I have an office at home with a small flat screen TV hanging on the wall. I wanted a shelf above the TV that I could put the cable box on. The dimensions for the shelf are perfect to accommodate the box and a little bit of extra room for wiring. There is a small space between the shelf back and the wall that allows for the passage of the wires from the box to the TV. The clamps used to hang the shelf are really strong, efficient and effective. The best part is that if for any reason you want to replace the shelf, these wall hangers can accommodate any sized shelf. The only reason why I didn't award 5 stars is because the wall anchor screws provided are not reliable enough. I went out and bought some toggle bolts.

The shelf came with great screws. It looks nice on the wall, and it serves a purpose. I was a little disappointed in how easily the surface scratched, the first time I put the printer on it. The metal edges are not well attached either, but that is not too noticeable except to me.

This product was great for placing a laptop computer in a convenient location in our office. It is a very light and attractive unit as well.
This shelf can be used in a variety of ways, and is constructed from medium density fiberboard with a smooth painted finish. if the shelf gets splashed with water, we recommend wiping immediately, just as you would with any wood product that has not been treated to withstand remaining wet.

The shelf weights are as follows: 18" is 3.7 pounds 32" is 5.3 pounds 45" is 7.2 pounds

I think the total weight of all of it might be under 5 lbs. It is compressed board. Very strong though. I have a Comcast dvr and a blue ray player on it with no problems. It is rated up to 60lbs.

Is the distance between the brackets fixed or can it be adjusted based on the distance between the wall studs?
You can put the brackets anywhere you please. Ideally not spaced farther than the length of the shelf and into studs for optimum weight bearing capacity.

Does the shelf "free float" on the brackets or is it attached?
Yes, you could fit a power cord through there as long as you put the bulky part where it plugs to the wall through before putting the shelf on the brackets.
