Herman Miller Setu Chair
designed by Studio 7.5

Setu Office ChairAt A Glance:
Setu is a product of the German design firm Studio 7.5, and it resembles an updated homage to the Eames Aluminum Group Chairs that helped make Herman Miller a household name. Light as a feather and inexpensive, this is a chair than can be used in both the home and the office - it'll make you comfy in both places.

What's To Like:
The Setu Chair is extremely light on its feet, making it portable and effective in office settings where they're used by more than one person (think breakroom, boardroom). The Setu is also known for being a chair where you never have to make an adjustment. The injected plastic moves and bends with your body, and you stay comfortable and supported with a minimum of engineering fuss.

What's Not to Like:
The "no adjustments" premise is great, unless you really value customization and want a more 'task'-oriented chair. If you're looking for lots of personalization features, then Setu is probably not for you. The porous nature of the chair and it's lightness can also be a drawback for some folks.

The Bottom Line:
This is an affordable, effective option for office seating, and the light weight nature makes it especially good for collaborative settings.

The Herman Miller Setu Chair is the first unmistakably 21st century office chair. New, innovative, precisely engineered, and beautifully designed, the Setu Chair mirrors the rush of technology and the bustle of the modern workplace. It's also designed to deal with the downsides of the modern workplace: long stretches of sitting, working at computers, and fatigue. Every inch of the Setu Chair has been molded and re-molded, finessed, until it has become the ideal chair for the today's office, and the today's worker.

Commissioned by furniture design giant Herman Miller, and designed by the gifted Studio 7.5 out of Germany, the Setu Chair has an impeccable pedigree. The research, design, and execution of the Setu Chair was shepherded at every step by the best designers and furniture minds in the world. When Herman Miller first contacted Studio 7.5 to do the work, the goal was simple: a work chair that was comfortable, environmentally responsible, stunning to look at, and a perfect fit for the modern office. The designers at Studio 7.5 responded with a chair that met and exceeded every immodest goal: the Setu Chair.

The first thing you notice about the Setu Chair is the artful beauty of its line. Consisting of four graceful curves designed to fit, support and comfort the human frame, the profile of the chair cuts a dramatic and unmistakable silhouette. The front curve, the edge of the seat, is designed to relieve pressure on the thighs. This is one of the persistent problems of the modern workplace: long periods of sitting which create strain, bad circulation, and even bruising on the thighs. The Setu Chair solves that problem, increasing comfort and blood flow, which in turn leads to more energy and a higher level of productivity. That's right, the design of the Setu Chair can actually help you do your job. The second and third curves combine to create a recessed joint at the juncture of the back and seat of the chair. This carved-out U creates a comfort pocket which accommodates the demands of various postures, heights, builds and weights of the user. This curvature also enables the Setu Chair to bend and recline in conjunction with your body, and under your own power.

The chair responds to your pressure (when leaning back or turning) and responds accordingly. Pretty smart. The Herman Miller Setu Chair is adaptable to every possible user, and this comfort pocket is just one of the many reasons why. The fourth curve echoes the first, and creates a softer edge at the top of the chair, where the head and neck are meant to recline. Similar to the front edge of the seat, this curve ensures the all-day comfort of your head and neck, even when leaning and reclining. The elegant arms of the Setu Chair describe an arc as well, this one sharper than the others. The arm rest tilts slightly up, decreasing pressure and discomfort on the forearms (often caused by long periods of typing) and settling the elbow into a comfortable curve. Taken at a glance, these curves are both beautiful, functional, and smart.

The next thing you might take note of in regards to the Herman Miller Setu Chair is the distinctive spine attached to the backing and seat of the chair. Studio 7.5 called this major innovation the Kinematic Spine. The Kinematic Spine is a hyper-responsive, intuitive design element that enables your unlimited and ultra-comfortable movement in the Setu Chair. Designed to look like the human spine, and arranged against the back and seat of the chair as an exoskeleton, it is a transparent, hip and useful piece of furniture design. When you sit in the Setu Chair, it is the Kinematic Spine that allows for your freedom of movement. It is the Kinematic Spine that allows the Setu Chair to be one of the first chairs that requires absolutely no adjustments or tilt settings to conform to your seating needs. The Kinematic Spine makes the chair natural and responsive, comfortable and creative. It also happens to be a wonder of engineering.

