Think Chair by Steelcase
designed by Glen Oliver Low

Think ChairAt A Glance:
The Think Chair doesn't read minds ... it reads bodies. When you're sitting in the adaptive seat and seat back of the Think Chair, your movements are meant to be anticipated by the fabric and the support systems, and the chair moves with you to keep you comfortable and supported. The goal of the chair is comfort and hi-sci ergonomic support for the back, shoulders, neck, and spine.

What's To Like:
The Think Chair is inside out when in comes to design. All the features of the chair are out in the open, rather than hidden from view. It gives the chair a very honest and very cool exo-skeletal look. One of the most fun features is the moving armrest. Both armrests slide up, down, in and out, and whether you're trying to get more comfortable or just thinking, it's nice and almost soothing to be able to move them back and forth. The chair is also quite affordable, starting at $659.00.

What's Not to Like:
We say exo-skeletal, but some say ugly. I know, harsh, but we have to respect their opinion. Something else to consider is that within a test group there were differing opinions about how comfortable the chair was, meaning that while the chair reads all bodies, all bodies don't necessarily like it.

The Bottom Line:
This is a very effective office chair, it has a good blend of unique design and ergonomic focus, and we just love those slide-y armrests. Good price, and good chair.

ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION

SCS Indoor Advantage CertifiedConstructed of 37 percent recycled content and consisting of 98 recyclable materials, Think Chair is one of the smartest and most decorated green chairs on the market. And the rest of the furniture making industry has taken notice, as well the rest of the country. As the current political (and literal) climate heats up around debate over global warming, environmentalism, conservation, and sustainability, it's a relief to know that some furniture manufacturers and retailers, like Steelcase and Smart Furniture, are actually stepping up to plate with solutions to some of these problems.

For it's far-reaching and admirable commitment to sustainability, Steelcase and the Think Chair have been featured in articles from the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Metropolitan Magazine and Grist Magazine. Steelcase Think has the ear of the market, and of the press, when it comes to better environmental practices and sustainability. It can be disassembled for recycling in five minutes or less.

This doesn't seem like a big deal, but research has shown that when you lower the degree of difficulty on recycling (for instance, making it easy to disassemble a chair and recycle it in individual parts or as an easier to carry whole) people are much more likely to actually do it, no matter how convicted they are that recycling is the right thing to do. Think Chair was the first chair ever to receive MBDC Cradle to Cradle gold level certification as an environmentally responsible product. That means each element of each material used in the Think Chair has been rigorously tested for harmful elements, and had the least amount possible. MBDC tests the materials in office chairs and other products down to a chemical level, assuring the users (and their employers, colleagues and neighbors) that their chair is safe for the air, for themselves, and for everyone. That Steelcase would go to such lengths and publish the results shows their absolute confidence in the chair. Beyond that, it means Steelcase cares enough to put forth the facts of their commitment to a candid world.

Think is C2C Certified

Think Chair is a certified level 3 product, the highest BIFMA e3 standard possible. It also holds SCS Indoor Advantage Gold Certification for indoor air quality. It may seem insignificant, but many chairs, especially those composed with foam and plastic, can release harmful elements into the air, disrupting the environment and ruining the quality of your air. The Think is also on a quest to help you or your business get the lowest possible LEED score--it can go toward LEED credits. In France, Think Chair carries the NF Environmental Label for environmental quality.

The Steelcase Think is such a smart, green, forward-thinking product that when Heifer International, a world-renowned international hunger relief agency committed to improving life abroad and the environment at home, needed new headquarters, the Think Chair was their first choice. Ordered for every worker, the chair embodied what Heifer International was all about: progressive thinking and environmentally sound, sustainable energy choices.

DESIGNER

Glen Oliver LowThe Designer: Glen Oliver Low

Commissioned by Steelcase, one of the great furniture makers in the world today, the Think Chair was impeccably designed by Glen Oliver Low.

Low has become famous the world over for his innovative and undeniably artistic interpretations of furniture, storage, and nearly every aspect of industrial design. His museum-quality work has been commissioned and in high demand for years. When you look at the Think Chair, possibly his greatest achievement, it's not hard to see why. The Think Chair braids a multitude of design purposes and consumer desires into a "transparent" chair.

Glen Oliver Low: "Transparency means that you show each component of the chair, that you can read its structure and understand how it works." Think is transparently effective, comfortable, and advanced.

Glen Oliver Low has been responsible for some of the most beautiful and award winning furniture and interior space designs of this decade. He has had work displayed in art museums as often as they're displayed in living rooms and houses, and he is the recipient of a commensurate amount of awards.

