Environmental Information

Herman Miller's commitment to corporate sustainability naturally includes minimizing the environmental impact of each of our products. Herman Miller's Design for the Environment team (DfE) applies environmentally sensitive design standards to both new and existing Herman Miller products, utilizing the McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) Cradle to Cradle Design Protocol.

Cradle to Cradle Design Protocol goes beyond regulatory compliance to thoroughly evaluate new product designs in three key areas:

  • Material Chemistry and Safety of Inputs: What chemicals are in the materials we specify, and are they the safest available?
  • Disassembly: Can we take products apart at the end of their useful life, to recycle their materials?
  • Recyclability: Do the materials contain recycled content, and more importantly, can the materials be recycled at the end of the product's useful life?
The Mirra chair is the first office product to be developed from the beginning under the guidance of our DfE team. Bill McDonough believes Mirra represents the most advanced and thorough application of Cradle to Cradle principles a furniture maker has ever brought to the market.

MBDC Cradle to Cradle Certification

Mirra is MBDC Gold and Silver Cradle to Cradle certified, depending on configuration. This means that Mirra is composed of environmentally safe and healthy materials, is designed for material reuse in a closed-loop system, such as recycling or composting, and is assembled using 100-percent renewable energy.

The Mirra Chair is up to 96-percent recyclable at the end of its useful life.

Environmental Practice

The Mirra chair by Herman Miller is one of the finest green products on the market today. It is the first chair produced under Herman Miller's outstanding Design for the Environment internal directive (DfE), and Mirra does the program proud.

Composed of 42 percent recycled material, and 96 percent recyclable itself, Mirra is a responsible, sustainable chair. The Mirra chair has been certified MBDC Gold and Silver, depending on the circulation, which means that the materials, down to the molecular level, are carefully analyzed and have been pronounced environmentally safe, green, and sustainable. Mirra can also count towards a company's LEED credits.

Mirra is only one of a long line of Herman Miller products committed to a better environement: by 2020, the company plans to produce 100 percent sustainable products, according to the Design for the Environment protocol. From their environmental policy statement:

Quality of life depends on meeting human needs without destroying the environment on which all life depends. As business leaders we are committed to develop sustainable business practices that meet the needs of the present without compromising the welfare of future generations. Sustainability demands that we pay attention to the entire life cycle of our products. We will develop strategies that enable us to move toward sustainability while enhancing the value offered to customers. We will measure and monitor progress toward our environmental goals as a key metric of our business success.
