. The fully assembled version costs nothing extra, so we recommend that you go with that! The partially assembled version is for special shipping arrangements that would benefit from smaller packaging
Embody was created by Jeff Weber and the late Bill Stumpf. Stumpf began working with Herman Miller in 1970 and was instrumental in designing the Ergon, Equa, and Aeron Chairs. Arguably the most knowledgeable designer in the world in the field of ergonomic seating, Stumpf came to Herman Miller with partner Jeff Weber with the goal of creating a chair that could "Go beyond just minimizing the negative effects of sitting... that positively impacts your life so you can work and live better." Sadly, Stumpf passed away in 2006. Collaborating with over 30 professionals at Herman Miller, including physicians and PhDs in the fields of biomechanics, physical therapy, and ergonomics, Jeff Weber carried on with Stumpf's vision. His team ultimately succeeded in creating the world's first health-positive office chair.
During Embody's development, Herman Miller's engineering staff operated under three hypotheses:
An office chair can provide therapeutic benefits to it owner, rather than just being a heath-neutral seating device.
Wide variations in spinal curvature can be overcome through ergonomics to achieve natural "postural equilibrium"- the optimal upright point where the eyes are vertically aligned with the hips.
Comfort, liveliness, and health-positive benefits can be realized through the use of dynamic surface pressure, rather than non-dynamic surface pressure.
Using professional input on these three assumptions drove early design of the Embody Chair and resulted in the first protoptypes. In laboratory experiments involving kinematics, preferred postures, common seated tasks, and metabolics, Weber refined Embody's design and confirmed the health-positive benefits it could deliver.
Scientific Studies and Design Links
How the Embody Chair Improves Oxygen Flow While Seated The seat you sit on can affect how easily your body receives oxygen through the bloodstream. Not surprisingly, the Embody Chair encourages superior blood flow due to its ergonomic design and materials.
How Embody Lowers Heart Rate and Improves Cardiovascular Circulation Your heart rate can be a factor in the onset of cardiovascular disease- often caused by inactivity and long periods of sitting. The designers of the Embody Chair decided to tackle this by making a chair that encourages movement.
Making Breathable Seating Possible The Pixelated Support System of the Embody Chair not only relieves stress and pressure from the thighs- it permits air circulation and breathability too.
How Embody Promotes Healthy Alignment The spine of the chair was designed by Weber and Stumpf to mimic the human spine in terms of its flexibility and support. The result is that Embody encourages you to move in a way that's totally natural.
Embody and the Science of Pressure Distribution Herman Miller took on a problem people have struggled with ever since we've sat in chairs- the pressure on the legs while sitting that only increases with time

Smart Furniture Employee Review The folks at Smart Furniture were curious about Herman Miller's Embody Chair and how well it would affect their everyday work environment - so what better way to figure it out than to just sit in one! Mark Rico, our resident rendering specialist, has graciously accepted the opportunity to sit on Embody for one week and write about his thoughts.

First Impressions I was really struck by the look of the Embody when I first picked it up. The backing of the chair was narrower and smaller than I'd imagined, the arms a little wider. Overall, it gave the impression of a kind of alien chair, something you might see on the deck of the Enterprise. I loved the style. The material the chair was upholstered in, Pellicle, was interesting too. It was porous, like a jersey, but also soft and really comfortable. I'd done some reading on the chair beforehand, and knew that it was supposed to help keep your back aligned and supported. Sitting in it, I could immediately feel the difference. The Embody Chair sort of cradles the body - and the effect of the engineering is that sitting up straight, usually my least favorite position, is really really comfortable in the Embody Chair. Comfortable enough that I may or may not return this chair to the store.
The X Factor Well, the Embody Chair is just kind of undeniably cool. The futuristic silhouette, the adjustability, that soon-to-be-iconic backing? It definitely brightens your work day.
The Bottom Line The Embody Chair is the top of the line for office chairs. For comfort, ergonomic design and performance, it cannot be beat. It's expensive, yes, but over it's guaranteed 12 year life span, the cost is probably worth it.

