Nelson 9-Drawer Miniature Chest by Herman Miller
designed by George Nelson

Small world. Nelson miniature chests provide lots of wonderful little places to keep wonderful little things. Offered in several sizes and drawer configurations, with or without pedestals, they make an interesting addition to any room in the home or office. Made with hand-fitted drawers- the kind of craftsmanship designer George Nelson insisted upon in 1952 and that is harder and harder to find.

There's just no getting around this fact: A well-made drawer is fitted by hand. For these chests, our cabinetmakers hand fit each drawer for proper alignment and to ensure that the wood-on-wood drawer glides operate smoothly and will continue to do so. Each model has one jewelry drawer, with dividers, to organize and store small items.

George Nelson was fascinated with all things Japanese, and that influence is clear in the design of is miniature chests from 1952. Offered in a variety of sizes and drawer configurations, they add artistic interest and a touch of history- as well as practical function- to the home or office. Teak construction and hand-fitted drawers.

George NelsonGeorge Nelson
When writing about the course of his remarkable 50-year career, George Nelson described a series of creative "zaps"--moments of out-of-the-blue inspiration "when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of." It was these zaps that would lead to the creation of some of the most original furniture designs of the 20th century- including the Coconut Chair and the Nelson Miniature Chest.

An early zap came in the 1930s, when he was an architectural student in Rome. Before returning home, an idea struck him: He would travel Europe and interview leading modern architects, hoping to get the articles published in the U.S. He succeeded, and in the process introduced the U.S. design community to the European avant-garde. This set in motion a sequence of what he called "lucky" career breaks that were really the inevitable outcomes of his brilliance as a designer, teacher, and author.
