Eames House Bird by Vitra
designed by Charles and Ray Eames

Charles and Ray Eames augmented the interior collage of the Eames House with numerous objects brought back from their extensive travels. The figure of a black wooden bird- evidently one of their most prized objects of American folk art- has stood in the center of their living room for over fifty years.

  • Black lacquer finish
  • Dimensions: 10.75" h x 3.5" w x 11" l

The Vitra Home Collection is not an interior design system or a homogeneous product line which promotes a uniform style. Rather, Vitra considers the furnishing of one's home as a process of collage - a gradual assemblage of products and objects. Not to be confused with coincidental accumulation of things, this process is a conscious arrangement that grows and changes with regard to both content and style, according to the owner's individual preferences and circumstances.

Environmental Information

Vitra has long been concerned about a healthy environment. It is a topic that exerts influence over all that the company undertakes. For Vitra, the primary focus has always been and continues to be the longevity of the products it produces.

Since 1997, Vitra has been certified according to the DIN EN ISO 9001 and DIN EN ISO 14001 standards for quality and environmental management. Always desiring to manage resources as responsibly as possible, Vitra strives to reconcile materials, packaging and recycling processes with dwindling resources, increasingly scarce energy supplies and the ever-greater impact on the environment.

About The Manufacturer

VitraVitra has manufactured furniture designs by Charles & Ray Eames and George Nelson since 1957. Building on this foundation over the years, the company has developed a wide range of furnishings for the office, for the home and for public spaces in collaboration with progressive designers.

Founded in 1950 as a family-owned company, Vitra is known as more than just a design-oriented manufacturing company. The name also brings to mind the Vitra Design Museum, as well as a collection of modern furniture and its accompanying archive, workshops and publications on topics of design, and an architectural concept that unites buildings by Frank Gehry, Nicholas Grimshaw, Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando, Alvaro Siza, Herzog & de Meuron and SANAA at the Vitra Headquarters in Birsfelden (Switzerland) and on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein (Germany).

Charles Eames, born 1907 in St. Louis, Missouri, studied architecture at Washington University in St. Louis and opened his own office together with Charles M. Gray in 1930. In 1935 he founded another architectural firm with Robert T. Walsh. After receiving a fellowship in 1938 from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, he moved to Michigan and assumed a teaching position in the design department the following year. In 1940, he and Eero Saarinen won first prize for their joint entry in the competition "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" organized by the New York Museum of Modern Art. During the same year, Eames became head of the department of industrial design at Cranbrook, and in 1941 he married Ray Kaiser. Ray Eames, née Bernice Alexandra Kaiser, was born in Sacramento, California in 1912. She attended the May Friend Bennet School in Millbrook, New York, and continued her studies in painting under Hans Hofmann through 1937. During this year she exhibited her work in the first exhibition of the American Abstract Artists group at the Riverside Museum in New York. She matriculated at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1940 and married Charles Eames the following year. The influence of Charles and Ray Eames was fundamental to the development of Vitra. Its activity as a furniture manufacturer began in 1957 with the production of their designs. Yet it was not only the products of Charles and Ray Eames that left their mark on Vitra. With their approach to and understanding of design, they made an ongoing contribution to the values and goals of the company.

Comments about Vitra Eames House Bird:

Love it. Kind of fragile and can be easily knocked over, if you have kids I would definitely put it in a safe place, out of reach.

I have wanted this bird for a while, but finally decided to order it and add it to my shelves. He is perfect -- large in scale, bold, and makes a statement! Feels like a perfect addition in autumn.

Comments about Vitra Eames House Bird:

classic piece that looks great anywhere you would like to put it. its bigger than we expected but we still enjoy it. the legs are a little close together so it makes it a little unstable so be careful putting it on high places or anywhere the children can knock it over.