First let me say that for my job I sit in front of a computer 15 hours a day. I have been doing this for 20 years. I have had many task and executive chairs. As a developer I have always worked in a reclined posture which this chair is supposed to be good for. Since so many have noted the positives let me balance these reviews with some negatives which I think all should be aware of: - The chair's build is much cheaper than it looks in the pictures. I was expecting a metal frame at least but everything is made of plastic and rather cheap materials which makes it creek and feel like it should cost a lot less than it does - The back does recline nicely but when you stretch your spine back, it does not stretch enough even on the loosest setting. It flexes only a little and then suddenly caps out digging into ones upper outer shoulders. Maybe it's not for 6'2" people like me because the back seems to short. The other problem is that it doesn't really flex with your back smoothly like advertised. It moves a little side to side but does not contour the back enough. - The bottom of the chair does not recline together with the back. I have had a lot of executive chairs and I like the bottom to recline together with the back for that great cradle feel which is perfect if you have high foot support. This one does not do that so over time you tend to start slouching as you slide lower and lower in the seat. - The arm rests are terrible for several reasons. One, they are very small and in the reclined position there is no support for the elbows as the arm rests are too far forward with a big gap where the elbows are. Second there is no way to lock the inner/outer arm rest adjustment. They always go out of position when I pull the chair around or as I get in/out. Then when you want to readjust them back, it is not easy to do so. Third, the arms are not very sturdy and they wobble, probably because of their plastic build. The arm rest padding is of low quality non breathable foam which won't last long. Padded fabric to match the seat would have been nice. - The padding of both the back and the bottom are very stiff and painful for long seating session. Don't be fooled by 5 min. in the showroom. After a while you can feel the pin pricks of each of the mounting point on the H mounts of the back rest. The bottom also lacks any significant padding and the Italian fabric upgrade will not help. I had to buy a foam cushion to compensate for this design. - The lumbar support is not adjustable. I wish I could configure it to be higher and more arching but there is no way to do this. Again, looks like the seat was designed for smaller people.
Overall this is a mediocre chair and was expecting a lot more for such a high priced and in my opinion overrated chair.
Very comfortable chair. Work in radiology sitting all day and this is the 1st chair that my back doesn't hurt after 10+ hours. Arm rests don't lock and move laterally sometimes, which is annoying. Up and down is fine. Very easy to adjust. Excellent lumbar support, my biggest thing. Maintains good posture. Excellent ergonomics. Kind of wish I'd gotten the shiny aluminum frame.

Comments about Herman Miller Embody Chair:
I'm a big guy (6'6" and about 240 lbs), and I sit in front of a computer at work for 12-14 hour days (as a lawyer for a TV Network). Anyhow, I made the mistake of buying a mid-range chair from another online company (which didn't have any Herman Miller models, but had one that was half the price of the Embody chair, and was supposed to be an equivalent substitute for an H.M. "Aeron" chair)...but the other brand of chair was simply awful, very uncomfortable for long term sitting, and was hard to adjust (and pretty ugly looking in person).
I finally broke down and paid the extra money for the Embody chair. I couldn't be happier -- it is comfy, and the talk of the office (everyone wants to try it). I got white with bright blue fabric, so it really stands out. I love the support on my low back and upper back when I lean back! (the unique chair spine and ribs are truly revolutionary). I didn't want to wait any longer, so I bought an in-stock model that has pre-assembled....definitely worth having it arrive pre-assembled!). The Embody chair is expensive, but if you have the means to buy it (and if you sit for many hours at work), you really can't go wrong with the Embody chair! (Now I just need to figure out what to do with the old chair....I could send it back under the other company's "hassle-free" return policy...except it's a huge hassel (since I have to find boxes, disassemble the chair, pack it, and ship it back across the country...paying the couple hundred dollars for return shipping, AND also the other company wants me to pay for the cost of the "free" shipping it cost to get it to me to begin with!). I will never buy from THAT company ever again! But SmartFurniture is the way to go.
Service and delivery comments:
Delivery was great - on time and trackable online the entire way. Chair came pre-assembled in factory box....so you just cut the straps, and lift off the box off in one piece (and you're done, and ready to start sitting!)

