Herman Miller Eames Aluminum Group Lounge Chair
Swivel Base (EA316)
by Charles and Ray Eames

Herman Miller introduced the Eames Aluminum Group in 1958 as Charles and Ray Eames' response to the need for high-quality indoor-outdoor furniture. It soon moved inside exclusively. Herman Miller celebrates the chair that came in from the cold. Available in management, executive and lounge models, this design remains a classic of style and comfort.

This lounge chair utilizes a lightweight aluminum frame with suspended upholstery, 4-star base with 1/2" glides for hard floors or carpet, swivel and fixed seat height.

This is a chair clearly meant for rest and relaxation. A chair to watch movies and television in, to read in, or to simply take a nap. The Eames Alumnium Group Lounge Chair is the perfect fit for any modern living room. The ottoman that comes with it, built in the same classic style as the chair itself, is a beautiful complement, both in terms of comfort and style. This is a chair that looks great, looks right, and looks totally classic in nearly any setting. Those are two very different goals; making a chair that looks and feels great, that's good for showing off and good for reading in, but the Eames were very interested in solving complex problems like that, and they were very good at it as well. So how did they solve the problems with this, the lounge chair?

To make the chair comfortable and lounge like, they made some big changes to the original management chair prototype. The most obvious change is the length of the back of the chair, which is much longer than normal. Of course this is to give your head, neck and shoulders appropriate support in positions of recline and postures of lounge. However, unlike the executive version, the lounge chair isn't imposing or businesslike. And that's because of the automatic tilt present in the chair. The chair starts out in a partial recline, and from there you can get into a position you like. This keeps the chair from rising too high in the air, and it also of course makes it more comfortable, more relaxing. This is a chair to take a few naps in, not to sign a few contracts in. It fits in the living room, not the boardroom or the corner office. Another big addition that made the chair more comfortable was the ottoman, which comes in handy when you use the chair like a recliner (as you should). Because the seat of the chair is the same dimension as the other chairs in the series, you need a place to rest your legs when you're in positions of recline. The ottoman looks just as beautiful as the chair, with the same materials, and it's serves its purpose with the same suspension techniques used in the lounge chair.

One adjustment to the chair that makes it more comfortable is the extra curve in the back, not present in the management version of the chair. This gives a bit more support to your back, and a little more flexibility overall.

This chair is meant explicitly for the living room, sitting room, den, etc. Wherever you want to relax or invite guests to do the same. But it's not restrictive; the look of the chair is so classic and modern that it can be fit into lobbies, waiting rooms, covered porches; less traditional areas in which folks still need a bit of relaxation. The Eames Aluminum Group Lounge Chair measures success in looks, comfort, and classic style. It succeeds on every front, and has for the last 50 years.

Design Storyback to top

This is the kind of chair that looks just right. As soon as you see it, the ideas of comfort and support come into your brain. It looks like precisely what the name implies; a perfect place to lounge, to nap, to let the worry and bustle of a busy day fade away to background noise. They also happen to be impeccably designed and impossibly beautiful, as well as classic, historically significant, totally comfortable. It's a great entry in the aluminum series.

The lounge chair version of that series is exactly what it sounds like. It's a kind of recliner. It comes with a beautiful, matching ottoman that Charles and Ray Eames designed to go along with it. The lounge chair is meant primarily for home use, but it has other practical applications as well; this is a great chair for certain types of offices, certain types of public places, etc. Anywhere where someone needs to lay back and relax in comfort and style, the Eames Aluminum Group Lounge Chair is there to serve the need.

But, as stated before, the need is primarily in the home. This is a chair that's most comfortable where you're most comfortable. In the living room, allowing you to read or watch TV or converse comfort. Possibly in the bedroom, for when you need to take a quick break. Out on the covered patio, allowing you to relax outdoors, or inside a screened in porch. While the materials in the chair obviously cannot be left out in the weather, there's no reason that the chair shouldn't still be able to provide some modicum of outdoor usefulness.

When you combine the Eames Aluminum Group Lounge Chair with the special ottoman designed just for it, it really is as comfortable as any recliner, while being more stylish and more beautiful by several orders of magnitude. The long, flexible comfort pocket that is created in the chair makes you as comfortable as you can be, and the long back keeps your head, neck and shoulders supported in a way that the management version doesn’t. This is a chair meant for napping, meant for relaxation; meant for lounging. It's all in the name.

