Design Storyback to top

Designers Sam Hecht and Kim Colin of Industrial Facility, a design office in London, say they set out to provide ''discovered pleasure in flexibility'' when they created the Enchord desk and mobile cabinet. In other words, ''You become more aware of what it can do as you use it,'' says Hecht.

''We were inspired to design a table that was functional and flexible to match people's lives,'' says Colin, ''yet be simple, understated, and elegant - not overengineered or too dramatic - so it fits in multiple environments.''

Dual-level surfaces provided the solution. They automatically create different zones for different materials - for example, the computer on the upper surface and the printer on the lower. Between the levels is space for storage and wire management. All this without complicating the simple design.

Industrial FacilityHecht and partner Kim Colin formed London-based Industrial Facility in 2002 to "...explore the junction between industrial design and the world around us." Since then, the design firm has contributed its perspective and intellectual rigor to a wide range of international clients like Yamaha, Epson, and Muji. Everything from kitchen appliances to electronics to interior furnishings has benefited from the ideas of Industrial Facility. In keeping with their legacy of partnering with outstanding problem solvers to help people work more efficiently and effectively, Herman Miller engaged Industrial Facility to contribute to its new line of furnishings for home work environments.

Comments about Herman Miller Enchord Mobile Cabinet:

I use this for active work files, tools, and books or binders, which I move between two primary workspaces.

The biggest problem I have with this unit is that the file box is not functional if you keep it in the unit. The handles for the file box are inaccessible from outside the unit (they are not on the sides with oak paneling), and if you try to pull or lift the file box from the oak paneled side, your hand grabs and lifts the file rod, disturbing the files. If you use the file box independently of the unit, the advantage of a mobile work unit is compromised.

The unit also arrived scratched, but I noticed this only after I rearranged the components.

I rated it as difficult to install, because of the tiny screws used to attach the casters, and the inefficient wrench provided. The wrench also did not fit quite properly, making it still more difficult to use.
