Product Overview:

Eames Aluminum Group Management Chair by Herman Miller
designed by Charles and Ray Eames

At A Glance: The Eames Aluminum Group Management Chair is one of the most important contributions Charles and Ray Eames made to modern design. The sleek look of the chair, its minimalism and classic lines, all combined to create an iconic look and a breathtaking profile. Surely amongst the most renowned of the mid-century design pieces.

What's To Like: This is a beautiful piece of modern art...for you to sit in. How often do you get an opportunity to just cold sit on a world-renowned work of art? But it's not just beautiful. This chair is also adjustable and suited to working long hours at a desk. Comfortable and adaptable to lots of different situations and office styles, this is a chair for all seasons. In the boardroom, behind a desk, and under your butt, it always looks and works great.

What's Not to Like: Sitting on a masterpiece isn't cheap. Even though this is a classic case of getting what you pay for, you do have to make a bit of an investment in a chair like this. Also, if you're the type of person who demands a lot of padding, this chair might not be for you.

The Bottom Line: This is an all time classic. And while the price is a bit higher than your average office chair, this work of art is worth every penny. Comfortable, gorgeous, and famous.

Herman Miller introduced the Eames Aluminum Group in 1958 as Charles and Ray Eames' response to the need for high-quality indoor-outdoor furniture. It soon moved inside exclusively. Herman Miller celebrates the chair that came in from the cold. Available in management, executive and side chair models, this design remains a classic of style and comfort.

Lightweight aluminum frame with suspended upholstery. 5-star base with tilt-swivel mechanism and standard manual seat height adjustment or optional pneumatic seat height adjustment with tilt lock.

The Eames Aluminum Group Management Chair is the shortest of the bunch, with the back of the chair being shorter than the seat. This does three things for the chair. One, it makes it more stylish, more modern, and bit cooler in that retro sense discussed earlier. Two, it makes the chair less imposing, and therefore open to more activities than simply work and leisure. This is a side chair with wheels and taste, a chair that can fit any room and any purpose without seeming ostentatious. Three, it acts as a kind of Eames signature; this same kind of big seat little seat back ratio is seen in the LCW, the "design of the century," and Charles and Ray loved to be inventive and playful with their designs. Inverting the proportions of the traditional fine furniture chair certainly fits into that category.

Another thing that separates the chair from the other two, the main and most obvious thing, is that it's not designed for a specific task. The title of the chair refers less to office life and more to the management of all facets. If you need a desk chair for your home or work office, this chair will look great, be comfortable, and serve that purpose well. If you need chairs for your kitchen or dining room that fit a modern or retro design scheme, then these are the chairs for you. If you need simple side chairs, chair to go in boardrooms and conference rooms, this is the right choice. If you want a chair that can easily ferry between covered patios and screened in porches, and from thence to indoor localities, then look no further. This is the most basic chair in the Eames Aluminum Group Chair collection, and it's that way for a reason. Charles and Ray believed in a kind of design democracy, where fine furnishings could be made and sold cheaply (or more cheaply than they had been in the past) and were style, grace and beauty could make their way into the average American home. Making products that could wear a lot of hats is a natural fit for this kind of philosophy.

The Eames Aluminum Group Management Chair is a flexible, attractive, classic home and office solution that looks and feels great. You won't find so fine a chair anywhere with such a pedigree, such a flexible nature, and such a uniquely cool look.

Designback to top
This is the do it all chair, the jack of all trades, the chair that can fit anywhere. It was designed as the essential chair in the collection, the chair from which the other two drew inspiration and marked themselves as different through changes in the original design. For instance, the other two chairs in the series have longer backs, more attention therefore to back and head and neck support. The lounge chair is in recline and comes with an ottoman, marked difference from the management chair. The executive chair uses the same kind of suspension but extends it to make long days at the office a bit more manageable. The extension also makes the chair a bit more prestigious, a bit more intimidating and corner-office like. But at root, at the heart of their look, their stylization and their engineering, the other two models in the series are the children of the management chair, the original design.

Charles and Ray had specialized the collection with the lounge chair and the executive chair, and they were now interested in making a chair that was similar to their original prototype, and capable of more than singular tasks. The management version would be the chair that could perform in any situation, and be flexible and durable enough to bridge the gap between the office and the home. It would have one foot in each place, and be comfortable and supportive to boot.

The chair is upholstered in rich black leather and structurally, it's held up and together by polished aluminum. The effect is striking and beautiful without being overpowering. While the executive and lounge versions of the chair could be centerpieces in a design scheme, this chair is meant to serve and support, not dominate the design scheme. It looks great in nearly any room or home, and it works well in myriad different situations.

For instance, many dining rooms find that the Eames Aluminum Group Management Chair is just right for their tables and their scheme. Kitchens find the same thing; these chairs don't have to be in an upscale environment. They don't look out of place in the living room, on a covered patio or screened in porch, or behind a desk. They were designed to do everything, and doing everything is something they can and have done, for the last half century.