Low began his career in Germany, the country of his birth, studying at the Interior Design school at Wuppertal University. Soon after he received the "Master of Design" award from the Domus Academy in Milan for his design study of a compact car. In 1990 he began work producing office furniture for Vitra. Five years later he won the Compasso d'Oro award for Mobil, a container system which is now displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Not confined to desk chairs, Low has designed beautiful dining room chairs, car interiors, tables, free-standing shelving, and countless other objects of every-day home art. The Steelcase Think Chair is one of his crowning achievements. Get Art. Buy Think Chair today.

DESIGN

The Steelcase Think Chair is the product of years of research on people who sit. The time and attention of scientists the world over have been turning to this kind of research for years now; many speculate that the average office worker will spend somewhere in the vicinity of nine years sitting in their chair. That makes the office chair one of several new frontiers the information age has opened up to intense scientific inquiry. The questions are myriad and important; What makes workers comfortable? What makes them work harder? What makes them happy? Steelcase found the answers and responded with a comprehensive set of features on the Think Chair designed to improve your working life. They include:

Think Chair Design

    1. Your Profile Seat and Back
These are the back flexors located in the seat and back of the chair. Incredible comfort and flawless design enable you to sit comfortably for hours. All sorts of postures and seating positions are welcome in the Think Chair, as the flexors make it easy for the chair to conform to your shape, height, weight, and pressure points. It is these flexors that can save your back and spine from unnecessary strain, as well as save you time and inconvenience by making it easy to stay in your chair for long periods of time without the need to bend and stretch.

    1. Your Power Mechanism
Your Power MechanismReclining support for all weights, heights and postures, Your Power makes you one of the engineers and allows you to make the Think chair your own. An intuitive mechanism that automatically adjusts itself to accommodate you, Your Power is at the bleeding edge of desk chair design because it makes the universal personal, and deeply comfortable.

    1. Adjustable Arms
How many times have you tried to scoot up to your desk, only to have the arms of your chair bump into the edge and halt your progress? On the Think Chair, the designers took care of that problem by making the arms adjustable. They retract at will or on contact with your workspace, giving you the freedom to decide, as well as removing the annoyance of non-compatible office furniture. Of course, the arms also go up and down to suit your needs at work, and contribute to one of the most comfortable, you-centered office chairs on the market.

    1. Flexible Seat Edge
The flexing front edge relieves pressure on the thighs, easing soreness and pain. And who couldn't use a surcease of discomfort at work? The flexing edge is a simple solution to an old problem; how to keep the edge of your seat from becoming a nuisance, and how to make you comfortable enough in your chair that you don't have the constant interruption of getting up and down. The flexing edge also leads to increased circulation, improved mood and productivity, and even better health.

  1. Your Preference Control
A simplified dial mechanism that lets you set the chairs movement to your preference: by weight, weight plus 20 percent, mid-stop recline, and upright back lock.

DESIGN STORY

The brains of the Think Chair are in its mechanisms. The revolutionary user-powered Your Power control lets the chair adjust and conform to your center of gravity, weight and height automatically, with no tedious adjustments on your part. Your Profile, in the back and seat of the chair, flexes and supports your thighs and back in a variety of positions and postures. These two facets of the chair combine to make it the smartest office chair on the market, receptive to your needs in ways office chairs never have been before, and personalized just for you before you ever sit in it.

One of the coolest things about the Think Chair is that it was quite literally made for everyone; the minimal adjustments and the impressive engineering combine to make Think one of the ultimate all purpose design pieces, a piece which was created to respond to individual needs. That includes support (of the back, thighs, and spine), as well as comfort and productivity.

Think Chair with Headrest

That's right, the Think Chair is so comfortable and so easy on your muscles and circulatory system, it actually helps YOU think, pumping more blood to your brain and increasing alertness and quickness of thought. Of course, it isn't just the nature of the chair that alters according to your needs; there are practical adjustments as well. The arms of the Think Chair adjust to your specifications, and can retract on contact with your work surface. No more will you sit up or roll forward and have your armrests slam into the edge of your desk. The seat edge is flexible too, taking pressure of your thighs and eliminating numbness and lack of circulation.

Finally, Your Preference is an advanced adjustment tool that allows you to really make the chair your own.The Steelcase Think Chair comes equipped with dual back flexors, one in the seat and one in the back of the chair, both of which mold to and support the contours of the human body on contact. They have been rigorously designed to fit any body type, any weight, and they work to keep you not just comfortable, but supported as well.

