Saarinen Oval Side Table by Knoll
designed by Eero Saarinen The Saarinen Side Table, a smaller and more portable version of the Dining Table design, is lovely, slight, modern, and impossibly elegant. Whether you're looking for a living room table or a bedside table, this version of the classic design will serve and serve well.
What's to Like:The simple beauty of the table, to start with. Then add on a layer of legitimate classic design, with the cherry on top of Eero Saarinen's personal involvement. This line of tables all qualify for museum induction, and many have already found homes there. Oh yeah, and they can really hold up a lamp and a stack of magazines!
What's Not to Like:As with all the tables in this series, their design is very specific, and therefore self selecting. They aren't going to fit in great with just any design scheme. But when they do fit in, they really make a statement.
Bottom Line:This is a gorgeous addition to many living rooms, as long as they're ready for it. It's a legitimate all time classic, and a thrill to own.The Eero Saarinen Side Tables are first and foremost pure tables. They are the work of an essentialist, boiling concepts and functions down to their invaluable attributes. The Saarinen Side Tables are effective and beautiful structures, but never showy or unnecessary ones. From Saarinen himself: "The underside of typical chairs and tables makes a confusing, unrestful world. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs." To accomplish this, the Saarinen Side Tables are on a pedestal, unencumbered by the "slum of legs," and easy to use for the whole family. The tables are available with veneer, laminate, or marble tops with a base in black, white or the new platinum 50th Anniversary finish.

 Eero Saarinen
Knoll was well known for utilizing European talent, and many items in their furniture collection were designed by Scandinavians. Eero Saarinen, originally from Finland, would become one of the most renowned designers of the mid-twentieth century. After studying architecture at Yale, Saarinen collaborated with contemporary Charles Eames and designed numerous furniture classics and buildings that would help define American style and aesthetics.
Saarinen's most famous works in the Knoll collection are the Womb Chair and Tulip Chair, but he also designed a series of dining and side tables as well as office-oriented chairs. His architectural achievements include the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the Dulles Airport in Washington DC.
