The creative insight of Ron Arad combined with the technological expertise of Kartell comes together in the Bookworm- the industrial bookshelf that snakes its way across your wall. This flexible bookshelf assumes any desired shape without compromising toughness or functionality. Unlimited shapes can be formed, limited only by personal creativity. Bookends can be placed on either side of the wall shelf, allowing you to create circular patterns that display books at every turn.
Bookworm comes in 3 different sizes. The small size is shown here with 7 bookends (per each shelf). Kartell advises that users wall-mount this shelf in a curved shape to keep the materials in tension and to increase resistance once loaded. Each space between the bookends supports up to 20 pounds.
Ron Arad Born in Tel Aviv in 1951, Ron Arad studied at the Jerusalem Academy of Art from 1971 - 1973, before moving to London, where he studied at the Architectural Association from 1974 - 1979. In 1994, he established the 'Ron Arad Studio', design and production unit in Como, Italy. His London studio has increasingly produced individual pieces made of sheet steel, and he always mischievously exploits their formal and functional possibilities to the fullest. The sculptural forms often have an unexpected impact which first emerges during use, and are just as much a result of graphic design as the experimental work that goes on in the workshop. Arad's work has been widely featured in many design/architectural books and magazines world-wide. He has exhibited at many major museums and galleries throughout the world and his work is in many public collections including, among others, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and The Vitra Design Museum, Germany.
If you're looking for a bookshelf to hold a large number of books, the Kartell Bookworm may not be for you, though the number of books it holds depends on how it's installed. There are a number of design/installation choices, and each choice determines the functionality of the bookshelf. I went for a more decorative approach (a lowercase, cursive e), and it holds well over 50 paperbacks with ease without losing any aesthetic appeal. Everyone who comes into my office compliments the Kartell Bookworm, and its quirky appearance and adaptable function never cease to please me. I must add that installation was not easy. Thankfully, the professionals from Smart Furniture were on hand to take care of the intensive process (it is not a one-person job). The result, however, is a bookcase that is beyond sturdy.
Contrary to the common idea, products in plastic materials are highly ecological for the reason that they can be recycled (with the exception of polyurethane, little used in Kartell products). Thus, Kartell products can be easily recycled. In order to simplify the recycling process, the various components of Kartell products can be easily separated and reduced to elements made of one single material. Moreover, the plastic parts of each product carry, clearly printed, an identification mark to determine the correct classification of the different kinds of plastic and their effective recycling.
Creativity and technology, glamour and functionality, quality and innovation: a combination of extraordinary factors together with a strategic vision of distribution has contributed to the lasting success of Kartell. By cultural and entrepreneurial choice, since its origins in 1949 the Italian manufacturer has chosen to characterize itself as the market leader in the production of designers articles which use technology and plastic materials. This choice requires a great understanding of materials and transformation technology. A leader in furniture design, Kartell addresses an international audience with a collection unique in originality, variety, size, and range.
