Designer

Charles and Ray EamesCharles and Ray Eames are perhaps the most celebrated designers of the 20th century. Married in 1941, the Eames duo are responsible for some of the most critically acclaimed furniture designs of the modern era. Amongst their most famous designs are the molded plywood chair, the aluminum chair group, and the Eames Storage Units. Although they are most often remembered today for their furniture designs with partner Herman Miller, the Eameses engaged in artistic expression across a broad range of mediums- including architecture and filmmaking.

Charles and Ray Eames were a husband and wife design partnership. Their work spanned a great a turbulent period in American history, from the 40s to the 80s. The furniture they created, the films they shot, and the designs they made popular are just as exciting and meaningful today as they were the moment they were first introduced to the public. Their work is classic but functional, modern but timeless, playful but seriously developed, and generally legendary. If you were to choose the best two designers of the latter half of the 20th century, you would almost certainly choose this amazing duo. What luck that they decided to work together!

Charles and Ray met at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, a prestigious design institution in Michigan. Their courtship and marriage neatly coincided with their collaboration as artists and designers on groundbreaking products, using groundbreaking and novel techniques and methods. Among their finest creations you would have to rank the Eames Lounge Chair, the Plywood Lounge Chair (or the LCW), the Eames Desk, the Eames Storage Unit, their own personal home, and the fabulous Eames Aluminum Group (all of these happen to be available at Smart Furniture). Any one artist would be lucky to have created just a single piece as iconic and lasting as all of those.

The Office of Charles and Ray Eames still functions today, and almost all of the wonderful furniture, toys and photographs and films they made can be seen, used, and played with today.

Design Story

The Eames Desk
The Eames Desk, and the Eames Storage Unit that was designed to accompany it, have become icons of modern design. Their use of color, their playful yet functional aesthetic sense, and their immense utility have all contributed to making the Eames Desk and the Eames Storage Units what they are today. Oh, and another thing, made obvious by the name attached to both products; they were designed by Charles and Ray Eames, two of the greatest industrial designers (and artists, and filmmakers, and scientists, and inventors) ever to do work on American soil. The Eames Desk and Eames Storage Unit were made as compliments to the American worker, and the American spirit of creation and work. Sitting at one, it's hard not to be energized by the color, the irregular, intriguing intersections of wire and wood and panel, and the sense of new history; something old mixed with something new. The creators of the desk were the ideal models for any user; bright, inquisitive, hard-working, and prepared for the work of the day.

The desk and the storage unit are made today by the same company that's produced them for almost 60 years, in environmentally and technologically advanced manufacturing buildings that espouse the same intermingling of historical excellence and modern energy that the products do. They desk and storage unit are a fitting tribute the working life of Charles and Ray Eames, and to the high standards of Herman Miller.

Smart Furniture is proud to offer the Eames Desk and the Eames Storage Unit as part of our line of products, and especially proud to offer them as only one is a large collection of Charles and Ray Eames furniture, design, and accessories.

The Eames Desk is first and foremost a work desk. It was designed to be functional and helpful at all times, not merely as a piece of sculpture or modernist art. And indeed, the desk has stood for decades as much more than a simple piece of art, with sales all over the world continuing unabated since it was debuted in 1952. The flat plane of the desk top is large and squared, traditional in nearly every respect. In part, that’s because in the world of Charles and Ray Eames, one never saw the top of the desk; it was too stacked with work, plans, ideas, grandchildren, and books. The drawer on the side of the desk (you can order either a left handed or right handed drawer - the benefits of mass production at work) is large and non-compartmentalized. It can hold anything from models to papers to toys or computer parts. The openness of the drawer shuns the contemporary obsession with perfect compartments that often limit space and usability. There is also space above the drawer for more storage (between the top of the drawer and the bottom of the desk), but it's unstructured as well. If you wish, nothing but air can fill the space between the two. The utility of the desk is simple, classic, and sound.

Of course, that isn't to take anything away from the beauty of the desk, which is ample. The Eameses were some of the first American designers to focus on mass production, specifically, making the mass production of fine furniture easier on companies and easier on the pocketbook of the general public. The Eames Desk is a sterling example of this kind of machine-produced design aesthetic. It's a series of parts, all of them separate (different colors, different materials, different purposes, etc.) but all working together to form a harmonious whole. The brightly colored panels of the desk (which can also be ordered in neutral tones) work as playful counterpoints to the more traditional beechwood accents and metallic support systems that go into the desk. There is a series of wires that criss-between the metallic legs of the desk at irregular angles. The effect is symmetrical when viewed head on, and very pleasing to the eye; it gives the impression that the desk is being held together, as if it may burst from the energy of the panels, materials, color and work. The angles draw the attention of the viewer, but they are a design thrill in keeping with the aesthetic whole rather than a distraction or misstep.

