Everyone and every body is unique. There is a well known adage that if you ask seven people for an opinion, you will get seven different answers. Likewise, if you look at the anthropometrics, or the study of human body measurements such as arm length and height comparatively, of seven people, there is a high probability that the end result will be seven sets of measurements which are exclusively different. It is was with this challenge that faced Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf when they set out to create a cost-effective chair that would best fit individuals' distinct needs. Aware that an ill fitting chair can be uncomfortably distracting from the task at hand, Chadwick and Stumpf rooted their design in anthropometric data to ensure that their design would be suitably comfortable for the variety of body shapes and sizes. Explore more about why a poorly fitted chair is lacking in comfort and learn more about the functional design background of ergonomics for the Aeron® chair here. Why would you use a "one size fits most" approach if you can customize your chair for the perfect fit? Meticulously crafted by Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf, the Aeron® chair employs Pellicle®, a material that creates a suspension system of support which conforms to the user's body and retains its original shape when unoccupied. The reflexive material is lightweight and breathable, distributing the user's weight evenly over the seat and back of the chair. According to Herman Miller®, "the Pellicle® was equally a deliberate design strategy in that its transparency symbolizes the free flow of air to the skin in the same way lace, window screens, and other permeable membranes permit the flow of air or light or moisture. The transparency of the chair as a visual element was in keeping with the idea of transparent architecture and technology, which Aeron® pioneered in advance of Apple's transparent iMac computers. Transparency is a major design movement. Its purpose is to make technology less opaque, to communicate the inner workings of things, and to make objects less intrusive in the environment. Aeron® is a non-intrusive chair." Tested for comfort by having scores of people review the chair, designers Don Chadwick & Bill Stumpf also relied on the advice of leading ergonomists, orthopedic specialists, and physical therapists who evaluated the chair's fit and motion, the benefit and ease of its adjustments. Taking these recommendations into consideration, the waterfall front edge of the seat reduces pressure under the thighs so circulation is not restricted. The chair's Kinemat® tilt lets the body naturally pivot at the ankles, knees, and hips. Adjustable arm rests easily allow each user to select the most comfortable position unique to their preference. Such great attention to fine details ensures that the chair is ideally suited for both performance and comfort. Made largely of recycled materials, the Aeron® chair is designed to last a long time, with parts that get the most wear easily replaced and recycled. Just what you would expect in a well thought-out design. |
