Leap WorkLounge
by Steelcase
designed by Steelcase Design Studio in conjunction with IDEO

Steelcase Leap WorkLounge
At A Glance:
Combining the exceptional comfort found on the Leap chair with rich materials and elegant design, the WorkLounge is the ideal seating option for when you want to think, concentrate, work or relax. Match it with the multi-purpose ottoman* that moonlights as a work table and you've got yourself an extremely comfortable place to lounge and work, all at the same time.

What's To Like:
Standard features include your choice of high-quality Elmo Soft Leather, polished aluminum base and back frame, 5-point glides, height-adjustable seat, extra cushioned headrest with flip-up pillow, and generously upholstered arms for added comfort. That's a whole lot of comfort all in one place.

What's Not to Like:
The starting price on this chair is almost $3000, which is pretty steep. You can get a lot of great lounge chairs with some of the same features for a lot less dough. But will they have all the adjustable features of the WorkLounge? It's your call - Steelcase obviously knows this chair's worth a good bit of money.

The Bottom Line:
If the Leap WorkLounge were a pop song, it would be Outkast's "The Way You Move." The price tag isn't pretty, but the chair is, and the ergonomics of the back and seat are hard to beat. This is high quality in an office chair.

Options include the multi-use ottoman* and hard floor or carpet casters for additional mobility.

Best office chair I have ever sat in

By Robert Ti.

Comments about Steelcase Leap WorkLounge:

Bought the chair and the matching ottoman for my home office. And what a wonderful office chair it is: extremely comfy, superb quality and the leather is smooth as a glove. Design of the chair reminds me of Eames chair by Herman Miller, which I like.
It was a pleasure working with Smart Furniture and in particular with Caroline Allen. They/she delivered everything they promised and did not even charge my credit card account until shortly before the chair shipped - very much unlike other internet dealers who charge right away albeit months long lead times. Should I ever need something else Smart Furniture carries, they will be my first choice vendor - keep up the good work, Caroline and team!

Quality Worth the Cost

Comments about Steelcase Leap WorkLounge:

After having owned this chair for just over a month, I have no problem with its cost. I've used an Aeron and Think for an extended period and feel this chair is of superior construction and comfort.

The seat is well padded, but firm. I sink no more than half an inch and feel strongly supported. There is a slight bucket design to the seat due to how the leather sewn. There is significantly less padding on the backrest and I think it would do well with a little more.

The chair comes with removable lumbar and headrest pillows (the headrest pillow is removable by flipping it behind the headrest). I prefer removing both pillows when sitting upright, however they feel wonderful when reclined.

This chair provides 4 adjustment mechanisms: seat height, back stops, upper back force, and lower back firmness. Upper back force and lower back firmness deserve explanation.

Upper back force adjusts the pressure needed to recline. It's controlled by analog knob with a good textured feel, making the effect of quarter twist predictable and easily detected. It also has good range that will suit all but the most eccentric of demands.

It's important to note that this setting does not change how the backrest pushes against you. The best way to describe its actuation is it reclines when you push against it, when in a reclined position it feels fixed, and when lift your back off it slowly and smoothly inclines to its upright state.

Lower back firmness controls lumbar pressure. More accurately, it adjusts a constant light pressure up and down the spine. The stepping of this discrete knob is too fine and usually requires a few clicks before I can feel any change. I also find there is a dead zone on both ends of the dial where many adjustment clicks amount to no discernible change in where I feel pressure. Lastly, the optimal setting for this dial is considerably different depending on whether or not you decide to use the lumbar pillow. This wouldn't be a problem if the lower back firmness was easily adjustable. For users like me who switch between upright and reclined positions with and without pillows, this is a minor frustration.

There are two more things to note:

The arm rests are quite low. I rather like this feature because they are of perfect height for reading when reclined, but it will certainly bear nuisance for some; especially those who prefer using rests for typing (with a standard height desk, it's impossible).

The quality of the leather far surpassed my expectations. Due to its softness, I'm slightly concerned with how the arm rests will hold up under excessive use.

Service and delivery comments:

My chair shipped from Steelcase with a broken caster. Smart Furniture took care of it almost immediately. I sent an email at 9:30 PM and got a response around 11:00 PM saying new casters will be shipped ASAP. Unfortunately, it took 2 or 3 weeks to receive the replacement casters due to the sloth of Steelcase. I am very pleased with my interactions with Smart Furniture. I don't think you can't truly rate customer service until you need to use for something beyond the ordinary; I did and Smart Furniture was great.

  • Q:

How does the Leap WorkLounge compare to the standard Leap and/or Freedom? I know this is quite a subjective question, but I can't find the WorkLounge at a retail store and I'm hesitant to buy this chair untested. From the pictures, the WorkLounge looks to have more padding and non-adjustable arms (if this is the case, do they protrude and possibly interfere with a standard height desk - it appears that this chair is never pictured at a desk, is this not its intended environment?)

      A:

The Leap WorkLounge is very different from the standard office chair. It is made to be used as a lounge chair. You can purchase the ottoman for this chair that can double as a work surface, so this chair could be a break from your desk. This chair is fully upholstered, where office chairs mostly have plastic backs and many more adjustments for sitting at your desk all day. Please e-mail sales@smartfurniture.com with any questions you may have about this great chair.
