Herman Miller Designers: Eames Aluminum Group
Eames Aluminum Group Chairs
The design of the Eames Aluminum Group Chair is elegant, timeless, sophisticated: fine. The husband and wife team of Charles and Ray Eames designed these chairs to their own incredibly high standards: organic inspiration, modern material, and a graceful product that opens up a world of juxtapositional ideas. The Eames Aluminum Group Chair fits with offices, homes, desks. It's hip and retro, stylized and modern. Add executive, management, side, and lounge models, and the Eames Aluminum Group Chair is right for every situation, every mood and home.
The superlative design of the Eames Aluminum Group Chair could only have been forged in a crucible of intense creativity and commitment to excellence. So it comes as no surprise that the Eames Aluminum Group Chair was the result of competition, and specifically of a challenge between designers. Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard were designing the Columbus, Indiana, home of J. Irwin Miller, founder of Cummins Engines. They wanted a high-quality seating product for outdoor use and asked Charles and Ray Eames to develop one. Of course, having all attended school at the same prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, the Eames' couldn't say no. The result was a modern classic that has endured for half a century.
Charles and Ray Eames relied on new-age materials for the chair, as was their custom. For the Eames Aluminum Group Chair, the materials chosen were cast aluminum and a synthetic mesh. The seat backing was meant to support the mesh, holding the chair together. This was an unusually transparent design, and a groundbreaking one. The seat-back suspension was a major technical achievement, and the segmentation of the chair, like almost all of the Eames' chairs, ruins the conventional posture that a chair should be constructed of a single shell. Eventually, the chairs were no longer upholstered with mesh (they had been meant for outdoor use), and the versions Herman Miller makes available today are from the Eames' "soft pad" model.
The Eames' believed in the environment as a source of inspiration, and as a resource, to be respected and protected. The Eames Aluminum Group Chair continues that legacy not only in it's organic curvatures naturally inspired shape, but in it's composition. The Eames Aluminum Group Chair is composed of 67 percent recycled material and is itself 90 percent recyclable. The Eames Aluminum Group Chair is responsible, beautiful, stylish, and available from Smart Furniture.
