Diffrient Smart Chair
by Humanscale
Designed by Niels Diffrient

Steelcase QiVi ChairAt A Glance:
With a highly breathable mesh back that's as tailored as most good shirts and a weight-sensing no-adjust recline, the Diffrient Smart Chair from Humanscale and legendary designer Niels Diffrient is a wonderful example of how technology can be utilized to make life simpler for people.

What's To Like:

  1. Self-Adjusting Recline
The finely counter-balanced recline mechanism takes your height and weight into consideration and provides the right amount of support through the entire range of motion - one major reason this chair is "smart."
  2. Pivoting Backrest
The edge of the backrest flexes during recline to adjust to your position and the pressure you're putting on the top of your back. This also provides additional lumbar support.
  3. Form-Sensing Mesh Back
Three panels of non-stretch mesh are formed to body contours and automatically adjust to provide lumbar support. The mesh is low-abrasion so it won't wear out your clothing. It's modular, so it can be easily replaced if need be.
  4. Cylinder
Adjusts to fit 95% of the people who could ever sit in the chair. It'll more than likely fit you if you're between 5'0" and 6'4" in height. If you have any doubts as to whether the Smart Chair is a fit for you, call us at 888-467-6278 and we'll help you out!
  5. Contoured Seat Cushion
Large contact area with sculpted shape reduces pressure points by matching the seated form. It's modular, so it can be easily replaced if necessary.
  6. Body Fit
The seat height has a 5" range of adjustment, while the seat depth features a 3" range of adjustment. Again, the Smart Chair is designed to fit 95% of the population.
  7. Casters
The Smart Chair's casters are 3" in diameter and can be chosen to work best with carpet or hard floors. The hard floor casters are softer, and work well with both types of flooring in general.

Niels DiffrientNiels Diffrient
Designer of the Freedom Chair, the Liberty Chair, and the Diffrient Light, Niels Diffrient is internationally recognized as a premier designer in the field of ergonomics. With a resume that includes collaboration with icons Eero Saarinen and Marco Zanuso, a background in aeronautical engineering, and numerous design awards, Niels Diffrient is undoubtedly one of the most influential designers of the past 50 years.

Born in 1928 in Star, Mississippi, Diffrient attended Wayne State University and eventually enrolled in the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he won the First Medal of Design three times during his tenure there. After traveling and working in Europe thanks to a Fulbright Scholarship, Diffrient began work at the design firm Henry Dreyfuss Associates, where he would stay for 25 years. While there, he co-authored the three-volume publication Humanscale. This work summarized his design principles which were rooted in the belief that the human body should drive design for products that humans will interact with. In his own words: "A design should look good and be appealing, but without compromising human factors. Aesthetics should enhance the technical side, not deter from it."