Comments about Herman Miller Embody Chair:
I had second and third thoughts about spending so much on a chair, but I have such severe neck pain from working at my computer, that I decided to take the gamble. I work VERY long hours at the computer (12-18 a day, 6-7 days a week) and have never had a chair that didn't leave me with an ache or pain somewhere. I am also only 5 ft 2 inches tall & have difficulty finding seating that will adjust to my short size.
This chair, however, as accomplished the impossible. No pains after a hard day's work and even my neck pain has dissappeared! For this alone its worth the price!
Yes, I find it ugly, but who cares if it does its primary job of support & comfort? Its made well and should last for years and if it doesn't, it does have that very long warranty. My only regret is that it took me so long to find this chair.
(P.S. Customer service at Smart Furniture is hard to beat as well! This transaction was a total win: great chair and a great company to order it from!)

Comments about Herman Miller Embody Chair:
The arms on the chair can be adjusted in and out, however the don't have a locking mechanism, they gently snap into position. The problem arises when you grip the chair arm to move the chair while standing. Since there is no lock on the horizontal adjustment, the arm will snap back into the widest position when you grab it. It can get annoying if you get up often. I've just left it in the widest position to avoid the issue.
The other thing is not so much an issue as it is a suggestion for future chair updates. Since the chair has so many fine adjustments it would be nice if the adjustment knobs had either numbers or some type of measurement printed on them so you could at least write down your personal settings. Doing that would serve 2 purposes 1) it would be a great help when you first get the chair and are trying to find the best settings. Currently its a guessing game (did I move this knob 2 turns before I moved the other adjustment knobs or not etc) and 2) having printed settings would allow for more than one person to use the chair without messing up the primary persons settings. Right now I have it set perfectly to me but I have absolutely no idea how to get the settings back if someone else changes them....Oh and also the option of a head rest would be beneficial.
Other than these things I would definitely buy it again, best chair (so far) I've ever owned for build quality and most of all comfort. It was worth the investment.
And a shout out to Karen @ Smartfurniture she was awesome!

I use this as my primary home office desk chair/computer chair along with the Herman Miller Envelop desk. A great combo. I have owned five Aeron chairs which were great, but the Embody chair is much better in terms of comfort. The Aeron chair can become cold as the mesh (pellicle) allows total air movement the pellicle is effectively plastic. The embody chair offers 3D cloth fabric that allows good thermals but doesn't feel hot or cold to sit on.

The embody chair is the primary seating in my home office. I wanted an ergonomic computer chair that helped alleviate computer task related stress. Having worked in IT for 30 years I've had numerous chairs that were remarkable for the discomfort they created after long sitting. The embody chair is as perfect a chair for doing computer tasks as is currently possible. If one uses it as intended it alleviates the hunched back, sore neck and bottom syndrome common to IT workers. I'm falling in love with my embody chair - a winter romance - and wish more IT shops would comsider ergonomic health in the workplace. I have the embody chair paired with the envelop desk and together they create the perfect union of form and function.