The look of the desk is cheery but professional, robust and energetic. It wears the influence of Japanese architecture and modernism proudly and winningly. The Eameses were great champions of a sense of play; they liked playing with forms in ways that resembled tinker-toys, jigsaw puzzles, and blocks. While very sophisticated, the designs they came up with often captured a joyful attitude (for instance, the way they designed the windows and walls of their personal home was very similar to the way the panels and lines of the Eames Desk are utilized) toward work, play, and living. The desk is an obvious addition to their canon of energetic, bright, and original design ideas. But it is also a very functional work space.

Elements of Function
The desk, defined in very general terms, includes a flat plane workspace and a large attached drawer. It also features extra, open storage space on top of the drawer, between it and the top of the desk. The features are simple but effective, and when combined with the overall design aesthetic, produce the feeling of a re-invented or re-imagined classic.

This is a modern desk only in it's sense of aesthetic design. In form and function, it is classic, marrying a kind of linear austerity to an essentialist philosophy. There is one work surface, one drawer, one extra storage space, one place for a chair. It's singular, but useful, and beguiling in it's simplicity and elegance.

The desk will fit comfortably in most office spaces, including home office space. It's 5 feet wide and 28 inches deep, and it rises 29 inches above the floor. The desk on the left or right hand side (according to your personal preference) rises 16 and 1/4 inches above the floor. In all, while it isn't a "compact" desk, neither is it an expansive one. It's impressive nature comes from it's design and it's aesthetic, as well as it's history, not from a brute impression of size.

There are few desks on the market as efficient and basically functional as the Eames Desk. And there are certainly almost none with the heady mixture of joy, beauty, and utility that this desk brings to the table. Smart Furniture is proud to offer the Eames Desk to our customers, as well as the complimentary Eames Storage Unit.

Great, simple desk for minimalist mid-century design fans. Not a lot of storage - just one drawer and one shelf, but if you keep your workspace pretty clean, it works great.

Comments about Herman Miller Eames Desk, Right-Hand Drawer:

I use this desk for my computer. It comfortably fits two 24 inch monitors and speakers on the side. I have a Tolomeo lamp clamped to it. There is a thinner surface, and then a thicker black piece under the desk, so this created some problems with my monitor mounts. Not really a big deal--just need to buy a monitor mount that will work with this desk.

The desk looks smaller than it is due to the thin supports. That said, I have it on carpet and it is extremely sturdy. Does not move at all when I try to shake it. The surface is also HARD. I accidentally dropped a monitor with mount attached onto it, and it made a tiny, tiny, dent; don't try this at home though.

The surface is beautiful. I love how it looks. I also like the file drawer. It is letter size, but given its length I am sure you could get it to work with legal and just file those laterally. It is full extension, which I love.

    Service and delivery comments:

Delivery was excellent. It was delivered in the agreed upon time-frame, and they were flexible in scheduling delivery for a Saturday. All packaging was removed before the desk was brought out of the truck, and then it was carried into the front door of my condo. The workers were wearing boots and understandably could not remove them, so my girlfriend and I carried this into the room. It is heavy on the drawer side, but not very heavy on the other side.

Comments about Herman Miller Eames Desk, Right-Hand Drawer:

          First Impressions
The Eames Desk and the Eames Storage Units are one of the more famous office sets in the Herman Miller collection. Designed by Charles and Ray Eames, and therefore possessing all the timeless design qualities and historical value those name bestow, the desk and the storage units have remained popular since their debut, half a century ago. They remain popular because they remain beautiful and functional, and their classic look and gold-plated pedigree accrue value with every passing year.

The desk and storage unit that is sold today from Herman Miller is identical to the one sold in 1960, 1970, 1980, and so on. They are notable for their colorful panels, their handsome and textured wood accents, and the metal legs and wires that keep them all together in an effective and beguiling package. The desk includes a single well-proportioned drawer with space between it and the top of the desk for more storage, and the plane of the desk itself is of medium size. Modern workplaces, where the laptop is generally the only major tool, are even more suited to this simple, pretty layout; they don't need lots of nooks and crannies, or multiple drawers. The plane of the desk, the single drawer, and the playful, colorful aesthetic of the desk are just right for the apple generation.
