Design Story: Practical Sophistication, Durable Dependability In 1964, Charles and Ray Eames designed a table with a single segmented base, constructed of modular units that could support tops of different lengths and widths. Today, more than 40 years later, Eames tables remain a popular choice for those who appreciate durability and performance, as well as sleek and simple beauty Available in a range of shapes, finishes, and sizes, Eames tables add a note of practical sophistication to wherever people gather, from large executive conference rooms to systems workstations, work rooms, and cafe. The tables' primary materials -- wood, steel, and aluminum -- are all designed for recyclability at the end of many years of dependable use. Like all fine works of art, Eames tables endure through the decades. Like all Herman Miller products, Eames tables purchased today have the strength and durability to provide reliable performance for decades to come. Herman Miller's Design Protocol Our commitment to corporate sustainability naturally includes minimizing the environmental impact of each of our products. Our Design for Environment team (DfE) applies environmentally sensitive design standards to both new and existing Herman Miller products, utilizing the McDonough-Braungart Cradle-to-Cradle Protocol. Cradle-to-Cradle goes beyond regulatory compliance to thoroughly evaluate new product designs in threekey areas: - Material Chemistry and Safety of Inputs - What chemicals are in the materials we specify, and are they the safest available?
- Disassembly - Can we take products apart at the end of their useful life, to recycle their materials?
- Recyclability - Do the materials contain recycled content, and more importantly, can the materials be recycled at the end of the product's useful life?
- Work surfaces are made primarily of sawdust generated by other wood processing operations. As a result, work surface substrates are approximately 90 percent-reclaimed content.
- Aluminum components and steel components are 100 percent recyclable.
- Most metal components have a powder-coat paint finish that emits negligible volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
- Returnable Packaging - Packaging materials for Eames tables include corrugated cardboard and polyethylene stretch wrap. These materials are part of a closed-loop recycling system, meaning they can be recycled repeatedly. Whenever possible, shipments between Herman Miller and its suppliers include the use of pallets and other returnable packaging to minimize waste.
Product Performance - Easy assembly for cost-efficiency and quick parts replacement.
- Easy disassembly for recyclability.
- Modular bases can be configured to support tops up to 22 feet long.
- Designed for durability, an important environmental criterion.
- Backed by Herman Miller's 12-year, 24/7 warranty.
Material Content Eames table components are constructed from wood, aluminum, steel, and plastic. An Eames table is up to 38 percent recyclable at the end of its useful life. Eames tables are comprised of 82-percent recycled materials. This figure breaks down to 15-percent post-consumer and 67-percent pre-consumer recycled content. LEED Eames tables may contribute to LEED credits due to their returnable/reusable packaging, durability, pre-consumer recycled content, and post-consumer content. Depending on location, Eames tables also may contribute to a LEED Regional Materials credit. Please contact your Herman Miller representative for detailed LEED credit sheets. It's important to note that no interior furnishings, individually or collectively, can guarantee a specific number of points for LEED certification.