Comments about Herman Miller Embody Chair:
Today on 12/10/2012 I am just a few days away from returning an Embody chair that I purchased about 2 weeks ago form "Smart Furniture" during the Fall 2012 15% off Herman Miller sale
I will be purchasing a "fully loaded" Aeron chair with a lumbar pad and combination carpet/hard floor casters instead to replace my now 15-year-old Aeron with a broken left arm.
If you have "significant health issues" related to your back and spine, the Embody chair may very well be the preferred - even the best - seating option for you. It's a very comfortable chair and by means of its high degree of flexibility conforms well to the twists and turns, ups and downs of the human spine.
Personally, I have no such health concerns and prefer the Aeron - whcih I give "5 stars" - over the Embody chair for the following reasons:
1) The Aeron overall strike me as being the sturdier and more durable chair. I have no way of confirming this, but my "gut feeling" is that the Embody chair - even though it has the same 12 year warranty as the Aeron - will turn out to be a higher maintenance chair over time. There appears to be a lot more plastic in the Embody chair than in the Aeron. Upon first receiving the Embody, I was "quite surprised" to see just how much plastic there was. I was expecting a somewhat higher percentage of metal construction in a chair as expensive as this (a premium above the Aeron ranging anywhere from about $200 to $500 depending on options). For what it offers and doesn't offer, I do think that the Embody chair is a bit overpriced!
2) The Embody chair will very likely be more difficult to clean and keep clean than an Aeron over time, especially if you have a lighter color Rhythm or Balance fabric. The pellicle on the Aeron certainly will require less cleaning/upkeep over the years. Also don't forget all those smaller plastic, spine-like pieces in the seat back of the Embody; they're bound to be real "dust magnets" over time.
3) The arm rests - especially the "black leather" arm pads - on the Aeron are, in my opinion, far superior to the much thinner vinyl arm pads on the Embody chair. I was very surprised to see this when first unpacking the Embody chair - fully expecting the arm pads to be "all leather" like the appropriate option in the Aeron. An option for "leather arm pads" is not even available on the Embody chair.
4) The Embody chair - unlike the Aeron - cannot tilt forward towards whatever it is that you may be working on. You may not find this to be important, but I do miss this "forward tilt capability" in the much more pricey Embody chair (Why should I pay much more to get less functionality?).
Well, that's my two cents worth. It certainly can be very difficult to decide between the Herman Miller Embody and Aeron chairs.
Be sure to consider all your options carefully and then purchase your chair - preferably online from "Smart Furniture" if you're smart - during one of the two semiannual sales (a three week period in May/June and November/December of each year) for an additional 15% off.
Service and delivery comments:
Shipping from "Smart Furniture" was right on schedule - no problems (shipped on 11/19/2012 and arrived in the far West just 5 days later on 11/24/2012).
The only unexpected difficulty that arose was with the delivery of the chair by the freight company CEVA when they didn't deliver as scheduled by telephone, but came one day later without contacting me first and I spent 4 hours waiting for nothing on 11/27/2012 - an apparently unintentional mistake scheduling the original delivery date.
The chair itself arrived in absolutely "mint condition" - no damage whatsoever anywhere and that includes the external shipping carton.
Arranging the no cost (free shipping as advertised) return of this Embody chair to "Smart Furniture" was as smooth as silk with all needed documentation for doing so sent by e-mail.
While I was at it, I also availed myself of the opportunity to order two Aeron chairs from "Smart Furniture" before the end of this year's second semiannual "Herman Miller" 15% off sale and the likely price increases in 2013.

Comments about Herman Miller Embody Chair:
This chair is possible to sit in for long periods of time and throughout a variety of tasks. I use it to do copious amounts of photo editing and swivel around to take a break with a video game or the news. The arms are as integral to your comfort as you want them to be, not only in height but in their scope in width as well. The fabric remains cool in a warm room which is fantastic.
My favorite feature is once you get it really perfectly dialed ( a process you really must do and is instrumental to enjoying this product), i lift my arms over head and lean back a little more and kind of lock my upper back to the chair. Once this happens and you are reclined just above the limiter's limit, the chair is fused to you. You can twist, stretch, lean as far as the ground to easily grasp dropped items or merely sit up with no effort or constraint. THat is a really wonderful concept.
I can really keep my spine moving without being unsupported constantly either by rocking or shifting back and forth. My other favorite feature is being able to use the chair as a pivot point for lots of back stretches. The chair is supremely sturdy. You can plop on it hard and it catches you nicely, You can lean far far farrrrrr back with out fear and then extend your arms and completely elongate your back muscles any way you like. This is possible like never before because there is nothing boxing in your arms and shoulders. I didn't really get that for two weeks of ownership. But once i lifted my arms overhead and settled in, the freedom of movement dawned on me.
I've suffered from back issues since being a teen (36 now) and the embody chair lets me sit longer than any other chair ever. To those without back issues that may sound silly. To those without circulation issues it may seem even more silly. But to all those people who suffer from both I can't say I've found a better option after having tried many.
Instead of buying 5 awful chairs. Get this one and be done with it. Have you seen the warranty? Its amazing.

