Barcelona Chair and Ottoman by Knoll
designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
The Barcelona Chair and Ottoman by Mies van der Rohe were introduced to the public at the 1929 Barcelona Exposition. Immediately, they created a sensation. The structure of the chairs, the purity and elegance of their composition, have come to define more than just modern furniture design, they represent the tenets of Modern architecture.
The Barcelona Chair is composed of two metal squares, well upholstered with leather and padding, welded together atop four sweeping ribbons of steel that form the legs of the chair. Knoll is the only authorized and licensed manufacturer of the Barcelona Chair and Ottoman, and have been since 1953.
Frame: chrome or premium grade 304 bar stock stainless steel. The chrome frame is hadn-ground and hand-buffed to a mirror finish with upholstery that attaches with aluminum rivets. The stainless steel frame is made from a single piece of shaped steel that is welded and also hand-buffed to a mirror finish. Upholstery straps attach with solid stainless steel screws.
Upholstery: 40 individual panels for the chair and 18 for the stool are cut, hand-welted, and hand-tufted with leather and buttons produced from a single cowhide. Cushions are premium quality, highly resilient urethane foam with down-like dacron polyester fiberfill.
Upholstery straps: cowhide belting straps that are dyed to match your upholstery color. The Barcelona Chair contains 17 belting support straps and the Barcelona Ottoman contains 7.
