Product Overview:

Eames Aluminum Group Executive Chair by Herman Miller
designed by Charles and Ray Eames

Herman Miller introduced the Eames Aluminum Group in 1958 as Charles and Ray Eames' response to the need for high-quality indoor-outdoor furniture. It soon moved inside exclusively. Herman Miller celebrates the chair that came in from the cold. Available in management, executive and side chair models, this design remains a classic of style and comfort.

This high-back executive chair utilizes a lightweight aluminum frame with suspended upholstery, 5-star base with casters, tilt-swivel mechanism and seat-height adjustment.

This chair is an example of the perfect design discussed earlier in this piece. When Charles and Ray Eames made a piece of furniture, they were often trying to make something multipurpose like the LCW or the molded plastic chairs, or else something "perfect" for a certain task, like the Eames Lounge Chair and the Eames Aluminum Group Executive Chair. These were chairs that used innovative techniques and materials to create something perfectly tailored to a need. In the case of the Lounger that need was rest and relaxation, and in the case of the executive chair, the need is a fine, prestigious, and powerful looking office chair. This is the kind of chair that belongs in the corner office or behind the biggest desk; the kind of chair that demands respect, while at the same time never being ostentatious or pretentious. It's simple, it's sleek and cool and retro, and it's designed to build a subtle picture of prestige. It also happens to be beautiful.

The executive chair is similar to the management chair, but there are a few key differences. The first major difference is the size of the back of the chair. Rather than be smaller than the seat, like the management, the executive is actually a long back chair. The elegant combination of leather and aluminum ribbing rises much further than in the management. The effect is not imposing or intimidating, but it is certainly more prestigious. It gives off an air of the old school large office chairs favored by high powered execs, but it's in an undoubtedly modern and sleek, thin package. It retains the mystique of the old versions of executive chairs but replaces their silly or pretentious exteriors with the simple, lovely creations of Charles and Ray Eames. Nothing about the chairs is old-world or antique looking. While this is a classic example of classic modern furniture, it's not dated. If anything, the cachet of the chair has only grown in the years between it's debut and today, because the ultra-cool, retro look has come into style even more than it was at the time.

Of course, this is also a flexible chair, and it doesn't have to be used behind a desk. While that is where it was designed to go, there are other places that will work, including lobbies and public spaces, and even homes. The high back of the chair makes it perfect for the desk, but that shouldn't be a limiting feature.

Another feature of the chair is the more sculpted back. The backing of the chair, the aluminum ribs, have a bit more curve and bit more give than the management version of the chair. That's just one more reason this is a great chair for the office. It will keep you back comfortable for longer, and give you a little more literal flexibility. That's going to really come in handy for long days at the office, when you need to do sustained work at your desk for hours and hours at a time. When you don't have to get up all the time because you're uncomfortable and stretch, that's a ton of productivity you're not losing to an uncomfortable or unsuitable chair. With the Eames Aluminum Group Executive Chair, you don't run that risk. This is a comfortable, as well as a stylish chair.

This is a chair that looks the best in the office, but looks good in the home and in public areas as well. High style, aesthetic beauty, functionality; it's a classic design from Charles and Ray Eames.

The Herman Miller Eames Aluminum Executive Chair is also known by the following manufacturer Item Numbers: EA337P, EA337.

Charles and Ray Eames knew the new look of their furniture made it an option for offices and corporate settings. The rich leather and and polished aluminum looked nothing if not professional, but they also looked very cool and sophisticated. It was perfect for the office environment. The chair gave off an air of prestige and even privilege, but it was never pretentious or snooty. Because it was so new, and so technically advanced, that kind of pretension was really impossible. Hipper, younger offices, then and today, loved the chair. They loved the newness of it, the comfort and the support, and the attitude. The chairs were gorgeous and accomplished and vigorous. Charles and Ray Eames ran their own office, and knew all about the pitfalls and necessities of interior decorating in a work environment. That's why the designed a special chair for office.

