Herman Miller Goetz Sofa
designed by Mark Goetz
At A Glance:
The traditional sofa is a wooden frame covered with padding and upholstery. Designer Mark Goetz turned that tradition inside out, wrapping his sofa in a striking molded wood veneer shell to create both a structural frame and a dramatic profile. The Herman Miller Goetz Sofa's shell is filled with 7" thick padding and leather upholstery, to create a seat pocket specially designed to provide a comfortable seated position as well as enough space to stretch out and take a nap.

What's To Like:
You'll love the spacious resting place provided. The Goetz Sofa is a true napping sofa - not just one that has "enough room." Its whole design is aimed at making you extremely comfortable whether you're sitting or lying down. That, and the sofa's sumptuous leather and fine veneer are just the visual icing on the cake.
What's Not to Like:
Well, it goes without saying that the Goetz Sofa is one of the more expensive sofas you could buy - so you do have other options. But, you get what you pay for; this sofa oozes comfort and luxurious style. We promise you won't feel let down when you sit on it in your very own living room for the first time.
The Bottom Line:

Materials & MeasurementsMaterials:
Traditional sofa construction consists of a wooden frame with padding and upholstery applied over it. Mark Goetz turned that tradition inside out with this sofa. Its molded veneer shell is clearly visible as both aesthetic element and structural frame.
To achieve this look, Goetz incorporated an intricate miter that eliminates all but one seam where several planes intersect. Veneers wrap around the sofa's sides and back for a dramatic profile. 7" thick cushions and a seat depth that gives correct ergonomic support provide comfort. The result is a sofa appropriate for today's lifestyles that echoes Herman Miller's classic heritage.

People feel close to their furniture. They get attached. "So my goal is to design furniture that fits into someone's life," Mark Goetz says. "I want even office furniture to feel as personal as any object someone has at home." Of course, furniture must solve a problem, Goetz says, but that's only half of the designer's mission. "You could live with a good solution and not really like it. Objects should be loved and wanted as well as provide a solution."
Goetz has been designing loved and wanted objects since 1986, after his graduation from the Pratt Institute in New York City. In 1988, he founded TZ Design in New York and has created children's products for Marimekko, backpacks and totebags for Le Sportsac, table top items for Crate & Barrel, and crystal for Steuben. He also has designed a variety of products for the contract furniture industry, including tables, casegoods, and more than 60 chairs. His pieces furnish the corporate headquarters of the Chicago Bulls, the Kennedy Center in Washington, and the president's office at Harvard University.
Molded plywood carries an immediate association with classic Herman Miller designs, and Mark Goetz, principal of TZ Design in New York City, skillfully and creatively incorporates this material in his sofa design. While traditional construction consists of a wooden frame with padding and upholstery applied over it, the Goetz sofa turns tradition inside out, since its plywood shell is clearly visible as both an aesthetic element and a structural frame.
The sofa's practicality extends to one of its most important features - comfort. Goetz conducted his own research and consulted with other experts to arrive at a seat depth that gives ergonomic support as well as room to lie down.
