Product Overview:

Herman Miller Eames Chaise
designed by Charles and Ray Eames

At A Glance:
Eames ChaiseIn 1955, while filming a movie, film director Billy Wilder took a nap. He used a narrow plank held up by sawhorses, so that he wouldn't sleep for too long. It wasn't the most comfy place he'd ever slept, so he asked his good friends Charles and Ray Eames for a narrow office couch. The design they came up with was the Eames Chaise, which allows comfortable naps but doesn't encourage hours of sleep. They gave the first chaise to Wilder, of course, and Herman Miller first produced it in 1968.

What's To Like:
The Eames Chaise is soft, comfortable, and just 18" wide. When you lie on it, you naturally fold your arms over your chest. Should you doze off, your arms soon fall to your sides, waking you up. For that reason, it's a beautiful place to relax for a spell in a study, den, or executive office. Its gently sloping frame puts the body in a naturally relaxed position, with the head and legs slightly raised.

What's Not to Like:
If you're looking for a chaise that will give you a long, uninterrupted rest, the Eames Chaise isn't really going to fulfill your every desire.

The Bottom Line:
The Eames Chaise is soft, comfortable and ultra sleek at just 18" wide. The trim lines of its sculptural frame accommodate 6 base cushions, while 2 additional loose cushions provide support for the back, neck or legs. It's a beautiful place to relax for a spell in a study, den or executive office. Truly a work of art, the chaise features black leather and a sculptural frame and base.

Leather Options:
  • Stock Leather
Chromium free and from Austria this stock Herman Miller leather is a winner for most. With a matte, soft feel this is the most popular leather used on Herman Miller upholstered items.

  • Open Line Leather
Austrian by birth, yours by choice. Open Line leather is closest to the stock Herman Miller leathers but available in a wider array of colors.

  • Dream Cow Leather
With a gentle calfskin grain (it's not calfskin though, its European full grain aniline dyed cowhide), this leather is soft and comes in many great colors to accent your decor. This is a leather of great versatility, perfect when Royal Hide is out of budget, but where the look is wanted.

  • Metallic Dream Cow Leather
A gentle calfskin grain (again, not calfskin but European full grain aniline dyed cowhide), infused with metals and soft shine, on cowhide for huge versatility. Updated, offbeat, moody colors.

  • All Grain Leather
Not too big - not too small - just "All Grain". Color and quality together wedding grain and color, always with a feeling of luxury. European full grain aniline dyed cowhide powered by Crypton, "All Grain" becomes an easy choice for high traffic areas and commercial offices.

  • Royal Hide Leather
This versatile leather is the most beautiful of its kind. The color range is huge, reflecting its broad applicability. It will develop a rich patina over time, making it a great heirloom, eliminating the need for reupholstery. A European full grain aniline dyed cowhide leather with no limits - sky, earth, sea.

The Herman Miller Eames Chaise is also known by the following manufacturer Item Numbers: EA106, EA106.1R10, EA106.1R01.

Design Storyback to top

In 1955 while filming on location, director Billy Wilder discovered he could take quick naps on a plank held up by sawhorses. This prompted Wilder to tell his friends Charles and Ray Eames that he needed a narrow office couch. The Eameses remembered that conversation and in 1968 introduced the Eames chaise, giving the first one to Wilder. It has been produced by Herman Miller ever since.

Comments about Herman Miller Eames Chaise:

This is the most comfortable chaise I have ever used. Not only is the design aesthetically astounding, it is also ergonomically perfect ... unless you are looking for a place to put your arms besides your torso. I use it in my office for reading (though it is so comfortable that I often put my book aside to take a quick nap), and now I am loathe to read anywhere else. It would be equally perfect in a living room for TV viewing. Because of the price, I understand it is not a piece for the casual shopper, but if you are a fan of other Eames' chairs and know how they feel, believe me when I say that this is the most comfortable of all. For me, it was money well spent.
