The Herman Miller Mirra Chair designed by Studio 7.5
At A Glance: The Mirra Chair can be seen as the chair that went past Aeron; the next step in the ergonomic chair industry. It uses some of the same design features, including a porous seat and seat back, but it adds functionality and takes off some of the rough edges. The size of the chair makes it great for women and people with smaller statures.
What's To Like: This is a very comfortable chair, brimming with advanced ergonomic engineering, adjustments, and surfaces. And it retains much of the iconic look of the Aeron Chair, making it a competitor in terms of style as well. Chairs, chairs, stop fighting! There's room enough for both of you.
What's Not to Like: The downside of trying to advance the Aeron Chair is that sometimes you can be derivative. The shape of the Mirra Chair isn't particularly unique, and for some buyers that's a problem. If you're a bigger person, this chair might also not be for you - it's slightly on the small side.
The Bottom Line: The Mirra Chair is great for the office, great for medium to small statures, and great for the health and happiness of your body. It's not an earth shaker, but it's a money maker.
Winner of several awards for design excellence, including the 2003 GOODDESIGN Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Design and Architecture, the Best of NeoCon Gold Award, Silver at the Industrial Design Society of America's Industrial Design Excellence Awards, and the FIRA Ergonomic Excellence Award, it blew away the ergonomic and aesthetic community upon release. The seat, back, arms, and other ergonomic features of the chair are highly customizable; there are over 250,000 variations of the Mirra Chair through the personalization options above.
Constructed of elastic, pliable materials, the Mirra chair is also the most adaptable chair out there. It fits any size like a glove, intuitively molding itself to support and comfort your contours, weight distribution, and height. Mirra comes equipped with the patented PostureFit back support system made famous by the Aeron chair, as well as AirWeave seating and the TriFlex back support system. Mirra should easily fit any user without having to be manually adjusted, but of course, Herman Miller has made sure his chair is as adaptable as possible.
Users can adjust the seat height, seat depth, tilt tension, tilt limiter, forward tilt, arm height, arm width, arm angle, and lumbar support. There aren't any chairs out there that will fit you better than the Mirra. In addition, there are few chairs out there that you can more easily make your own.
Smart Furniture Employee Review I finally get to review a chair. Woo hoo! I only hope I will be objective, yet critical, and most of all helpful if you are looking to purchase an office chair. This particular Mirra Chair has fully adjustable arms, lumbar support, flex front seat edge, tilt limiter and the upholstered back. All I am missing is the seat angle adjustment and the fire retardant fabric upgrade. I don't smoke, so hopefully my office-mate's candle burning will not catch my Mirra chair on fire.
I usually adjust the height first, putting everything as low as it can go, as I have a desk 28.5" high. Most desks are 29" - 30.5" in height. Once I get that right, I play with the seat depth. It says "your thighs should be comfortably supported and the front edge of the seat should not press against the back of your legs." No matter which setting I use the above is true. So I put it in the middle somewhere. Read more...
The Herman Miller Mirra Chair is also known by the following manufacturer Item Numbers: MR1, MR2, MR121PFM, MR221PFM, MR121AFM, MR221AFM, MR122AAM, MR222AAM, MR122AAF, MR222AAF, MR123AAM, MR223AAM, MR123AAF, MR223AAF.
TriFlex Backrest This is a new innovation designed to support the back in a multitude of ways; lumbar, lower spine, shoulders. These are all crucially important areas when it comes to long hours at a desk or computer. Without proper support in all of them, the quality of your seating experience goes down, which in turn effects your work, mood, and health. The TriFlex system in the Mirra chair is designed to make sure that doesn't happen, and to make sure you can sustain the quality of your health and work experience for long periods of sitting. Working in conjunction with the flexible, breathable material forming the back of the chair, the TriFlex keeps you as comfortable, and your back and spine as healthy, as possible. And, true to form, all of this happens intuitively with the Mirra chair - no adjustments necessary. The lack of reliance on personal adjustments (which can, of course, still be made) is something that really sets the Mirra apart; it allows for professional, medical, technical adjustment, rather than just personal.
Passive PostureFit Herman Miller designed the PostureFit system for the Aeron chair, their breakthrough product in ergonomic design. But for the Mirra chair they did Aeron one better, developing the Passive PostureFit. The new version is designed to support your lower spine, the part of your back below the belt, and to do it without forcing you into an uncomfortable or unsustainable position. Research has shown that most office workers sit forward in their seat when the work, slouching. Mirra's Passive PostureFit doesn't correct this posture as much as it makes it easy and healthy to maintain. Camber contour at the base of the back makes it comfortable and natural to assume your normal position at work, and at the same time relieves all the stress and unhealthy alignments and tensions from your back. So the Mirra has accomplished the dream of every teenager; healthy, comfortable, posture-maintaining slouching. The engineering behind this design feature is deeply impressive, as well as truly creative; not to eliminate bad posture by making it uncomfortable and therefore untenable, as many office chairs do, but cradle and support bad posture (which, as research shows, is actually normal posture) and convert in into comfortable, non-damaging seating. Neat trick.
Harmonic Tilt Harmonic tilt uses advanced seat and spring technology to create the most comfortable and easy tilting and reclining possible. This is an under-researched and under-estimated aspect of office seating. Users of office chairs spend large portions of their time leaning, swiveling, and reclining, in several different positions and at many different stress levels. The ultimate office chair would address this little-discussed aspect of seating, and therefore improve vastly the enjoyment and comfort of the office chair. The designers and engineers behind the Mirra chair resolved to do this, and they did it in an unconventional, innovative way (no surprises there!). Mirra is designed to provide the same tension and pull when it comes to leaning in the seat no matter what type or size of user is in the seat. The ensures that the user is always in complete control of the seat. In a word, it creates harmony between the user, their desire to recline or lean, and the chair. So, rather than attempt to make the chair super-fluid or have myriad adjustments to the recline function, Mirra just made it simple, easy, and comfortable for everyone. Harmonic tilt is the unexpected answer to a little-asked question in the world of office chair design, and it improves the function and ergonomic rating of the Mirra chair immeasurably.
AirWeave Suspension The seat on the Mirra chair is designed with comfort, breathability and coolness in mind. AirWeave allows air to flow through the Mirra chair, reaching the user and keeping them cool, collected, productive. The seat also has a fixed depth, at 17", which means there's never a gap between the seat and the back of the chair, keeping you comfortable and supported. It's natural, because it's yet another paradox, for the last major design feature of the Mirra to somewhat contradict the high-tech, engineering-focused features that came before. One of the best innovations used in the chair is one of the simplest, and most obvious; just make the seat breathable! Mirra is an elegant chair with a lovely aesthetic that both serve as packaging around a highly technical and complex series of engineering achievements.
When considering what to look for in an office chair, a lot of things come to mind. For many customers, comfort is the number one priority. For others, good ergonomic back support is the most important thing. And, for still others, the price tag is the preeminent measure of which chair to buy. One aspect of office chair buying that is sometimes overlooked, however, is who actually makes the product. While the Mirra Chair was commissioned, produced and marketed by Herman Miller, it is Studio 7.5 who actually designed and built the chair for commercial sale and reproduction. And there are few furniture makers on earth more worthy of your trust and admiration than Studio 7.5.
Studio 7.5 is a German company dedicated to freedom of movement and design. They made the Mirra Chair in that same spirit; as a product marked by many fingerprints, suited for many purposes, many offices, and many rooms. Adaptability and well-tuned adjustment capability is one of the main qualities the finished Mirra Chair possesses, aside from exquisite comfort and unflinching support. Studio 7.5 isn't like most firms, and the chair they produced isn't like most chairs. The Herman Miller Mirra Chair is a new thing in the world, an office chair with the distinctive looks of the Aeron, the comfort of the Embody, and the adjustment capability of an Amia. It's not a Frankenstein by any means, however; it has the beauty of Generation Chair to boot. You can read more about the Mirra Chair's design story. The process that led to the creation of the chair was profound and profoundly interesting. At Studio 7.5, things are run very differently from a typical America business. They were committed not only to the idea of the chair, of the product, but also to the idea of their unique company. So committed, in fact, that they have no bosses, no owners, no employees. They're a collective of innovative designers who's original business plan was to buy a 7.5 ton truck and move their studio from place to place: thus the name.
Of course, the truck thing never really came to pass; they were too successful, too in demand, and too in need of freedom and space to work their magic on industrial design items. The Mirra Chair, while one of their finest pieces of work, is far from their only work. They have a long track record of success in creating beautiful, useful, innovative products for an international market. They are a company to be trusted when it comes to utility, aesthetic quality, and innovation. The Mirra Chair, and Studio 7.5, are entities both Herman Miller and Smart Furniture can stand behind with pride and complete trust.
So who is Studio 7.5? If there are no bosses and no owners, who makes the products? Who designs them and runs the business.
Burkhard Schmitz, Claudia Plikat, and Carola Zwick were the original members of the team, later joined by Roland Zwick. All of them had backgrounds in industrial design, and long resumes full of success, beauty, and excellent functionality. When asked about the Mirra Chair, one of their latest and greatest productions, they brighten, and can speak in depth and with intense detail about the chair. About the Mirra chair: "We define not only how the chair looks but how it performs," says Carola. "We're very involved with its physical behavior, because beauty is not only what you see, it's also what you feel." This is the philosophy that led to the paradox designs of less material and more support, less adjustments and a better fit, and high value at low cost. It also led to one of the most innovative chairs this decade, and in more ways than one. Studio 7.5 blended scientific research, ergonomic study and fashion-forward aesthetics to forge a signature chair: the Mirra.
So. Of course, when you're making a purchase on a new office chair, comfort, support, ergonomics, beauty and pedigree should be at the forefront of your mind. But don't forget to consider the actual makers of the product. The companies, sensibilities, and physical hands that built the chair. In the case of the Herman Miller Mirra Chair, built by German Studio 7.5, thinking about the designers can only improve your opinion of the chair you're looking at. Because in their capable and creative hands, Herman Miller was able to produce yet another wondrous, innovative, and even revolutionary office chair for the day to day life of working folks. With Studio 7.5, you know what you're buying; quality, hard work, beauty, and plenty of good old fashioned comfort, support, and functionality.

