Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman

by Charles and Ray Eames

Looking for a taller version of this Eames Lounge Chair? Please click here.

At A Glance:
The Eames Lounge Chair is probably the most famous mass produced piece of American furniture. Designed and built by the genius duo of Charles and Ray Eames, sat in and admired by countless (and comfortable) people over the years, this is the ultimate lounge chair.

What's to Like:
Everything. The rich leather, the elegant and groundbreaking molded plywood shell, the intense comfort, and the beautiful ottoman. Not to mention the historic nature of the chair and the design, and the cultural cachet of the Eames name. No modern recliner is more comfortable, and no piece of furniture is more beautiful or more justly famous. This is the Emperor of all lounge chairs.

What's Not to Like:
This is an expensive piece, and very fine one. It's worth every penny, but that's a lot of pennies. Also, if you're on the taller side of the height spectrum, say, 5'10" or over, the Eames Lounge Chair might not be for you. You can still be very comfortable in it, but you have to scoot forward in the chair in order for your head to stay supported.

Bottom Line:
You can't buy a better lounge chair for your home. This is the absolute creme de la creme, made by the greatest design team of all time, produced by the best furniture company in America.

The chair has been on display for decades at museums like the Art Institute of Chicago, and New York's Museum of Modern Art, and the reams of scholarly, critical, and fan writing and correspondence is enormous. It's truly one of the most famous and well-respected chairs ever built, and now it can be yours through Smart Furniture and Herman Miller (Herman Miller secured the rights to sell Eames furniture, and there isn't a more fine or trustworthy furniture company out there).

The matching Eames Ottoman can be purchased individually here.

The Eames Lounge Chair in White Ash is also available with playful light-toned leathers.

The Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair is also known by the following manufacturer Item Numbers: ES670, ES671, ES67071.

Leather Options

  • Stock Leather
Chromium free and from Austria this stock Herman Miller leather is a winner for most. With a matte, soft feel this is the most popular leather used on Herman Miller upholstered items.
  • Open Line Leather
Austrian by birth, yours by choice. Open Line leather is closest to the stock Herman Miller leathers but available in a wider array of colors.
  • MCL Leather
Italian by birth, MCL has a soft hand and natural touch with great performance; and it's easy on the earth. It will show more wrinkles over time and wear well. Avoid high-wear applications that require high cleanability and those which expose the leather to direct sunlight. It has a medium grain and shine and is a nice upgrade from the standard leather for the price.
  • Dream Cow Leather
With a gentle calfskin grain (it's not calfskin though, its European full grain aniline dyed cowhide), this leather is soft and comes in many great colors to accent your decor. This is a leather of great versatility, perfect when Royal Hide is out of budget, but where the look is wanted.
  • Metallic Dream Cow Leather
A gentle calfskin grain (again, not calfskin but European full grain aniline dyed cowhide), infused with metals and soft shine, on cowhide for huge versatility. Updated, offbeat, moody colors.
  • All Grain Leather
Not too big - not too small - just "All Grain". Color and quality together wedding grain and color, always with a feeling of luxury. European full grain aniline dyed cowhide powered by Crypton, "All Grain" becomes an easy choice for high traffic areas and commercial offices.
  • Royal Hide Leather
This versatile leather is the most beautiful of its kind. The color range is huge, reflecting its broad applicability. It will develop a rich patina over time, making it a great heirloom, eliminating the need for reupholstery. A European full grain aniline dyed cowhide leather with no limits - sky, earth, sea.

Charles and Ray Eames were pioneers, constantly looking for new materials for their innovative designs. The couple's first plywood chair - the Eames Lounge Chair Wood (LCW)-used a heavy rubber washer glued to the backrest of the chair and screwed to the lumbar support. These 'shock mounts' allow the backrest to flex slightly. This innovation is used in the design of the Eames Lounger. The backrest and headrest are screwed together by a pair of aluminum supports.

The Eames Lounge Chair is molded by three curved plywood shells. The shells are made with several thin layers of wood veneer adhered together and shaped under heat and pressure. The plywood and cushions are the shaped the same (i.e., composed of two curved forms interlocking to form a solid mass). The head rest and back of the Eames Lounger are proportional.

The Eames Lounger is suspended on the seat via two connection points in the armrests. The armrests are screwed to shock mounts on the interior of the backrest shell, allowing the backrest and headrest to flex when the chair is in use. This is part of the Eames' Chairs unusual design. The rubber washers are solidly glued to the plywood shells.

Charles Eames' innovation in material selection is also apparent in the seat cushions. Instead of stapled or nailed upholstery, cushions are sewn with a zipper around the outer edge that connects them to a stiff backing.