The Herman Miller Setu Chair is also known by the following manufacturer Item Numbers: CQ53MN, CQ53MA, CQ51MN, CQ51MA.

They have expended tremendous effort in lowering their impact, and creating chairs, like the Setu Chair, that exceed every sustainability goal they have. Our Design for the Environment team (DfE) applies environmentally sensitive design standards to both new and existing Herman Miller products, utilizing the McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) Cradle to CradleSM Design Protocol. Herman Miller also works with the companies that sell their products to reduce their collective environmental impact. The Setu Chair is only released to companies making a good faith effort to increase their sustainability.

The Herman Miller Setu Chair is a product of a responsible company, and naturally is itself a responsible chair. Many hours of work went into making sure Setu would be a safe and sustainable product. The Setu Chair is MBDC Cradle to Cradle certified. That means every element of every material used in the Setu has been chemically tested to ensure its safe for the user and safe for the environment. The chair has been designed for reuse in a closed-loop system, meaning it's intended for recycling and/or composting. The Setu Chair was built using 100 percent renewable energy at a sustainable Herman Miller manufacturing plant.

The Setu Chair is composed of aluminum, plastic, and steel, all recyclable. The chair itself is 93 percent recyclable, and was composed with 44 percent recycled material. Herman Miller manufactures the Setu Chair using 100 percent green power, half of which comes from wind energy and half of which comes from captured landfill off-gassing. There are no air or water emissions released when the Setu Chair is manufactured. In making the Setu Chair, no polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was used (now known as a dangerous material), and the plastic components have been parked with the ASTM recycling code.

The Setu Chair isn't just built sustainably at Herman Miller. The designers who created the chair made sure that you, the user, could take a part in the green initiative. It assembles and disassembles easily and quickly, making it cost-efficient and easy to recycle. The chair is designed to last, and is guaranteed by Herman Miller for 12 years. The Setu Chair is GREENGUARD certified as a low-emitting product. It meets and exceeds all indoor air quality requirements, and conforms to EPA guidelines.

If you are a business owner, a Setu Chair from Herman Miller can help contribute to LEED credits. That's because the packaging is returnable and re-usable, the product is durable, and composed of recycled content that can itself be recycled. It's also possible that the Setu can help secure LEED Regional Materials credits.

All in all, the Setu Chair is one of the finest, most responsible chairs on the market. And you can feel good buying it from Herman Miller and Smart Furniture, two of the most responsibly sustainable companies in the country. Durable, recyclable, green - the Setu Chair has it all for the responsible buyer.

DESIGN

Setu - Furniture Makers Answer Technology

The primary element in modern society, the lightning fast and ever-changing rise of technology in the last few decades, has radically altered everything about modern life. Work has changed, homes have changed; language and communication have been altered, the speed and efficiency of work has gone up. The designers of the Setu Chair, German design group Studio 7.5, understood this. So did Herman Miller, the manufacturer of the exquisite Setu task chair. In every detail, every design adjustment and innovation, these artists and engineers attempted to solve the puzzle of modern life; how to use technology to your fullest advantage while at the same time retaining your sanity, comfort, and peace of mind. The Setu Chair is the physical embodiment of their answers to the complicated algorithm of modern life. It's a modern sculpture in a classic tone, and a dazzling accomplishment of traditional craftsmanship and advanced technological research.

In previous years, before the advent of the technology present in the Herman Miller Setu Chair very little was expected of your office chair. It needed to be pretty comfortable, and durable, and most of all, it needed to be cheap. Your options were limited as far as personalization went, and mostly your choices came down to rolling or non-rolling, leather or cloth. When it came to actual work, no one ever made the suggestion that your chair should be a partner in the process of doing your business. But now all of that has changed. With the rise of new technology, the radical re-alignment of workspaces and the reconsideration of what work even means in the modern world, chairs have been called upon to achieve ever greater efficiencies, uses, and comfort. The Setu Chair is a tonic for these evolving priorities.

