Nelson Small End Table by Herman Miller 21.5" High x 17" Diameter Top designed by George Nelson
At A Glance: As with many of the pieces designed by the iconic George Nelson, his signature end table is characterized by clean lines and practicality. The round end table is a spot for flowers, a small lamp, a phone, an alarm clock or a coffee mug. First produced in 1954, the clean, graceful lines of the pedestal and legs are typical of Nelson design. He had a penchant for bringing grace to materials that didn't have a graceful reputation, and the metal base looks almost organic as it rises from the floor. This version of his End Table is 21.5" h x 17" diameter.
What's To Like: The Nelson End Table is beautifully balanced, with an alluring sweep of the legs into the post, and tastefully formed top. As an end table, it brings art to an oft-overlooked piece of furniture.
What's Not to Like: It would be nice if the top came with a natural wood finish option.
The Bottom Line: The Nelson End Table continues just as it began - as one of the most artistic pieces in Herman Miller's modern classics collection. George Nelson was a master of his craft, and his end table shows up in many a well-decorated home. It's a good way to add beauty to your living space.

George Nelson When writing about the course of his remarkable 50-year career, George Nelson described a series of creative "zaps"--moments of out-of-the-blue inspiration "when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of." It was these zaps that would lead to the creation of some of the most original furniture designs of the 20th century- including the Coconut Chair, the Marshmallow Sofa, and the Nelson End Table.
An early zap came in the 1930s, when he was an architectural student in Rome. Before returning home, an idea struck him: He would travel Europe and interview leading modern architects, hoping to get the articles published in the U.S. He succeeded, and in the process introduced the U.S. design community to the European avant-garde. This set in motion a sequence of what he called "lucky" career breaks that were really the inevitable outcomes of his brilliance as a designer, teacher, and author.
