Product Overview:

MR Side Chair
designed by Mies van der Rohe
from Knoll

At A Glance:
Tulip ChairThe MR Side Chair is a variation of the famed MR Chaise Lounge and MR Lounge Chair. Smaller in scale and with less material, the MR Side Chair retains the essential design of the other chairs in the series. Constructed of tubular steel fashioned into a cantilevered support system, and featuring wide leather straps as the back and seat, the MR Side Chair betrays van der Rohe's inspiration - the iconic Wassily Chair by his fellow German Marcel Breuer. Designed in 1927 as part of the Weissenhof exhibit in Stuttgart, Germany.

What's To Like:

  • Designed by Mies van der Rohe. Is that plain enough?
  • Simplicity of form and material uses nothing extra - and leaves nothing wanting.
  • Comes both armless and with arms - which makes it a great choice for the formal modern dinner table.

What's Not to Like:

  • The MR Side Chair is a modern classic - and its price shows it.
  • If you like more traditionally shaped chairs, this chair isn't your best bet.
  • If you have small children, it would probably be a good idea to wait until they're older. Either that, or just give in to the abuse the chair's leather seat will suffer at the hands of the little ones.

The Bottom Line:
Art Deco, as refined in the Bauhaus, is embodied in the classic MR Side Chair. There's no better example of the seamless reconciliation of the Arts and machine production.

Features:

  • Overall dimensions: 31" h x 21" w x 32.5" d
  • Seat height: 18"
  • Arm height: 27"
  • Frame is seamless tubular stainless steel with a polished finish
  • Seat and back are thick leather slings with leather laces

Mies van der RhoeLudwig Mies van der Rohe is one of the most significant designers of the modern era. Born in Germany in 1886, van der Rohe began a career in architecture and interior in an era that challenged traditional concepts of aesthetics and design. Rejected classical, cluttered notions of beauty, he was a proponent of clean, efficient lines expressed using industrial materials. This design movement gained ground after World War I, but Mies van der Rohe was forced to move to the United States in 1937 due to political pressure from the Nazis, who rejected his new ideas on art and architecture. He took a position as head of architecture in Chicago at the Armour Institute of Technology, now known as the Illinois Institute of Technology. His career in the United States spanned 30 years and saw him create numerous standout buildings in the Chicago area. He is perhaps best remembered today for his inspiring furniture designs.