The Setu Chair was built for deployment in almost any seating situation. There are several versions of the chair; the barstool version, the rolling version, the steel base version. The barstool version of the Setu Chair is taller, with very long legs. The height of the chairs is, of course, ideal for bar seating, but also countertop meals, high tables, and cafeterias. The barstool version of the Setu Chair offers all the comfort advantages of the regular version, because of the revolutionary design which makes obsolete all the adjustment levers and gears that usually accompany the task chair. The bar stool version of the Setu Chair is simply a variation in height which suits an altered need for seating. The rolling version of the Setu Chair marries the convenience and comfort of the Setu Chair to the efficiency and fun of the rolling office chair. With the rolling Setu, you can reach your desk, tables, and all workstations with a few quick pushes and pulls. The rolling Setu Chair adds convenience and efficiency, and a dash of fun, to your workday, increasing productivity. The steel base version of the Setu Chair offers the user the advantages of steel; strength, durability, weight. The steel base Setu Chair is solid and strong, just like the design and engineering that went into it. All of these variations hope to contribute a ration of comfort and style to your busy day. The Setu comes in several colors as well, upping even further the potential for a personal re-invention and customization of the chair to your exact needs and specifications. But it is the Swiss army knife adaptability of the Setu Chair that most directly addresses technology.

RESOURCES

DurabilitySetu Chair Back
While the chair is lightweight, flexible, and thin in the back and seat, it's also incredibly strong. The elastomeric fibers of the fabric and the Kinetic Spine combine to form a flexible but strong whole that can support all types of weight, height, and shapes. Herman Miller is in the business of building beautiful, useful chairs that last a long time, and the Setu Chair is just one more in a long line of excellent office chairs. It's also just the latest to come with an outstanding warranty from the manufacturer.

The Setu Chair is guaranteed for 12 years by Herman Miller. That's a big commitment, but the craftsman at Herman Miller and Studio 7.5, who built the Setu Chair, are confident in their excellent work and in the strong, durable materials. The Setu Chair is composed of aluminum, steel, and plastic, long-lasting tough materials. The warranty is even more impressive when you look at it in terms of value. For instance, how much would you pay to be comfortable, supported, and flexible at work per day? Would you pay a dollar? More than that?

Put it in context. How much do you spend a day on snacks? Coffee? When you consider the small expenses you encounter every day, they all start to add up. How many of those things last you for years and years to come, protected by a stout warranty and excellent customer service? The answer is probably very few of them. It makes sense to invest in quality, comfort and dependability. Ally yourselves with Herman Miller and Studio 7.5, because they understand how the small things make big differences.

If you invest in the Setu Chair, over the 12 years of its warranty (and at it's current base cost of $499) it will only cost you 11 cents a day to have all that and more in a beautiful, stylish, and modern chair. That's a bargain no matter which way you slice it.

One Size Fits All
There really is no way for a chair with complex mechanisms to be compatible with multifarious body types. The Setu allows for any sized individual to sit down and experience instant comfort. By cutting out the frivolity of excess systems, the intuition of this design adapts perfectly to all shapes and sizes with one simple motion: sitting down. There are no quirks, no gimmicks, just a startlingly simple solution to a startlingly frustrating problem. Thanks to Studio 7.5, we now know that this problem need not be addressed with bells and whistles. Simple motion meets simple design.

The Kinematic Spine
There is a high amount of ergonomic knowledge built into this chair. Before the Herman Miller Setu Chair, the Kinematic Spine had to separate with a joint between the seat and the back of the chair. The new design provides one fluid piece that seamlessly connects the back of the chair to the seat, providing an unprecedented amount of support and flexibility. Studio 7.5, in the process of designing this chair, examined the basic mechanics of the human body, and then dissected those mechanics with complex equations and engineering. At the outcome some things became very clear; one of these was that the human body has a spine, not a hinge. Spines curve, they don't connect at a 45 degree angle. These simple observations are the ones that directly informed the design of the Kinematic Spine of the Herman Miller Setu Chair. It's amazing what a simple observation of the human body can lead to. The most complex organism provides a simple insight into furniture design.