Comments about Herman Miller Embody Chair:
Embody is a very nice chair. It's one size fits all, is very firm and supportive, and I love sitting in it.
One thing i'd like to address is... many people say the embody is loud and creaks? I haven't noticed this at all. If you're really wiggling around in it maybe, but I'm 6 foot 160 pounds and it's not noisy for me.
I have an Aeron as well. Choosing between an Embody and an Aeron is a very difficult choice. I'd recommend trying both out because they're both awesome chairs and it really comes down to personal preference.
What I like about the embody: -it's one size fits all -very firm and supportive -the arms are very adjustable, both high and angle -awesome design
Things I don't like about embody: -doesn't feel quite as solid as the aeron. it's still a very sturdy chair, I haven't had any problems, but the embody has more plastic and doesn't FEEL as solid. -sometimes it's too firm. the aeron mesh is more comfortable and u can move around in it more wihtout adjusting it. The embody has to be more carefully adjusted, and when you decide you want to change your position you have to readjust it. -not as breathable as the aeron's mesh, if you work in hot/humid workplaces. I don't, so it's not an issue for me. -while you can adjust the arm height and angle (more adjustable than aeron), you can't turn the arm rests left/right (the aeron can).
Things I like about Aeron: -feels very solid and looks great -extremely comfortable -very breathable -it's very easy to configure, and you can move around in it comfortably without re-configuring it. the mesh is very nice in that aspect.
Things i don't like about aeron: -it's not one size fits all. consult the sizing chart, and choose carefully. -the arms aren't quite as adjustable as embody -overall, if you have a properly configured embody, I really think the embody is more ergonomic.
Really, it comes down to personal preference. When properly adjusted, the Embody is by far the most comfortable and ergonomic chair you can sit in. The embody is very firm however; if you like a softer chair, or if you slide around in your chair and change positions a lot, you have to readjust the embody. Overall though, when properly configured the embody feels more ergonomic and promotes perfect posture.
On the other hand, the aeron's mesh is softer - it's extremely comfortable yet very supportive. You can't go wrong with an Aeron. You CAN however go wrong with the Aeron sizing - make sure you consult the sizing chart.
Honestly I'd really recommend trying both. Aeron is overall very comfortable and versatile. Embody requires more precise adjustment, but when adjusted properly it feels much more ergonomic and supportive than an Aeron, and I like a more firm chair. The Aeron isn't as firm and supportive as the Embody.

Comments about Herman Miller Embody Chair:
Embody is probably the most comfortable chair I've ever sat in. It yells comfort and support....the way you like it. The chairs Aesthetics while suited for a modern office set-up really don't fit in a traditional or classic office setting. This is due to the skeleton like back being exposed.Once again this is a matter of taste and the comfort is worth much more than the aethetics. As they say 'beauty is in the eyes of the beholder'

Comments about Herman Miller Embody Chair:
I used an Aeron for years and always had issues with my back/neck. Realized that as a 6' 5" guy, that it was the way the chair supported my dimensions.
The Embody solves for all of the shortcomings of the Aeron in both its adjustability, flexibility, and comfort.
While I originally was very worried about the value vs. price-point, if I had to do it all over again, I would purchase the chair without wasting a second. It's just THAT good.

Service and delivery comments:
I had to wait for the product's manufacturing lead time but it was not any longer than if I had ordered it from the manufacturer itself. The service was great. Website was easy to use, after sales communication was great (not overly done but at the same time kept you posted of the order's progress), no delivery charge (vs manufacturer would have charged for it), product price was same as manufacturer's, and delivery was right on time. I would not hesitate to buy from Smart Furniture again.

Comments about Herman Miller Embody Chair:
The Embody meets all of my expectations. It is very ergonomic, high quality, lots of adjustments. The only problem I have encountered is that the seat length adjustment retracts back on its own sometimes if you raise your lower legs, for instance to put your feet on the chair legs. It isn't a big deal, but it should lock more securely than that so that you don't have to continually adjust the seat length back out. It is not an overly padded chair in either the seat or back, but I'm one of the boniest people you'll meet and I've never had any pressure problems or numbness. Everything else is great.