The back is adhered to the shells with hidden clips and rings. This design allows the visible veneer to be unmarred by screws or bolts. The Eames Lounge Chair has a low profile and set to recline. The Eames Lounger swivels on a cast aluminum base and has glides that are threaded so that the chair may remain level.

Environmental Information

The Eames lounge chair and ottoman is up to 29 percent recyclable at the end of its useful life and is comprised of 24 percent recycled materials. Designers, artists, thinkers, and filmmakers- the Eameses were married for 37 years, and operated the Office of Ray and Charles Eames together for 35 of those years. They were partners in every sense of the word, sharing a home, an office, and collaborating on every piece of furniture and film they made together. For many years it was thought that Charles had been the driving force behind most of their design work, but recent findings have proven what had always been obvious about the two; they were inseparable, and the ideas they had and the projects they worked on were mutual and cooperative.

Charles and Ray collaborated on some of the most stunning and beautiful film and design projects of the last century. They are responsible for the Powers of Ten film, Tocatta for Toy Trains (film), The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, the Eames Aluminum Group furniture, the molded plywood chair, the TimeLife chair and stool, and various award winning museum exhibitions, including Mathematica. The Eames left not a stone unturned in their lifelong quest to bring the "uncommon beauty of common thing" into modern design, and practically no medium was ever eschewed when it came to getting their point across. Separately they would be ranked extremely high on any respectable list of great designers in the 20th century, but together they were unstoppable.

The Office of Charles and Ray Eames is still operating in California, with family member Lucia (daughter) and Eames Demetrios (grandson) running the family business. A great place for innovative and now historic film, toys, furniture and exhibits, the Office of Charles and Ray Eames is a California treasure.

Design

  • The Original Look. Classic Aesthetic. The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman are now available in Santos Palisander, a lustrous veneer that has the same characteristics as the original color and grain. The look of the chair, according to designer Charles Eames, was meant to resemble the warmth, familiarity, and comfort of a well used baseball mitt. The warms colors and mixture of leather and curved surfaces achieves that goal with startling precision. The aesthetic of the chair therefore reflects several ideas, feelings, and traditions; Americana, comfort, childhood, nature, modernity, commonality. All these combine to create a chair that meets physical, spiritual, and mental needs. Eames always said he wanted his chair to be a refuge from the strains and pressures of the modern world. He succeeded in every way with the Eames Lounge Chair- which has become an icon of modern design.
  • Environmentally Sound. The wood is harvested exclusively from sustainably managed forests. Additionally, much of the chair was constructed using recycled materials, and about a third of the product is itself recyclable. However, it's unlikely you'll ever recycle the chair; it's a ready-made heirloom, designed to be passed on and on and on for as long as possible, just like that well worn baseball mitt.
  • Classic Comfort. Luxurious Feel. The chair has 6-inch-thick urethane foam cushions and rich leather upholstery. The effect is luxury without pretension or ostentation, and deep comfort and relaxation without resorting to the overstuffed or bulky. The chair is classically built to serve a strong purpose well, and to go no further than elegance allows when it comes to bells and whistles.
  • A Place to Relax. The contours of the seat and high back welcome the sitter, and a swivel mechanism is built in. This is a chair that fits practically anywhere in your home, from the living room to the office. It's sturdy and comfortable, made for all ages, and serves as a mini-retreat from a harried life. The inspiration for the chair came from director Billy Wilder, who used to rig up lounges for brief naps while he was filming. A refuge from the storm was what he needed, and the Eames provided with the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. Read more about the Eames Lounge Chair's design story.
  • Quality and Craftsmanship. Attention to Detail. All pieces are hand assembled. Shells are seven-ply cherry, natural cherry, walnut, or santos palisander veneer; the base and back braces are die-cast aluminum. The designers at Herman Miller are the best in the world, unparalleled in experience and quality, and the Eames Lounge Chair, exactingly built just as it was half a century ago, is just one more feather in their cap.
  • Practical Features. Cushions are individually upholstered and replaceable; back cushions are interchangeable; shock mounts are resilient natural rubber.

Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman

By

from san francisco bay area

Comments about Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman:

Before deciding to purchase, I saw some discussion over the internet on the leather choice. Some people were complaining about the standard leather and recommending to upgrade. So I went out to Herman Miller store to check but did not see much difference between the standard one and MCL, except that standard leather is more smooth and fit better to my taste. So I ordered the standard black leather chair and ottoman and found the leather is good - probably MCL might be better in the long run but for now I think the standard leather is a good quality leather.