Inspired By Nature
The spiraling shape of the Kinematic Spine was painstakingly designed to reflect the beauty of naturally occurring, underwater specimens. If you look at coral reefs and shellfish, the spiraling design of the crustacean's shell is a direct influence to the aesthetics of the Setu chair. The natural grace with which these organisms operate is distinctly correlated to the spiraling beauty of the Kinematic Spine of the Herman Miller Setu Chair. Beautiful in nature meets beautiful indoors. Thanks to Studio 7.5 for taking these natural cues to create a chair that is as appealing to the eyes as it is to the body.

I just test-sat the Setu at an office furniture store. Of the 20 or so chairs I tested, this was, by far, the best for my human frame. I found only one other chair (with 5 additional controls!) that was even close to being as comfortable. What a great design! The lumbar support on the Setu is wonderful.

Since I have a long torso, few chair arms are useful. If they are adjustable, they must be set at their highest level. In most chairs, my arms hang from my shoulders without relief. I only wish the arms on the Setu were adjustable (or higher above the seat). Then, for me, it would be the perfect chair.

First Impressions
After having done some preliminary research on the Setu Chair, I wasn't expecting very much in the way of actual enjoyment. It's being sold as a revolutionary chair, a one of a kind sitting experience that harnesses technology and design to produce a new sort of extremely comfortable office seat. To me, it just looked like a sort of small, not particularly comfortable or exciting plastic and mesh chair that had no adjustments. The truth is somewhere in the middle, and a lot better than I expected, I have to admit. The Setu is small, but that doesn't detract from how comfortable it is. The mesh is extremely high tech, as is the "kinematic" spine support structure, and I had to sit in the chair for a long time before I felt any discomfort. I really missed having the adjustments that come with most office chairs however - if I had specific needs for support or movement, I would have had a real problem with this chair. In the end, this is a comfortable chair at a comfortable price, but I wouldn't recommend it for any seriously long stretches of sitting.

The X Factor
The kinematic spine, which is to say, the lack of adjustments. For some, this will be a turn-off, but it contributes to a clean profile and more stylish chair. For many, that's a trade worth making.

The Bottom Line
The Setu Chair is above average, and an effective office chair. For the average worker on an average workday, it outperforms most of the competition. However, it's not made to work long hours or to fit every person that uses it. On the whole, a good but not great piece of furniture.

Comments about Herman Miller Setu Chair:

I held out for over a year on spending this kind of money on a desk chair but, after much searching, both of my soul and online, I found nothing else that compared in style, color and comfort offerings. I am so happy with this chair, it suits my needs perfectly! Assembly could not have been more easy, no tools or mechanical minds needed.
A huge shout out to the folks at Smart Furniture, who personally ensured home delivery suited my schedule, not theirs!!

Color was a surprise: I ordered Rattan, but the frame, arms and seating fabric actually look like various shades of gray. Attractive, but not what I expected. Highly recommend unless you're very picky about color match. Delivered ahead of schedule. Great service.

I bought several Setu chairs for my studio and they are great. As a graphic designer who sits in an office chair for extended periods of time - the Setu chair is very comfortable. The chair bends and flexes to your movement (no clunky adjustment knobs needed). The material molds to your body. I like the simplicity of the adjustments (only one for the height). I was able to customize the chairs to fit company's brand colors - they look great in our studio environment!

My wife is a quilter and uses the armless version of the Setu as the primary chair in her sewing loft. The Setu is light to move around and ventilates extremely well. The ergonomic curve of the back portion provides good lumbar support. A heavyweight person might overwhelm the structure of the chair. The mesh fabric appears durable. We'll see how it holds up to sunlight and repeated use over time. Our experience with Herman Miller is that they stand behind their products.

Comments about Herman Miller Setu Chair:

I ordered this chair without arms, but with the braking wheels which were very unsatisfactory. If the chair was empty, the brakes were on and thus it was very difficult to move the chair. [...] The only problem with the chair is that the top back of the chair has no frame, so you cannot hold on to the top of the chair to move it or drape anything on it. However, there is a frame that you can grab in the middle of the back, so it just takes some getting used to. Other than that, I think that it is a fantastic chair.

I am 5'4" and weight 124 lbs. I felt the chair was too small for me. The seat depth felt inadequate by at least 2 to 3". I hated to return it, as it is a gorgeous chair. But what size person is this chair made for?

