Herman Miller Eames Molded Plastic Side Chair with Four-Legged Base designed by Charles and Ray Eames
At A Glance: With a clean, simple form sculpted to fit the body, the Molded Plastic Chair with Four-Legged Base was first presented at the Museum of Modern Art in 1948 and was the first plastic chair to be mass produced. The classic Eames molded plastic side chair with 4-leg base remains popular today for cafeterias, home offices, and dining areas. A clean, simple form sculpted to fit the body. Shells are recyclable polypropylene. The shell is dyed throughout so colors remain vibrant even after years of hard use. For extended comfort, the shell is connected to the base and legs by rubber shock mounts.
The current model looks exactly the same as the originals. It remains unupholstered, in keeping with the Eameses requirement that materials be expressed honestly and unselfconsciously. In fact, this was the first one-piece plastic chair to be left uncovered.
What's To Like: While it doesn't have the intricate base that the Eiffel Tower Base version has, this chair can be ganged together easily, and stacks up to 14 high for easy storage. Combine those features with the most stylish colors available in a plastic chair, and the Eames Molded Plastic Chair comes out on top in any conversation about side chairs.
What's Not to Like: If we're being picky, it is possible that those who are taller won't feel as comfortable in this chair as they would in others. If you're not tall, this shouldn't be a concern. It all depends on your body type, but if you're shorter than 5'10" you'll more than likely find the chair comfortable.
The Bottom Line: This is the type of chair you could use at a desk, at a kitchen table, or in the living room. It's beautiful, bold and fun, and the colorful shell is the biggest reason for that.
