  • Q:

How many holes does the 18" shelf have? Where are they located?
Asked on 10/2/2013 by Alene from Chico, CA

    1 answer

    • Smart Furniture Staff Reviewer

      A:

The Sumo Shelf Bracket has only 2 holes in the 18" length. Since it is just extruded aluminum you can drill as many as you like. The 2 holes are not from center but rather the center of the holes are 9.75" from each other.

  • Q:

Can I use 16 inch deep shelves and 36 inch wide shelf with a 32 inch bracket.
Asked on 9/20/2013 by Brenda from Las Vegas, NV

    1 answer

    • Smart Furniture Staff Reviewer

      A:

While this is not something we recommend, obvious reasons aside, the bracket has end caps on the finished ends. If the shelf is longer than the bracket, you couldn't use these finish caps.

  • Q:

Can I mount this on a concrete block wall
    Asked on 4/4/2013 by mary

    1 answer

    • Smart Furniture Staff Reviewer

      A:

The Sumo Shelf includes mounting hardware for drywall or for attaching to wood studs in the wall, but it does not include hardware for mounting to concrete block. You would need to purchase masonry screws, and please note that the mount will not be flush to the surface since concrete block does not have a smooth surface.

  • Q:

    Q: I had previously asked:
"What are the hole spacings for the metal bracket for the 18" Sumo shelf?"
    A:Smart Furniture said:
"The hole spacing is 9 3/4 " from one center to the next. This is on the 12X18 & 16X18 bracket."

If the shelf is 18" wide, leaving only 9" on each side of center, how can the hole spacing for the bracket be 9 3/4" from the center?? Thanks.

Is the finish on the shelf suitable for commercial use? I prefer floating shelves to store/display our glasses, tea sets, fruit, yet the surface must be non-porous to pass health code. Can these shelves be re-painted, should they begin to show ware?

Yes, and should they wear you can repaint them.

  • Q:

I just received my shelf and am trying to mount it to the wall, what are the little sticky white strips that came with it?
    Asked on 4/22/2011 by Anonymous

      A:

In the bag of tools with the bracket there is a strip of 2 sided little pieces – very thin. The strip has 4 separate pieces on it cut about ½” wide and ¾” long. If these are applied to the top edge of the shelf where the shelf sits in the bracket, (or the edge of the bracket where the shelf sits) it helps reduce some of that leverage applied and therefore also any forward leaning. You only use these if you need them, they are not necessary if your shelf is level.

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

I didn't use them. The best way I found to mount it is to go to a hardware store and buy mollies with machine head screws about 3 in long and the same diameter as the screws that came with it.

  • Q:

In the in-room picture of the Sumo shelves, is the long run of shelving made up of several separate shelves (perfectly aligned)? For example, if I want a run of 3 feet of 16" deep shelving, do I buy 2 18" shelves?

  • Q:

since most - and my - wall studs are 16" oc, I will need to use the hole set of the left 12" from center mounting hole and the right 4" from center mounting hole - will these be enough to support 25 lbs of dvd and satellite dish unit cause none of your other 2 holes are of any help in getting to the other studs?
Asked on 1/27/2011 by Jerry from CA

    1 answer

    • Smart Furniture Staff Reviewer

      A:

You are correct, studs are typically placed 16" on center, but sometimes also at 12" (for earthquake rattled California) or 24" (when 2x6's are used instead of 2x4's). You will be perfectly fine mounting the two screws into studs and the others with drywall anchors to support the shelf. Also, you are free to drill extra holes in the extruded aluminum bracket to best suit your mounting needs. Most likely not necessary given the weight you plan to put on the shelf, but an option nonetheless.