I use this chair at my desk and as a reading chair as well - it tilts back naturally. Very lightweight, NO assembly to speak of...open the box, set the chair on the base and sit down...no adjustments except height - perfect for me. (I'm 5' 7" and 130 pounds).
Also, always looks clean and any smudges wipe off easily...very sharp chair.

It's a great product. However price vs comfort it comes up a little short. It's not a great chair for long periods, say no more then an hour. I'm glad I bought it, but I wish it was maybe a $150 cheaper.

I use this chair at my computer but with my very small space I was surprised that the legs come out further than the seat so I have to be careful about moving the chair and not getting tangled with my very short legs!! The mesh seat and back are heaven, with no pressure points from the mesh construction making the the spine, hips and behind legs more comfortable than expected... I get sciatica very easy due to spinal cord injury! --highly recommend for arthritic people!!

Comments about Herman Miller Setu Chair:

I got to sit in a Setu Chair for about a month and it's pretty decent as an office chair. It doesn't have all the ergonomic goodies like lumbar support and adjustable arms like some higher-priced seating options out there, but as a 'daily-driver' task chair for the everyday user it was definitely a good chair to sit on.

The fabric on the seat and back is pliable but pretty supportive, and the flexing back gives just enough so it's easy to lean back without having to force your weight on the chair. It's got seat height adjustment which allows me to move the seat height to a shorter than normal height - nice since I have shorter legs and I end up having to slouch to have my feet on the ground with non-adjustable height chairs.

4 stars for not being the perfect chair, but what chair is?

                                    A: Setu Lounge Chair

Q: How do I clean it?
A: H-Alloy Base, Frame, Kinematic Spine, and Arms: For normal cleaning, wash surface with a soft cloth soaked in mild detergent and warm water.Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Do not use solvents or abrasive kitchen cleaners.

Lyris Suspension Material: For normal cleaning, vacuum material as needed using an upholstery attachment. Vacuuming picks up dust and reduces the need for professional cleaning. Do not brush fabric or use a vacuum attachment with a rotary brush. Brushing may permanentlydamage the nap or change the character of the fabric.

To spot-clean fabric, immediately soak up the stain with a soft absorbent cloth. Do not dry the stain completely or it may set. The longer a stain is allowed to remain on a fabric, the more difficult it is to remove. For water-based stains such as coffee, soft drinks, fruit juices, or milk use a water-basedcleaner (specifically made for cleaning fabric) or a solution of mild (alkaline) warm soapy water(not overly soapy) applied with a damp clean cloth or sponge. Work the cleaner into a lather or foam. Never use hot water; it will set the stain. Avoid scrubbing.

For oil-based stains such as lipstick, grease, or salad dressing use a dry cleaning solutionapplied with a damp clean cloth or sponge. Test the cleaning solution on a small, concealedarea first. If there is no spotting, ringing, or damage to the fabric or its dyes, apply the cleaning solution to the soiled area with light, quick strokes. Begin at the outside of the stain andwork toward the center, being careful not to over-saturate the fabric. K2r is also a product thatcan be used. See product label for complete instructions.

Do not over apply water or any liquid solution to fabric. Excessive wetting of the fabric with any liquid solution may result in permanent damage to the material.

Do not rub too vigorously or you may damage the nap of the fabric or break fibers. Several light applications are better than one heavy application. Soak up all remaining solution and then use another clean cloth or sponge dipped in coolwater to remove any residue.

Let fabric dry thoroughly and then vacuum well before using. If the stain resists cleaning, call a professional cleaner.

                                    Is the Setu Chair recyclable?
This is a popular question among Smart Furniture customers, and it goes to the heart of what the Setu Chair, Herman Miller, Smart Furniture, and Studio 7.5 (who designed the chair) are all about; service. Not only does the chair make you comfortable, give you great support, and move easily wherever you need it, it also helps you lessen your impact on the environment. Emphatically, yes, the Setu Chair is recyclable. But it isn't only that; it's also easy to recycle. The materials in the chair can be easily broken down into component parts and recycled without the annoyance of time-consuming recycling preparation. It won't be the first time many of the components of the chair have been through the recycling process, as 44 percent off the chair is itself constructed from pre-used and post-consumer materials.