First Impressions The Herman Miller Mirra Chair looks similar to the earlier, and era-defining, Aeron Chair. Of course, it's not the first or last of the modern office chairs to bear a resemblance to Aeron, but it is one of the first to assimilate the innovative stylization and groundbreaking design without become a copy. The Mirra Chair is it's own piece of furniture history, a unique and valuable step forward in the world or ergonomics, features, comfort, and style. It's a chair built to fit the human body, keep it cool and supported and comfortable, and it's very successful. The design of the chair, dreamed up and executed by the German Studio 7.5, maintains a complicated paradox; a more-is-more attitude toward features and innovation combined with a less-is-more aesthetic and reliance on material. Mirra is a very well executed chair, and Herman Miller can rightly be proud of it's clear steps forward from the grandaddy of them all, the Aeron. Nearly everything about the Mirra Chair is adjustable and customizable, especially if you make use of Smart Furniture's Smart Designer tool, and the result is a very comfortable chair that can be made even more precisely comfortable, supportive and tailored by your own hand.
The X Factor This one has two. That cool looking AirWeave suspension seat, which has heft and surface area but no weight or wasted material. Very cool. But even more attractive, this is an incredibly high value chair. It has all the comfort and support you could ask from from an office chair, but it costs $128 less than the Aeron and $600 less than the Embody, it's main competitors.
The Bottom Line You won't find a better chair than the Mirra Chair for work and office. Highly recommended. Beyond recommended; urged.
Other Comments The Mirra can be compared to the Aeron when it comes to the overall shape and "transparent" aesthetic, and for some that might be an unattractive feature, but it's a very different and very unique piece of furniture.

