Product Overview:

Large Womb Chair and Ottoman by Knoll
designed by Eero Saarinen

The Eero Saarinen Womb Chair is a one of a kind piece of modern sculpture...for you to sit on! It's not often you get to bring great art into your home, and less often that you actually get to make it a part of your life. But the Womb Chair is one such item. Using the tenets of his wire-sculpture vision for furniture, and outfitting it with lush, comfortable material that's easy to sink into, this isn't just great art - it's a great chair.

What's to Like:

Everything. The womb imagery is all about comfort and contentment. The sunken part of the chair, the part you actually sit in, seems to envelop you. keeping you comfy. The wire framing of the chair keeps the pads and backing slimmer than normal, and gives the chair a completely unique and unbound shape. While the chair is certainly very modern, it actually fits in with several different types of decor. And it's designed by Eero Saarinen, one of the most renowned sculptors and furniture designers of all time.

What's Not to Like:

To get great art, you do have to pay for it.

Bottom Line:

One of the great luxury chairs ever made, now available for your very own home.

The Womb Chair and Ottoman, designed in 1948 by one of the greatest furniture makers to ever ply his craft, was made especially for Knoll. The owners of Knoll knew that Saarinen could produce a chair of genius, taste, and comfort, and he didn't dissapoint.

The Womb Chair and Ottoman are one-of-a-kind chairs, designed with attention to detail, beauty, and formal and functional excellence. The shape and contour of the Womb Chair was groundbreaking, as was it's attention to comfort at the exclusion of contemporary design cliches.

The main material used in constructing the structure of the chair was fiberglass, a bendable and giving material suited to chairs that hope to welcome their users. With its polished chrome base and a frame upholstered in fabric over a fiberglass shell, the Womb Chair and Ottoman is designed to facilitate a relaxed sitting posture, providing emotional comfort and a sense of security - hence the name "Womb."

The Womb Chair and Ottoman are rightly celebrated designs, and have sold for more than half a century. Upholstered in a variety of colors, the Womb Chair is perfect for any home.

Eero SaarinenEero Saarinen
Knoll was well known for utilizing European talent, and many items in their furniture collection were designed by Scandinavians. Eero Saarinen, originally from Finland, would become one of the most renowned designers of the mid-twentieth century. After studying architecture at Yale, Saarinen collaborated with contemporary Charles Eames and designed numerous furniture classics and buildings that would help define American style and aesthetics.

Saarinen's most famous works in the Knoll collection are the Womb Chair and Tulip Chair, but he also designed a series of dining and side tables as well as office-oriented chairs. His architectural achievements include the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the Dulles Airport in Washington DC.

Comments about Knoll Womb Chair and Ottoman:

My husband wanted something to recline in the bedroom (besides the bed). I took him to a local furniture store to try other alternatives which did not fit him. He resisted to sitting in the "womb" chair purely because of it's name, after a few min of asking he gave in and sat down. His 2 min response was let's get it! From there I proceeded to check where was the best option to order it. Late one evening from the comfort of my home office I ordered it online from Smart Furniture and the rest is happy history.