The Setu Chair is composed of aluminum, plastic and steel, 93 percent of which is easily recyclable. That's a huge percentage, much larger than most furniture chains will ever offer. The Setu us also very light and easy to carry; one more obstacle to good recycling habits removed that other furniture companies rarely match. The breezy seat and back of the chair, somewhat perforated to allow the free passage of air, are emblematic both of the chair's remarkable lightness and of Herman Miller's commitment to the idea of natural elements combining with design to form a beguiling and satisfying product.

Herman Miller is on the cutting edge of green technology, and their green factories and manufacturing facilites, as well as their green products, are the envies of furniture companies all over the world. They designed the Setu Chair to be a responsible product, as responsible as they are. The life of the Setu begins in one of Herman Miller's zero emissions manufacturing facilities, where it is built from the ground up by skilled craftsman and the latest technologies. When a Setu Chair is sold, the lifecycle continues within the recyclable and re-usable packaging in which the chair is sent to vendors. It ends, naturally and without disrupting the natural world in a significant way, with the easy and responsible recycling of the product itself.

You won't find a chair this recyclable, this green-friendly, almost anywhere else. That's just one of the many attributes that make it a true Herman Miller product.

What's all this about no adjustments?
The Setu Chair is a wonder of furniture engineering. The only adjustment the user has to make when sitting in the chair is height. That's it. The Setu's groundbreaking Kinematic Spine and comfort pocket will take it from there. The edges of the seat flex and conform to your shape, as does the elastomeric fiber that composes the seat and back. The Kinematic Spine stretches, bends, leans and reclines with you, reading your body to find your center of gravity and your optimum weight distribution. The Setu is a truly smart chair, intuitive and capable. It was designed in Germany by the innovative and free-spirited design firm Studio 7.5, and their playful yet technologically sound design ethos sets the chair apart from most of it's contemporaries. For Studio 7.5, less is usually more, both in the philosophical and the literal sense. The Setu Chair literally has less material than most fine chairs on the market today. It's breezy and super-light through the seat and back. At the same times, it's also extremely strong and agile, able, with its high-tech elastomeric fiber and the Kinematic Spine, to support the weight, stress, and bending of any body. Less is literally more with the Setu Chair, and that's a wondrous paradox.

How durable is the Setu Chair?
Very durable.

The Setu is guaranteed for 12 years by Herman Miller. That's a big commitment, but the craftsman at Herman Miller and Studio 7.5, who built the Setu Chair, are confident in their excellent work and in their strong, durable materials. The Setu Chair is composed of aluminum, steel, and plastic, long-lasting tough materials. The warranty is even more impressive when you look at it in terms of value. For instance, how much would you pay to be comfortable, supported, and flexible at work per day? Would you pay a dollar? More than that? If you invest in the Setu Chair, over the 12 years of it's warranty (and at it's current base cost of $499) it will only cost you 11 cents a day to have all that and more in a beautiful, stylish, and modern chair. That's a bargain no matter which way you slice it.

Can I customize the Setu Chair?
Smart Furniture was built on the idea that customizing your furniture, the objects that will grow to define your rooms and the spaces in which you live your life, is not only important, but a right of the consumer. Almost everything we sell at Smart Furniture is customizable through our customization engine. You can choose colors, adjustment, accessories; with things like shelves you can go even deeper than that. Customization is a major part of our business and the cornerstone of our commitment to customer satisfaction and service.

So, while the materials used in the construction of the Setu Chair cannot be altered, it is still customizable to a large extent. For instance, using our customization engine you can change and experiment with the color of the elastomeric fabric which composes the seat and back. This is just one more way to make the chair your own. On it's own, the Setu Chair was built to adjust for height and nothing more; all your other adjustment needs are taken care of by the revolutionary Kinematic Spine and the elastomeric fibers in the fabric of the back and seat. Both accommodate your body at all time, and have no need for adjustment. Less is more when it comes Studio 7.5, who designed the chair.

But even a chair meant to be perfect can have your personal stamp put on it at Smart Furniture. That's Design on Demand.

The Setu Chair is a remarkable piece of engineering and design, and Smart Furniture is very proud to offer it to our customers alongside our legions of other Herman Miller furniture and accessories.