But the Think Chair isn't totally automated: Owners are able to adjust the position of the armrests (they can telescope and retract on contact with your desk), choose the color and fabric of the chair, and further adjust the Your Power system to their liking. Users can do all of this using the Smart Furniture custom design feature, with which you can choose between a myriad of options for customization and personalization. In addition to optional colors and aesthetic choices, the Think Chair provides you with several options for adjustment: by body weight, body weight plus a 20 percent boost for firmer support, mid-stop recline, and upright backlock.

All of these settings provide exceptional comfort, but they work best when paired with certain sensibilities and sizes. It's just one more way that the Think Chair makes sure to give you the most comfortable and supportive office chair anywhere. These same qualities make it a great choice, whether it's used as a workhorse in the office or as a home office chair. Think is also designed to create a "comfort pocket" in the seat that will correspond to the weight, pressure and posture of the owner. Get yourself the smartest desk chair around by buying the Think Chair today, and see your health, comfort, and productivity start to rise at work.

I was very excited when I was asked to "test drive" the Think Chair by Steelcase.I am not a woman of many words so I was concerned that maybe I was not the best choice for this "test drive" and analysis, but nonetheless I agreed.

When I first sat down in the Think Chair I immediately noticed the very cushioned and comfortable seat. I also noticed how comfortable it was when I leaned back. You see, I ruptured a disk in my back a few years ago so there aren't too many chairs that are truly comfortable. So I need a chair that has great lumbar support and helps my back relax while sitting. Read more...

I am a programmer and sit all day at my 'day' job, but also spend significant time at my home office. After my employer purchased the chair for me at my 'day' job, I just had to buy the chair myself for home use. Hands down the best office chair on the market in terms of proper back support and long time sitting comfort. This chair is an investment in your back. It is NOT cheap, in fact it cost about double or more than even the most expensive chairs at the local chain stores, but there is no better chair, especially with people with back issues.

We have two Think chairs, bought here about a year and a half ago. One, the chair I live in, has a worn-out seat, and I can feel the frame when I sit in it (makes me not want to sit in it, which plays havoc with deadlines...). Not having had as much use, the other one sits fine, that is as long as you don't mind sitting in a chair that is stuck in the all-the-way-up position (pneumatic cylinder is shot). Quality, quality, quality, quality. Used to think (no pun) Steelcase was synomous with it, but no more. Lumbar support is nil anyway. I'm looking for another chair, and I'll probably buy from Smart Furniture again, just not anything with Steelcase on it. This is a great online retailer, folks.

      Comments about Steelcase Think Chair:

I tried 2 THINK chairs -- one with the mesh back, one with the traditional back. Much preferred the traditional back (feels more supportive). This chair gets better with time as it "learns" how you sit and work. And I don't have to worry about setting a large number of adjustment options. The chair does the thinking!

          Comments about Steelcase Think Chair:

Quality. Very nice. I sit for long periods of time while I write, sometimes for three hours at a time before getting up.

If this chair is not comfortable to you, then I recommend not buying it. Yeah, this may be ridiculously hard to believe but - there has yet to be a chair designed that fits every weird body size, height, etc. However ... for me (6'4" and ridiculously long legs) this chair and the Aeron chair are perfect!

So obviously a great adjustment range is available on this chair. The blue is beautiful.

A desk-type chair should not feel too soft but firm with ample back support - from right under the shoulder-blades to right above the buttocks. Can I say "buttocks?" I highly recommend this chair, but more importantly, I recommend trying out chairs at the showroom and asking one of the knowledgeable sales staff for their help. I have NEVER been pressured by any of the staff to buy a single thing.

I had high hopes for the Think based on the many positive reviews, but after sitting in it for more than a week, my lower back felt worse than it did before. I couldn't sit up straight and feel supported by this chair, even with the added lumbar support which I purchased. Too bad because certain features - the adjustable arms, the compact size - were appealing. Overall, very disappointed.

After working 8,10,12 hours a day, this chair has already proven itself to much more comfortable and provides much better back support.

                        Comments about Steelcase Think Chair:

I am a programmer and sit all day at my 'day' job, but also spend significant time at my home office. After my employer purchased the chair for me at my 'day' job, I just had to buy the chair myself for home use. Hands down the best office chair on the market in terms of proper back support and long time sitting comfort. This chair is an investment in your back. It is NOT cheap, in fact it cost about double or more than even the most expensive chairs at the local chain stores, but there is no better chair, especially with people with back issues.

                          WARRANTY

The Think Chair comes with a limited lifetime warranty on its base and frame, a 10-year warranty on its pneumatic cylinder and 5 years on its upholstery.