One thing I really like about the chair/ottoman is these are relatively small and fit in my small loft. Delivery guy carried the chair on his head and walked up the narrow spiral stair (pictured) which is just 1-2 inches wider than the width of the chair. I did not check much but we probably did not have many quality, modern chairs that fit in this space. But it still feels very comfortable and do not feel small when sitting.

Service and delivery comments:

I appreciate Smart Furniture provided free inside delivery for this item - and the delivery was truly inside to the designated space which is a loft through narrow spiral stair.

Comfortable, of course, but...

By

from Florida

Comments about Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman:

No need to describe the beautiful leather and comfortable chair. Everyone already knows all that. One thing that is not so well acknowledged is that this is not a good livingroom chair for when you have guests. The lounger is that, a lounger, it tilts back and your buttocks slide back deep into the chair. Visitors cannot sit up to participate in the conversation, unless they sit at the very front of chair. Chair is rather for watching TV, reading, catching a snooze. So yeah, it's perfect, but... In any case, it's just as well because you don't really want anyone but you sitting in your Eames chair.

Don't hesitate to upgrade leather

By

from Seattle, WA

Comments about Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman:

After visiting the Eames lounger in showrooms I was neither wowed or turned off by the standard leather. Based on various reviews I chose to upgrade to the Dream Cow leather and am so happy I did; thick, durable, soft, neither glossy or matte.

Beautiful Classic

By

from Los Angeles, CA

Verified Buyer

Comments about Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman:

We'd been wanting an Eames chair for a long time and needed something to fill out our living room corner - we finally took the plunge during a site sale, and I'm so happy we did! We debated long and hard about the color and wood options, but ended up buying the very classic Black leather with standard wood grain. The leather is buttery soft but strong, the wood is warm and solid looking. The chair itself is incredibly comfortable for lounging, reading, watching TV, and snacking (very carefully, of course!).

My only advice is that it can look a little bit like a fancy office chair, so we threw a fur blanket on the chair to soften up the style - and it works perfectly and makes it extra cozy! Also of note, it's much lower than we thought it was going to be - so we had to move corners because it wasn't properly filling up the large living room corner we originally planned. Instead, we moved it over near the bookcases and lamp and made it a little reading nook.

Comments about Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman:

We have owned our Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman for over 40 years. It has been with us in 5 different houses and we always had a place for it where it looked great, even in a restored Victorian farmhouse. It's been upholstered a couple of times but still a comfortable chair for reading.

An absolute classic and great addition to our living room. We paired this Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman with our gray Gus Modern couch, a salvage wood coffee table, and green shag rug, but frankly, the Eames Lounge Chair could go anywhere. It adds instant luxury to any room. The leather is soft and the chair is super comfortable.

A new prized possession

By

Comments about Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman:

Like so many reviewers here, I've always had my eye on this mid-century classic. Luckily, something of an unexpected windfall opened the door to getting one, and it exceeds all my expectations. This chair is spectacularly beautiful and spectacularly comfortable. I wish I could sleep in it.

It arrived in perfect condition and works perfectly (i.e., it swivels smoothly and silently). It looks great in our living room. It's a dream.

The chair is not adjustable, for folks who hope to recline farther than the set angle. It can't be raised higher or lower either, but trust me -- it is so comfortable as it is you won't think about that.

I'm in chair heaven.

Service and delivery comments:

Delivery was in the estimated time frame and the team was totally professional.

What more can be said about this classic

By

from New York, NY

Verified Buyer

Comments about Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman:

The Eames Lounge is an iconic classic that continues to deliver from both a design and most importantly a comfort standpoint. Like many others, this chair has been on my bucket list for decades and I decided to finally pull the trigger on a Palisander with black All Grain leather. The chair delivers on all counts and the upgraded leather makes a big difference as it's a much thicker, richer and more textured hide.

The people at Smart Furniture were excellent to work with and provided a wealth of information beyond the typical sales pitch you might get from other authorized dealers. I was tossed up between the different leather choices and they immediately sent me out samples so that I could touch and compare side-by-side in the comfort of my home.

Not being in a rush I shopped around locally and on line for months but Smart Furniture was the clear winner with its price, service and willingness to stand behind the product.

I did have an issue with the finish of my chair when it was delivered (wood was damaged either at the factory or in delivery) but Smart Furniture stood by me the entire time. They promptly ordered me a replacement and I was able to keep the other until the new one arrived from the HM factory. They were in constant communication and ensured that I was satisfied by placing numerous follow up calls and emails to me.

If you've been on the fence about getting one of these, hesitate no longer. When you're sitting in your living room, kicked back in your new Eames Lounge Chair you'll wonder why you waited so long. This chair has been in constant production since the 50s. You'll be handing this down to the next generation as a family heirloom.