I use this chair as my primary work chair at the computer, but also roll it around (on carpet) to my piano and other parts of my music studio.
It's really amazing and comfortable for long periods of time, and it's a beautiful design that makes my studio look great too.
There is something about this chair that looks both futuristic and classic at the same time. So many other chairs look like some kind of ugly insect but this is graceful and simple (yet not remotely simple in its design), and seems just right.
I highly recommend it.

Comments about Herman Miller Embody Chair:
I'm a degreed Industrial Designer and have always loved Herman Miller furniture. It's pricey though. When the Herman Miller twice annual 15% off sale came up around Thanksgiving, I started looking at new retail rather than used/auction. That led me to Smart Furniture. They were the perfect choice for me. Chair I wanted was in stock, shipping was free and arrived only two days later. There was no tax on this +$1000 purchase to boot. It was only slightly more expensive in the end than the used/auction chairs I was looking at. Customer service and responsiveness at Smart Furniture is 5 Star too. I'm impressed. First Class and I get the full Herman Miller warranty from an Authorized Dealer!

Comments about Herman Miller Embody Chair:
The chair is used as a home office chair. For days when a lot of sitting is required, the ergonomics of the chair are excellent. The height adjustment, while smooth, has a clear plastic knob adjuster that feels cheap, not at all something that one would think would be attached to a chair at this price . The adustable arms in terms of raising their height work fine but when I attempt to bring the armrests in toward me, there is no lever, just apparently notches that click into place, the adjustments to do that that aren't very smooth.
Overall, a firm chair with excellent lumbar and thigh support. With the high retail price, consider buying it during the twice a year Herman Miller sale.
I compared this to the Leap chair by Steelcase, which I had at my workplace. The Embody is better looking and the seat and back are a little firmer and more comfortable. The Leaps's armrest are smoother to adjust but the seat cushion is a bit soft. Be sure to take body configuration into consideration.
Service and delivery comments:
The delivery service used by Smart Furniture is to your door versus the usual to the curb only, which makes the overall cost a bit cheaper and more convenient as well.
After the purchase, when I called Smart Furniture, someone answered the phone after two rings. It didn't sound or feel like a call center (as perhaps it wasn't) as the young woman was friendly, responsive and helpful.

Comments about Herman Miller Embody Chair:
I use this chair at home. At work, I have a Steelcase Leap (v1). This chair is better in my opinion. While I put "Not enough padding", it's not uncomfortable. What I thought were chinsy plastic springs are actually quite comfortable. You can tell there's not a lot of padding because after a week of sitting in the chair for 5-7 hours I've already got an indentation. Also, the lumbar starts to poke into your back firmly if you wrench it down too tight. It's noticeably there/absent elsewhere in the chair if you shift off center.
I like how the back flexes as you move, even if you glide to the side and grab something. And speaking of gliding, the chair does exactly that. It's different from my Steelcase, and I can move naturally in it while still keeping good posture. My back feels better sitting in this chair than in the Steelcase, and both of those are properly adjusted.
The stock castors are quite good; they roll on my carpet whereas my previous chair did not. Ships fully assembled, which is nice.
Service and delivery comments:
Delivery date online was originally a Wednesday. Great! It's going to come early. Wednesday comes and goes. Thursday it gets to my city, presumably out for delivery on Friday. No call from the shipper on either Thursday or Friday until he's standing at my door on Friday! Sorry, I gave up waiting on Wednesday.
According to SmartFurniture they were supposed to call before to schedule a delivery window, not call when show up on my doorstep! I wasn't home, they wouldn't release without signature, wouldn't redeliver later in the same day, and wouldn't do Saturday delivery. I wouldn't have needed those options if they had just called like they were supposed to, and I would have arranged to be home for two hours or so. My apartment complex received it because they're awesome like that, but even then it was just luck because the delivery came at 12:30, right in the middle of their lunch hour.

