At A Glance: The MR Table is a complementary piece to the famed MR Side Chair. With imitation of form, the MR Table retains the essential design of the MR series. Constructed of tubular steel fashioned into an X-shaped base and featuring a glass top, the MR Table was designed in 1927 as part of the Weissenhof exhibit in Stuttgart, Germany.
What's To Like:
Designed by Mies van der Rohe. Is that clear enough?
Simplicity of form and material uses nothing extra - and leaves nothing wanting.
Comes both armless and with arms - which makes it a great choice for the formal modern dinner table.
What's Not to Like:
The MR Side Chair is a modern classic - and its price shows it.
If you like more traditionally shaped chairs, this chair isn't your best bet.
If you have small children, it would probably be a good idea to wait until they're older. Either that, or just give in to the abuse the chair's leather seat will suffer at the hands of the little ones.
The Bottom Line: A study in geometry and a first lesson of many in elevating industrial design to the level of art, the MR Table is justly famous. Handsome, cool, constructed of glass and tubular steel, the MR Table is a perfect complement to any piece of modern furniture - a sleek and handsome addition to any room and a genuine work of art.
Features:
Overall dimensions: 20.8" h x 28.5" diameter
Frame is seamless tubular stainless steel with a mirror finish
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Without question, one of the most significant designers of the modern era. Born in Germany in 1886, van der Rohe began a career in architecture and interior in an era that challenged traditional concepts of aesthetics and design. Rejected classical, cluttered notions of beauty, he was a proponent of clean, efficient lines expressed using industrial materials. This design movement gained ground after World War I, but Mies van der Rohe was forced to move to the United States in 1937 due to political pressure from the Nazis, who rejected his new ideas on art and architecture.
He took a position as head of architecture in Chicago at the Armour Institute of Technology, now known as the Illinois Institute of Technology. His career in the United States spanned 30 years and saw him create numerous standout buildings in the Chicago area. He is perhaps best remembered today for his inspiring furniture designs.