The plastic back on the Mirra is very irritating on my shoulder blades. This is a very uncomfortable and distracting problem for me, as the tips of my shoulder blades are constantly grinding into the hard plastic backrest. I've had to drape towels over the backrest to relieve my sore shoulder blade tips.
I'm 5'6", 125 lbs. The middle of the seat pan is pretty comfortable, but if I sit properly in the chair (with my lower back in full contact with the lumbar & backrest) my butt is no longer in the comfy center of the seat pan; it's near the back edge, where the mesh is less forgiving. After 2 or 3 hours I feel distinct pressure points on my butt. As a programmer it's imperative I be able to concentrate for at least 4-6 hours at a time. The pressure points on my butt and shoulder blades constantly force me to stop what I'm doing and address my comfort level. It is precisely the opposite of what was supposed to happen when I bought the chair!
I gave the Mirra 3 weeks to see if I could either adjust my way out of or simply get used to the discomfort, but it didn't happen. I fidget a lot in this chair and find I'm constantly trying to locate some elusive sweet spot of comfort. Meanwhile, its aesthetics have been compromised by bath towels and a foam pad, negating the fact I waited weeks to receive a custom colored chair :\
There are parts about the Mirra I do like. The Mirra is clearly superior to any given sub-$100 task chair. The lumbar support feels absolutely amazing on my lower back. The chair feels very solid & well constructed. The seat pan and backrest recline well in duet, and you can really fine tune it. I like how it looks (when it's not covered in towels and pads), and I have no doubt what so ever that the Mirra would have lasted a long time (and been well worth the money) if not for the inexplicable disregard for comfort.
The engineering hype re: ergonomics seems true on a technical level, as my lower back feels great in this chair. But at this price point I expect both ergonomics *and* comfort. I really don't see what my IT peers love so much about this chair, as the Mirra just doesn't deliver for me. Unfortunately I'm going to have to return this for something - anything - with proper padding.