The Steelcase Think Chair comes with a variety of warranties to guarantee your investment and your confidence in the product. Steelcase is one of the finest manufacturers of furniture in the world, and they always make sure to stand behind their products with the very best warranties. A great warranty on an office chair like Think is worth a lot, not only monetarily, but in terms of security and confidence. When you buy a Think Chair from Smart Furniture and Steelcase, you not only get a great product, you get a great assurance that if there's ever a problem or an obstacle with the chair you can't overcome, you're protected with a great warranty.

The Steelcase Think comes with three separate warranties, each insuring a different part of your chair.
                          1. The limited lifetime warranty on the base and frame of the Think Chair.

As a great value, this warranty is practically incalculable. Over the course of the rest of your lifetime (or, alternatively, the lifetime of the Think Chair you own), you'll never have to worry about losing money on repair or replacement when it comes to the base and frame of the product. You won't find lifetime warranties from just any furniture company, nor with just any chair. Steelcase and the Think Chair are special entities, committed to the best and only the best, and that includes longevity. As long as you own the Think, you'll never have to worry about the cost of replacing the base or the frame, perhaps the two most important parts of any chair.
                          2. 10 year warranty on the pneumatic cylinder of the Steelcase Think Chair.

Another great part, another great warranty. If you have any problems with your pneumatic cylinder, if it ever needs to be replaced within the next ten years, you've got nothing to worry about. Now, what the heck is the pneumatic cylinder? The pneumatic cylinder on a Steelcase Think Chair is a cylinder that creates force in response to movement. It does this in response to the force of compressed gas (air). Your Think Chair depends on the pneumatic cylinder for various adjustments and tasks, and it's an extremely vital part to have the full Think Chair experience. A ten year warranty is truly excellent when it comes to a part like this, and you can buy the Think Chair with confidence knowing Steelcase has your back when it comes to the pneumatic cylinder.
                          3. 5 year warranty on upholstery.

The upholstery of your Think Chair is, of course, the first thing you see. Its color and texture will be chosen by the user in Smart Furniture three minute design tool, and these will be the outward face of the chair. However, we all know how easy it is to rip, discolor, and otherwise damage your upholstery, no matter what product it's on. It's quite impressive, therefore, that Steelcase is so confident in the quality and durability of its product that they offer a five year warranty on it. A five year warranty on upholstery (again, the outward face of your chair) is truly excellent. You can buy the Think Chair with real confidence, knowing that for the next 1825 days, you won't have to worry about the upholstery.

                          Warranty Value

So what's the real-time value of the Think Chair over the course of it's several warranties? In other words, how much will it cost you, per day, to enjoy the fantastic comfort, elegance, engineering, conscientiousness and fun of the Think Chair for as long as it's insured? To do this, we'll break out the three insured parts, assigned 60 percent of the Think's value to base and frame, 20 percent to upholstery, and 10 percent to the pneumatic cylinder.

                          1. Limited lifetime warranty on base and frame.

The base and frame are probably to two most integral parts of your Think Chair, so the lifetime warranty is deeply assuring. But, what's a lifetime? Depending on how long you choose to keep the chair, the cost per day shakes out this way:

Steelcase Think Base and Frame Warranty Value:
5 Years: 22 cents a day (60 percent of Think's cost divided by 1825, the number of days in a five year span)
                            10 Years: 11 cents a day
                            15 Years: 7.3 center a day
                            20 Years: 5.5 cents a day

That's an undeniably great value. All the comfort and increased productivity offered by Think for as low as a nickel a day.
                          2. Ten year warranty on the pneumatic cylinder.

The pneumatic cylinder is essential to the continued operation of your Think Chair. It powers your functions and adjustments. And Steelcase guarantees it for ten years. The cost?

Think Chair Pneumatic Cylinder Warranty Value:
5 Years: 18 cents a day (this is, of course, if you get rid of your Think Chair before the 10 year warranty runs out
10 Years- life of the warranty: just 9 cents a day
                          3. Five Year Warranty of Think Upholstery

Your Think Chair upholstery is the outward face of your chair, the surface on which you sit, work, and recline. It's the surface that will absorb the punishment of years of sitting, twisting, drinking and eating, not to mention the random elements of office furniture and staff. The upholstery has to look great for your Think to look great, and to make sure that that happens, Steelcase offers a generous five year warranty on your upholstery. So how does that shake out on a daily basis?

                            Think Chair Upholstery Warranty Value:
                            5 Years: 11 cents a day

So as you can see, you're getting an incredible value when you purchase your Think Chair from Steelcase and Smart Furniture. You get everything the Think Chair offers, all the comfort, engineering prowess, style, and productivity (not to mention the health benefits of better circulation), and you get it for literally cents a day over the life of your warranty.
