What is Smart Furniture?

Smart Furniture is an attractive, flexible solution for retail stores, homes, offices, apartments, trade show displays, and innumerable other applications. Using a patented design, components are interchangeable, allowing you to build a system as big or small, as simple or elaborate, as you'd like (with no tools). What is Smart Furniture made of?

Smart Furniture components consist of a high quality  melamine with a medium density fiberboard (MDF) core.(available in 5/8” thickness in four finishes and ¾” in Maple finish only). The components are machined by state of the art equipment in the United States.  The components are scratch, dent, and water resistant.

How strong is Smart Furniture?

Much stronger than you might think. We've stored our own inventory (thousands of pounds) on Smart Furniture shelving, and our customers have used Smart Furniture for multiple, full shelves of books, CDs, collectibles, anvils, and all sorts of merchandise. Structurally, Smart Furniture resists the kind of "bowing" or swaying often associated with other furniture and shelving products, and can handle considerable vertical loads. For designs 5 feet and higher, we do recommend a level surface and restraining your unit to the wall (with standard shelving brackets, for example) to prevent tipping, but we've had plenty of customers order units 8' high and higher.

What are the dimensions and how large can Smart Furniture get?

Individual components measure exactly 5/8" thick (but are strong enough to hold hundreds of pounds each) and 9.5" deep (upon request, Maple finish is available in 3/4" thickness and 12" depth). They come in lengths of 1, 2, and 3 feet, but can be stacked and connected infinitely to reach almost any dimension you need (roughly any multiple of 1 foot). We sell numerous displays and bookcases that are 15 ft wide or wider. To create deeper shelving units, use our 2 ft deep components (2' deep X 4' wide).

Let's say you wanted a shelf unit that was 18 feet wide, but looks like a 9-ft wide unit you've found in our featured items catalog. Simply order two of the 9-foot units – they connect! Or if you wanted a 15-ft unit that looked like a 12-ft unit you'd seen, simply order a 12-foot unit and a 3-foot unit and connect them.

The components are as follows:

The unusual custom example below includes most possible distances that could occur in a design (except for designs with 2' x 4' special components, which are for entertainment centers, desks, etc.). Dimensions below indicate open space between horizontal or vertical components. Maroon text indicates the name for vertical components, blue for the horizontal components.

Shelf spacing:
Both vertically and horizontally, the smallest interior distance possible is 5-3/8" (CD-size, 5-5/8"). Average is 11-3/8", 17-3/8" on units using the E3/X component, and 23-3/8" for the larger span horizontal shelves. When two units are stacked or connected, the resulting interior space at that junction is the standard 11-3/8", which creates a clean, regularly spaced look.

Shelf thickness:
Standard thickness measures 5/8" but is strong enough to hold hundreds of pounds each (upon request, Maple finish is available in 3/4" thickness and 12" depth).

Shelf length:
Three lengths are available – 1', 2', and 3' – all of which can be stacked and connected infinitely to achieve almost any dimensions you need.

Shelf depth:
Standard components are 9-1/2" deep, but deeper units can be created using our 2' deep components (12" depth components are available in maple finish).

How does Smart Furniture work?

Smart Furniture is a unique, patented system for your home, office, store, or tradeshow exhibit that allows you to design your own shelving, display, or storage solution. All Smart Furniture components fit securely together without tools, screws, or hinges. You can stack and connect assembled units (vertically or horizontally) to your heart's content. All components work together in the patented Smart Furniture system. Slots in each component slide together for a secure fit – without the use of tools or hardware.

The units connect vertically or horizontally with dowels. You can also add tops, bottoms and sides.

How do I "Design My Own"?

When choosing a design, you can buy pre-packaged sets or create your own custom design.

A) Pre-configured Sets: For your convenience, we have pre-packaged our most popular pieces. Browse through the dozens of possible configurations in our Online Smart Furniture Catalogs. Add any of the units directly to your cart, or, if you see a unit which is ALMOST perfect for your needs, you can choose to modify the design. Go to any of the following catalogs and see just how simple it is.

B) Design Your Own: You can also create your own design from scratch. If I have added items to my Smart Furniture Cart, but I'm not ready to order, can I save the cart?

Yes. View your Cart (button at the top of every page) and just click the Save Cart button. You can return anytime for 30 days to complete your order. You can even save the custom designs you created in the Designer. When you return, you can re-open the designs and make changes before finalizing your order.

Can Smart Furniture shelves be hung on a wall?

Yes. Many customers do just that, using simple shelving brackets (such as 10" deep brackets with a small "lip" to go around the front of the horizontal shelves) found at nearly any hardware or home-improvement store.

How can I track my shipments?