Comments about Herman Miller Mirra Chair:
I'm 4 weeks post-op from an extensive spinal fusion and finding a good office chair before I went back to work was important to me. After much research, I decided on this Mirra with multiple options. Delivery was made in 2 days! Assembly was a breeze. After sitting in it for a straight 45 minutes (way more than I will when I get back to work without getting up for some reason!), my back didn't hurt at all. This is HUGE! I'm very pleased with the Mirra and even more pleased with Smart Furniture. Love the "name your price" option! :)

Comments about Herman Miller Mirra Chair:
I work at home and am on the phone / computer for hours at a time. I was developing sore neck and shoulder muscles from using an improper desk chair. Where as I wouldn't have normally spent this much money on a desk chair, the features won me over. I'm so glad that I spent the research time and the money for this chair. My shoulder and neck are healing. I'm able to sit without getting kinked muscles for hours at a time. This is a good value for the dollars.

Comments about Herman Miller Mirra Chair:
I enjoyed an Aeron chair for about 8 years. For the past year or so, I found it was feeling less and less comfortable for long periods of time, so I decided to switch to a Mirra chair. Boy am I glad I did. It's a personal preference, but the Mirra chair is much more comfortable for sitting at a desk using a computer. There's something about the firmer back and stronger lumbar support that makes the chair more comfortable for longer uses. Highly recommended.

Service and delivery comments:
Karen was a joy to work with in purchasing the Mirra chair for my husband's birthday. The shipping company phones and set a delivery time (three hour window), they were prompt and showed up around the two hour mark. The chair arrived in perfectly assembled. When my husband had questions about one of the features of the chair that was not ordered Karen said we could ship it back and that Smartfurniture would arrange the shipment. But, in the end my husband realized he didn't need the feature and have been extreamly happy with his gift.

This chair is great. My previous chair encouraged me to slouch, whereas this chair encourages me to sit up straight. It's comfortable and breathes nicely. It is aesthetically pleasing. Very happy with the purchase. Assembly is also quite easy.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the fact that there is probably a better chair out there, but it probably costs more than I'm willing to pay. After the hours of reading/research on this chair, I think the Mirra is best-in-class.

I wouldn't trade my Mirra Chair for any other. It has provided me with years of comfort and support and I love all of the adjustments and available options (and colors). I highly recommend getting this chair with adjustable arms, because there are times when I'll want to raise them up or move them down, and the tilt limiter is also key. Sometimes I don't want to recline all the way back. Another clever part of the design is the adjustable seat depth – I'm not very tall and it's nice to have the front folded down so it doesn't hit my legs. This chair fits me perfectly.

Comments about Herman Miller Mirra Chair:
I had a knockoff, low quality chair prior to purchasing the Mirra Chair. Now that I've sat in it for over a month, I wish I had made the investment sooner! My upper back pain has completely gone away, I have better posture, and I've adjusted the Mirra to fit me perfectly. (I'm 5'1" and was able to adjust the chair height, lumbar support and arms just the way I want them.) I will say it was worth the extra cost to have the Tilt Limiter.
If you were like me and are unsure of what features to add, I recommend watching some of Smart Furniture's YouTube videos on the Mirra Chair and calling them. Melanie walked me through each feature (for example - explained I don't need the Flex Front Adj Seat because of my height).

Comments about Herman Miller Mirra Chair:
As a long time Aeron chair owner for both my work and home offices, I was hesitant to go with the Mirra. Smart Furniture's extraordinary return policy is the reason that I gambled on this chair, and I'm very glad I did. I find it more comfortable than that Aeron, and for someone that sits in front of a computer for extended periods, this chair is ideal.
Service and delivery comments:
Smart Furniture is THE place to buy your chair - hand's down the best. I also opted to have my chair assembled, so that it was a "turn key" shipment. Open the well packaged chair, and you're ready to go.