Comments about Herman Miller Embody Chair:
I sit at a desk for 6ish hours a day. Up to about 2 weeks ago, I didn't care what I sat on during this six hours. Then I was given a green light to get new office furniture. It was time to get a good chair. So I went and bought was I considered to be the best from Herman Miller..primarily by name and internet reviews I settled on the Embody. It's biggest strength is definitly design. Looks awesome. It's second largest strength is customization. Great fit adjustments. That said, it is over priced. I assume by name alone it can demand the price tag. So I say, if you want a great chair and don't care about price then this is your chair. If you are on a budget, I think you can get a normal looking chair with same comfort level.

Comments about Herman Miller Embody Chair:
Extremely comfortable chair for anyone who is forced to sit for 40 or more hours a week in a single place. I'm a software engineer who sits in this chair on average > 50 hours per week. At the end of the week, I still feel great, unlike my previous COTS chair that I owned.
Materials: Frame and casters are made from steel, plastic, and aluminum. 4-mesh seat is made from foam, textile, and other materials. Embody is 95 percent recyclable at the end of its useful life.
The Embody Chair is a truly revolutionary product. In nearly every category an office chair can be judged, it either matches or betters it's competition. In many of those categories, it has made contributions that have changed the face of the office furniture industry in a permanent way. The Herman Miller Embody Chair has won awards and praise from every corner of the design world, as well as from manufacturers, environmental groups, physicians, ergonomic scientists, and, of course, customers and office workers. In the end, it's the deep comfort, unwavering support and fresh, modern design that set this chair apart from it's peers. It looks great, it fits great, and it's actually good for you. The Herman Miller Embody Chair is at the forefront of an ongoing shift in the way we look at, experience, and work in office chairs. These are just some of the reasons why you should buy Embody.
With the Embody Chair, your spine will always be supported in the appropriate places (including excellent lumbar region support), your legs, elbows and buttocks will never lose circulation or be in enough discomfort that you have to get up and stretch, or walk around. When you want to recline, or move in your chair to reach an awkwardly placed object, this chair moves with you, maintaining support and total ergonomic principles.
Back support is vitally important to your health, but it's often ignored by traditional office chairs, that usually give you a rigid backing (often padded) which can possibly recline. Essentially, it's a back with all the flexibility and support of a wooden board. With the Embody Chair, every area of your back is supported and moved with, as the Tri-Flex system administers comfort and support in three distinct zones. Increased back support means increased back health; which means better circulation, less discomfort and distress, higher rates of productivity and activity, and better moods and states of mind while you're working. If you have back support needs, the Embody Chair was made for you.
When you buy an Embody Chair from Smart Furniture, the chair you receive will have been fully customized by you in our Smart Designer customization tool. You choose the color, the finish, the adjustments and attachments. In the end, the chair you buy will be as unique and personal as you are.

Q:
I need to sit almost vertically with good lumbar support. Is this chair capable of supporting me in this position, or is the default upright position going to recline my back?
The Embody Chair was designed to best work with a reclined posture. You can lock the back upright to prevent it from reclining as well as adjust the curvature of the spine to match your back. It could work well for you but please note: the seat on the Embody is not the most cushy, sitting upright 100% of the time you may be more comfortable in a foam, mesh or gel seat.

Q:
I received my Embody chair today, but seat of the chair wouldn't lift. How can I fix it?
Embody Chairs are shipped in the lowest position and can experience the following:
Vibration in transit can cause the cylinder to "settle" into the base deeper than intended. The chair will appear to be "stuck" in the lowest position. This can be corrected by (1) standing over the chair, (2) firmly pulling up on the "joy stick" until it almost touches the rubber tension knob, (3) grabing the opposite side of the seat with your free hand, and (4) pulling up on the chair while swiveling the chair back and forth.
AND/OR
The activation end of the cable may have come loose from the top end of the pneumatic cylinder. This can be corrected by (1) from the left side of the chair, as seated, locate the activation cable. this can be found between the under side of the seat and the top of the tilt. (2) Grasp the cable and attempt to pull it toward you. (3) If the cable comes out you will can re-attach it by slipping the ball end into the fork on the top of the cylinder. You may need a flashlight to see the mechanism. (4) Snap the cable collar into the holder on the top of the cylinder. (5) Activate the "joy stick"

You flick the clear plastic "switch" on the right side of the chair, and don't put pressure on it. It is basically the same as every other desk chair. They show it in the review video. If that doesn't work I am assuming it is broken. Now looking at the date I am assuming you have solved this problem.