The look of the chair is of a piece with the rest of the collections, but there are several differences. For one it comes with a much longer back than the management version. This is to help keep your head, neck and shoulders supported while you relax. The chair is also already disposed in a recline position; it can recline further, but for the most part it's a chair meant exclusively for laying back. Another major difference is in the back of the chair, where there are more curves than in the management version. This too is to keep you better supported and more comfortable during long sessions of napping or reading or watching television. The Eames believed in something called the guest host relationship. They wanted their chairs to anticipate the needs of the user, to surprise them with how comfortable they were and how easy, and to wow them with beauty. Just like the perfect host. That's why there are so many different versions of the Eames Aluminum Group Chairs; they all fit particular needs, while remaining generally flexible to accommodate the user. Just another impressive Eames achievement. The Eames Aluminum Group Lounge Chair is available now from Smart Furniture.

This is probably the chair in the group with the biggest deviation from the norm. It doesn't really look like either one of the others when it comes to form. The materials are the same, the color contrasts are the same (unless you choose different colors than black leather and aluminum, which you can do with the Smart Furniture customization engine) but the look and feel of the chair is much different. It's a true variation on a theme, and it's beautiful in it's own right. It's also comfortable; it had to be, it's a lounge chair.

Charles and Ray Eames have a long history with lounge chairs. They made possibly the greatest, and certainly the most famous lounge chair in history when they created the Eames Lounge Chair. A creation in molded plywood, leather, and thick cushioning, the chair was gorgeous and accomplished in every way. But it's only a single entry in their long line of excellent lounge chairs. Probably second on the list is the Eames Aluminum Group Lounge Chair, which borrows all the minimalist, hip, beautiful materials and technical achievements of the Aluminum Group Chairs and puts them in the body of a laid back, comfy, nap-inducing lounge chair. Charles and Ray were famous for their lounge chairs for a very good reason; they were excellent, they looked great, and they felt great. On a lazy Sunday afternoon, there was nowhere else you'd rather be than snuggled into the Eames Lounge Chair or laid out on the Eames Aluminum Group Lounge Chair.

In terms of form, there are three major departures present on the lounge chair. Each of the departures from the norm serve the chair in distinct and productive ways, and each is unique to the lounge chair; you won't find them on the other chairs in the series. For one, there is an ottoman that comes with the lounge version, a second piece of the comfort and relaxation puzzle. The ottoman is made with the same materials and subscribes to the same technical philosophies of the aluminum chairs. That is to say, it's made with beautiful leather and polished aluminum, and rather than being a solid shell it makes use of the comfort pockets created when leather is stretched expertly between two "ribs," in this case of polished aluminum. That makes the ottoman comfortable and supportive for you feet. The ottoman is a useful and even necessary addition to the collection. The lounge chair is unable to serve as a modern kind of recliner without it, because the seat of the lounge chair is the same size as the seats for the other chairs. You can't put your feet up on it. All of the Eames loungers came with beautiful ottomans, including the famous Eames Lounge Chair, and all are and were the better for it.

The second major departure is the tilted nature of the chair. The Eames Aluminum Group Chair is tilted back, the same way a recliner might be, or another lounge chair. This is of course to keep you comfortable and relaxed in your living room, den or what have you. But it is also to separate this chair from it's aluminum group brothers. It marks it clearly as a lounge creation, as a home fixture and not an office chair. The angle of the recline is subtle and very well balanced, another testament to the perfectionism and talent possessed by Charles and Ray Eames. When you sit in this chair, recline and with your feet up, you are immediately transported to relaxation. You're automatically disposed to that mode. And that's the intention. This is a comfortable, beautiful, and cozy creation.

The third major departure has to do with the length of the back of the chair, which is very long. Much longer than the management version of the piece. The length is to give your head, neck and shoulders the support they don't really get from the smaller chairs, the management and the executive (though the executive has a tall back as well, and is itself more supportive of those regions than the management). The comfort pocket, that technologically advanced creation of the Eames', is extended in the Eames Aluminum Group Lounge Chair to accommodate your head and neck and shoulders. The chair is emblematic of total relaxation; in the hammock-like materials of the chair your whole body should be comfortable and relaxed, from your feet on the ottoman to your head at the top of the chair. You're reclined, you're comfortable, and you have great support. That's great design when it comes to lounge chairs.

The lounge chair is somewhat adjustable as well, but not to the level that today's modern recliners and office chairs are. You can go back and forth, but that's about it. There's only so much you can ask of a modern (as in post-war) marvel of design. The Eames Aluminum Group Lounge Chair is a chair apart, a model that belongs in the collection because it's different from the main prototype. Charles and Ray wanted their ideas to be available to every type of user, and this was the perfect way for them to get their chair in your home. Whether you want to do some reading, watch movies or TV, or simply take a nap, it's hard to do better than the lounge chair.