Comments about Herman Miller Mirra Chair:
My back is fickle: it's mostly fine except when it's not... then my back is one heck of a problem. Bad office chairs have caused back issues for me. I work long hours in front of a computer and have gone through several office store brand chairs over the years, none of them really suited me since I could never find the right adjustments for them.
The Mirra Chair is close to perfect. My minor complaint is that this chair is VERY FIRM since it has little or no padding on the chair. To be comfortable in this chair, you have to completely/properly sit in it. Once there, you can sit for hours and you will not notice the lack of padding. No complaints from my back, either.
You cannot perch on the edge of the seat because it will eventually be uncomfortable.
I purchased the Mirra with adjustable arms, lumbar support, and seat tilt mechanism. All these adjustments have been great for my back. After three weeks of ownership, I enjoy using my chair.
This chair is perfect for small to medium build women because the seat is not longer than my thigh, as I found in some store brand executive chairs (built for tall and larger men, I'm sure).
I have a small office and the mesh back is perfect: the chair blends well and looks great.

Office desk chair
Comments about Herman Miller Mirra Chair:
Since college, I had been using a bargain-basement office chair that I bought at Staples. It had very few adjustments that could be made for comfort. Sitting in it did not promote proper posture in any way.
The Mirra has lots of ways you can tweak the chair to fit your body. Plus, it's just plain comfortable to sit on.
It costs a lot of money, but if you sit in a chair all day long, you owe it to yourself to be sitting in a chair that will maximize your comfort. Don't skimp on your long term health and well being.
Service and delivery comments:
Delivery was prompt, and the product arrived in good condition.

Comments about Herman Miller Mirra Chair:
Love this chair. I suffer from degenerative disk disease, and needed a chair I can sit at for longer periods of time. I am so glad I got the forward-tilt add-on with this chair, as I use it all the time. It helps keep my spine aligned better than the standard flat seat.

Comments about Herman Miller Mirra Chair:
I had a Mirra chair at the office and never noticed how comfortable and ergonomic it was until I started working from home. My chair (just a regular office chair) at home would hurt my back and I wasn't able to sit in for long which meant I could only work for short periods of time before I needed to lay down and ease the back pain. I decided to invest in the Mirra after returning to the office for a one day meeting and noticed how at the end of the day, I felt like I hadn't been sitting down for 8 hours straight - my back did not hurt one bit. This is easily the best money I have ever spent. It is worth every penny.

Comments about Herman Miller Mirra Chair:
I have bought the usual desk chairs at the local shops but I plan to work from home in the future and wanted a comfortable chair if I was to be spending hours at the computer. This chairs rolls so much better - it is amazing that a simple thing like that is way better with this design. The lumbar support is so comfortable. I love the citron green color I rewarded myself with. This is like the Cadillac of chairs and yes, worth the extra expense. When ordering the chair, I didn't know what features I really needed [...] I felt comfortable then ordering the chair plus they offered my money back if I wasn't totally happy. I paid to have it put together [...]

Comments about Herman Miller Mirra Chair:
This is an excellent office chair. I can sit in it for hours at the computer without getting any aches. The construction is high-quality and is very sturdy. The armrests have some play to them but seem to be well connected (perhaps this was my fault when assembling the chair). I would recommend this chair to anyone looking for a good office or task chair.

Comments about Herman Miller Mirra Chair:
I have been using my Mirra chair for 4 months now. I work from home and I sit in this chair for at least 8 hours a day. I don't get back pain anymore, I don't squirm around looking for a comfy position to sit in in this chair.
The back is hard and yet also slightly flexi (very comfy) and the seat is just lovely, the mesh supports very well and yet I never get the dreaded dead butt feeling..it is perfect the way it takes the pressure off and yet is very firm.
Love that I can adjust the depth of the seat as well so I have never had the Mirra digging into the back of my legs...and all the arm adjustments.
If I had to describe this chair in one word: Perfect!
Service and delivery comments:
Smart Furniture were awesome, so many personalizing choices on their website, great price, quick shipping, came fully assembled.
When the chair came, one of the wheels was broken (maybe by the shipping company). I phoned Smart Furniture straight away, emailed them a photo and they immediately sent me a new one...fast! I would buy from them again without hesitation!
Materials: The Mirra chair's components are constructed from steel, plastic, aluminum, foam and textile.