If pushing the little joystick in the middle of the adjustment knob just below and to the right of the seat doesn't do it (you might need to lift your wight off of it), then it might be broken.

Can this chair be used at a office counter environment. Seat of chair needs to be 26" above floor. Please advixe
Asked on 11/28/2010 by Bruce Woolpert from Cupertino, CA
Even with the extended height cylinder on an Embody the maximum seat height is 22". You will need a work stool like the Aeron Stool (http://www.smartfurniture.com/products/Aeron-Stool.html) that has a higher seat height. Embody does not have a stool version.
Answered on 11/29/2010 by Melanie from Smart Furniture

Agreed. I think the Aeron Stool would be your best bet. An Embody Stool would be interesting though!
BASE, FRAME & ARMPAD MAINTENANCE: For normal cleaning, wash surface with a soft cloth soaked in mild detergent and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Do not use solvents or abrasive kitchen cleaners.
BALANCE FABRIC MAINTENANCE: For normal cleaning, vacuum fabric as needed. Vacuuming picks up dust and reduces the need for professional cleaning. Do not brush fabric or use a vacuum attachment with a rotary brush.
To spot-clean fabric, immediately soak up the stain with a soft absorbent cloth. Do not dry the stain completely or it may set. The longer a stain is allowed to remain on a fabric, the more difficult it is to remove.
For water-based stains such as coffee, soft drinks, fruit juices, or milk use a water-based cleaner (specifically made for cleaning fabric) or a solution of mild (alkaline) warm soapy water (not overly soapy) applied with a damp clean cloth or sponge. Work the cleaner into a lather or foam. Never use hot water, it will set the stain. Avoid scrubbing.
OTHER CARE & MAINTENANCE CONSIDERATIONS: Do not over apply water or any liquid solution to fabric. Excessive wetting of the fabric with any liquid solution may result in permanent damage to the material. Do not rub too vigorously or you may damage the nap of the fabric or break fibers. Soak up all remaining solution and then use another clean cloth or sponge dipped in cool water to remove any residue. Let fabric dry thoroughly and then vacuum well before using.
If large areas are soiled or stains resists cleaning, contact a professional cleaning firm.

Q:
How do I know what color the back of the Embody will be? I have seen photos where it is graphite and also where it is translucent (referring to the flexible plastic lining the back of the chair, not the I-shaped supports).
For chairs with Rhythm Black, Balance Carbon, or Balance Black upholstery and graphite frame finish, the back mat will be graphite. For all other options, the back mat is translucent.
Answered on 10/8/2010 by Smart Furniture
Q:
What can I do if the fabric is worn within the 12-year warranty period?
Herman Miller's 12-year warranty covers the chair for normal wear and tear. Fabric covers are replaceable. Warranty does not cover fabric that is soiled, stained, or damaged due to improper cleaning.
*Please note that Balance White fabric is not warrantied against discoloration.
Answered on 10/8/2010 by Smart Furniture
Q:
If I order braking casters, do all five wheels lock in place?
All five casters have brakes, BUT not locks. With weight in the chair the casters roll freely, but with weight removed an internal brake causes friction on the wheels which does allow the chair to roll with some additional effort.
Answered on 10/8/2010 by Smart Furniture
Q:
Which base option is more durable? Which option is lighter? Do the terms polished aluminum, titanium and graphite mean different material, or just different colors on the same material?
All Embody Chair bases are cast aluminum and are the same weight. The material on all bases are equally durable, however they vary in cosmetic durability. By far, the graphite base shows the least amount of wear and tear, scuffs, etc.
Rhythm is 100% polyester with no upcharge for application on the Embody chair as the fabric is an existing one for Herman Miller being used on other seating. Balance is 100% polyester knit, created specially for the Embody Chair. Loft, or thickness, gives it a cushy feel. Air and light pass through it more easily, providing maximum cushion and breathability.