The rest of the aluminum group is not specific to the office, though they can be used there, but the office was certainly on the minds of Herman Miller and Charles and Ray when they decided to revamp the aluminum group. They saw a whole new group of customers in a world that the indoor/outdoor chair would never have been able to penetrate. Because they wanted to emphasize the office-oriented nature of the group, and make themselves available to new markets and new kinds of buyers, they designed a specifically office-use chair called the executive chair. The Eames Aluminum Group Executive Chair, to be exact.

The executive version was different from the rest of the collection is a few significant ways. The most important, and the most noticeable, was the back of the chair. The back of the executive version is taller than the management, and unlike the lounge, it's pretty much straight up and down. The backing is also slightly different in a structural sense. All the chairs have small extra curve in the lower back region of the chair, to give a little more comfort and support. The Executive version has extra curviness. All of these additions were made to specifically increase the usefulness and attractiveness of the chair in the workplace. It was definitely designed for the big desk and corner office, and there are two reasons why, both relating to different concerns.

The first reason is comfort and endurance. That's why the back of the chair has a bit of extra curviness. That's to give the user's back more support, so that it can hold up better over long days at the office. Studies have shown that sitting in chairs for long periods of time without appropriate lower back support can seriously affect the health of your spine. Of course, those studies were done and published decades after these chairs came out. Just one more feather in the cap of Charles and Ray Eames.

The second reason is prestige. The high back of the chair is meant to be impressive, if not imposing. It's meant to be a kind of update to the high-backed and leather-upholstered business chairs of the past. A slicker, more hip, and sophisticated update. Even though the work climate has changed in the last several years, it's still important to have furniture that says something about your office, your business, and yourself. These chairs are an opportunity for serious and elegant self-presentation. Charles and Ray designed the angles, the materials and the shape of the chair to fit the task of being impressive, being attractive, and being great for the office.

You'll be hard pressed to find a chair with a greater pedigree than the Eames Aluminum Group Executive Chair, and you won't find an executive chair anywhere with the historic value and superb modern look that this one offers. It's a true classic, and designed just for the office.

Design Storyback to top

This chair is different from both the management and the lounge versions of the chair, but the differences are subtle. It is designed to be a kind of power chair, a corner office chair, and a chair that gives off prestige, beauty, and style. The color, the material, and the form of the chair all influence the way it feels, the way it looks to both the user and the visitor (to the office). That the chair succeeds on each of those important fronts is special enough, but it flourishes on several other levels as well. That it does is a testament to the subtle and penetrating design instincts possessed by Charles and Ray Eames.

The Executive chair is not meant to be intimidating, however; that would not have been in line with the taste of Charles and Ray. Impressive is one thing, and something that made almost all of their products, intimidating another. The title given the chair, the Eames Aluminum Group Executive Chair, seems more serious than the actual chair is. That isn?t to say it's not beautiful, not prestigious, not perfectly styled; only to say that intimidation isn't something that Charles and Ray were ever interested in. The chair is very fine, but it's also flexible, and it certainly is not a chair that would look out of place in a regular office, as opposed to the biggest office.

The look of the chair is distinct from the other looks in the aluminum series. It has a high back, but not as high as the lounge chair. However, unlike the lounge, the executive doesn't begin in a reclined position. It appears straight up, and has to be adjusted to recline if that's what the user wishes to do. The back is more curvy than the management version, and that makes it a bit more comfortable on the back. The extra curves are possible only because of the elongated back, which the management version doesn?t have. The executive version of the chair uses the same materials as the managment and the lounge, but they don't have the same effect. When you look at the lounge chair, the form of the piece immediately puts your mind at ease, makes you think of comfort and lying down. When you look at the management, it gives off an air pf multi-purpose use, of a side chair that looks great and rolls. When you look at the executive, you think desk chair. You think work chair. You think behind-a-desk chair.

Which is not to say you can't use this chair in other places. It wouldn?t look odd, for instance, around certain types of dinner tables, or in a conference room, or in a waiting room. It is however meant for the office, and it looks the part.

The high back is one of the reasons why, and when combined with the fine leather and the polished aluminum, the effect is very business like indeed. The Eames had a wonderful sense of proportion and space, and they really bring it to bear in this series.

This chair, as well as the other chairs in the series, are available now from Smart Furniture at a great value.