The chair doesn't have a few of the features that were put into the lounge and the executive versions of the chair. For instance, the back of the chair is a bit less curvy, and therefore not as exquisitely comfortable as the executive (but it's still very comfortable). The back is also not as long or in a position of recline, like the lounge. But the pared down and flexible management chair has advantages as well. The lower back prevents the chair from dominating rooms and offices, making it great for more community-oriented spaces. The smaller size allows it to fit into tighter places, and even to serve as a kitchen table. The smaller size also gives the chair a non-traditional seat to seat back ratio, where the seat is actually larger than the seat back. This is something Charles and Ray Eames loved to do; you can see it in one of their first creations, the LCW. The Eames Aluminum Group Management Chair is in a class of its own; it's the original, and still as useful, beautiful, and stylish as it ever was.

Design Storyback to top

The Eames Aluminum Group Management Chair is the jack of all trades chair, the one that Charles and Ray decided was the main prototype for the rest of the series. The essential aluminum chair, the management version is versatile, beautiful, retro-cool, and works with nearly any design scheme, any room, and any purpose.

It looks a bit different than the other chairs in the series. To begin with, it's smaller and better able to fit in any room, and scheme. The back is not elongated, the way it is with the lounge and the executive versions of the chair. The back of the chair is also a bit simpler; it has single curve to accommodate the back, but it doesn't have the extra frills of the lounge and the executive version. The biggest advantage the chair has is that it looks great, but it also looks non-specific. When you're looking at the other two chairs you immediately see them for the purposes they were meant to achieve. One look at the lounge chair and you know exactly what it's meant for, and the same goes for the executive version. They have clear, defined roles in the world of the aluminum group, but the management chair avoids that kind of tagging. This is, of course, intentional on the part of the Charles and Ray Eames. They wanted their designs to have a democratic sense. They wanted them to be affordable, they wanted them to be easy to make and put together, and they wanted them to fit in with American homes and American offices. With the Eames Aluminum Group Management Chair, they found a piece that could answer all those needs and any others that users might think of. These chairs don?t look out of place anywhere, unless the design scheme is diametrically opposed to them. More than that, they look great practically everywhere they can be put. They lend their low-drama retro cool, their comfort pockets, and their relative affordability. They fit where you need them to, and they do all kinds of jobs. They're a truly brilliant type of chair; the Do-Everything Chair.

The Eames Aluminum Group Management Chair is good for the office, the home, and every place in between. They have been used as kitchen table chairs, dining room chairs, side chairs in living rooms and bedrooms, outdoor chairs on covered patios and screened in porches. They have been used as desk chairs, work chairs, boardroom and conference table chairs, as well as corner office chairs. You can see them in waiting rooms, lobbies, hotels, and dozen other public spaces. The chairs are meant for the public; they?re meant to serve, first and foremost, and fulfill their end of the guest-host bargain that Charles and Ray Eames try to strike. They fulfill it brilliantly.

The supple black leather and the polished aluminum that makes up the base and the side ribs of the chair are two great tastes that taste great together. They form to make a cool, totally elegant package that speaks of sophistication, taste, and style. Without the management chair in the aluminum series, the group would suffer from over-categorization. They would have been a bit to specific. But with the management chair you can outfit your home or office with aluminum group chairs no matter what your particular need is. And that?s a big victory in the eyes of the designer of this chair, Charles and Ray Eames.

The Eames Aluminum Group Management Chair is available now from Smart Furniture, as are all the other types of aluminum series chairs. They look great separately, and they can be mixed and matched to look great together. You know it at first glance - it's an Eames design. Timeless, sophisticated, refined. The lithe Aluminum Group chair bears the distinctive stamp of Charles and Ray Eames, the most famous design couple in the world. This graceful silhouette sits equally well in retro interiors, elegant lobbies, or hip young offices. Add executive, management, side, and lounge models, and there's everything you need for a statement of enduring design excellence.

The Aluminum Group initially was designed for Irwin Miller, founder of Cummins Engines, in Columbus, Indiana. Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard designed the Miller home and challenged Charles and Ray Eames to develop a high-quality seating product for outdoor use.

Known for their honest use of materials, the Eameses constructed the chairs with cast aluminum and first conceived of a seat frame to support stretched fabric--a synthetic mesh (woven saran). Although the mesh was discontinued shortly after its introduction, Herman Miller reintroduced a new mesh material for the Aluminum Group in 2001. Called Cygnus, it is similar to the Aeron chair's Pellicle fabric in its aeration and translucent qualities.

The seat-back suspension was a major technical achievement and represented a departure from the concept of the chair as a solid shell.

Wonderfully comfortable, the chairs became the basis for several other Eames designs, including the Soft Pad chairs.