Service and delivery comments:

Shipping was not great as the chair was unpacked down the street and possibly damaged when brought into my home. The shippers used were far from "white glove". I ended up having my damaged chair replaced and the shipping company used the second time was much better and the chair arrived and was delivered perfectly.

Superb Craftmanship and Comfort

By

from Hong Kong

Comments about Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman:

We live in Hong Kong where we can only purchase the 'standard' model at hefty prices. Taking advantage of the Herman Miller sale, I purchased this product for my wife's birthday present (she is a long time fan and is currently studying interior design) and had it shipped to Hong Kong. The product is used in our lounge room. It is superbly constructed and is very comfortable. It looks great. The packaging of the product was also excellent allowing the product to arrive in Hong Kong in perfect condition. The quality of construction and materials used is a testament to what Herman Miller produces in the USA. I hope it encourages other manufacturers to keep 'jobs at home' rather than exporting them overseas for the sake of cheaper construction costs but inferior quality.

Service and delivery comments:

The support and advice received from both Christie and Karen was nothing short of outstanding. Our order consisted of two pieces which arrived at different times from the manufacturer. They ensured our order was consolidated and shipped to our forwarding address in Miami in a timely manner. Good old-fashioned service! Our future furniture purchases will be made with Smart Furniture.

Comments about Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman:

Eames Chair and Ottoman was a great solution for our scaled down family room that is open to our kitchen. This purchase was made with my husband in mind as we were lacking in an appropriate seat for him. A Christmas present! He of course was vying for something in the oversized lounger world (uggh). This lounger addressed my checklist of visual and scaling needs. It is iconic with all the ingredients of style, function and versatility! Love how it swivels around so that the user can socialize with all the goings on in the kitchen as well. From the kitchen perspective, the walnut back beautiful to look at like a piece of art.

Took my family room from a grade B to A++. Truly worth the investment! No regrets and not just for the husband anymore!

Is the Edelman Dream Cow very scratch-resistant? I love the softness of this versus the All Grain, but worried that it may be slightly more prone to scratches from my small dog. From the leather specs it looks like both have equal thickness and durability ratings, so I'd appreciate your opinion. Thanks!

            A:

Yes, Dream Cow is very scratch resistant, but All Grain is moreso. All Grain is going to be the most scratch resistant of all the leather options because of its heavy finish, which sometimes puts it out of the running aesthetically because it is so shiny. The medium shine and semi-aniline finish on Dream Cow is above par and should meet your needs nicely.

            A:

Regretfully, there is no heating option available for the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. A built-in heating pad would be swell, but for now, you would just have to use an outside heating pad source.

What is the advantage/disadvantage to the "oiled" wood vs the unoiled wood? Thanks

          • Smart Furniture Staff Reviewer

            A:

Excellent question! Aside from requiring more maintenance the oiled finishes more closely match the look and feel of the finish used on the original chair and ottoman. Just like the original oiled finish, it will need to be maintained with periodic hand oiling. So you get a more authentic look and the wood richens over time into a nicer contrast but it takes more time to care and maintain. But don't worry, it comes with a kit so you have everything you need to maintain it over the years.

            A:

No, sorry. No covers for the Eames Lounge that we know of but maybe the below leather care instructions will help.
            Normal cleaning
            – Vacuum or dust frequently with a clean, dry cloth.
            – If leather is soiled, it can be wiped with a soft, damp cloth using a lather of any mild soap with lukewarm water.
Do not spot clean leather; clean the entire surface.
Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry with a clean, soft cloth.
            Spots and spills
            – Wipe excess liquid immediately with a clean cloth or sponge; let the leather air dry.
            – If further cleaning is necessary, sponge the entire surface—seat, back, or chair arm—with lukewarm water.
            – Let the leather air dry; never use a hair dryer or other heat source to dry leather.
            Stubborn spots and stains
            – Apply a mild, nonabrasive soap solution with a clean, wet sponge.
            – Rinse well and let air dry.
            Butter, oil, or grease
            – Wipe the leather with a clean, dry cloth and let the remainder of the oil dissipate into the leather.
Do not apply water or try to wash a grease spot.
Do not use saddle soap, cleaning solvents, oils, furniture polishes, varnishes, abrasive cleaners, detergents,
or ammonia on leather; they will ruin the finish, causing it to become sticky and cracked.
If the stain remains, contact a professional cleaner.
            Large areas
If large areas are soiled, contact a professional cleaning firm.

Yes. We would need to know the production date of your chair as the attachment hardware for the cushions was changed October 4, 1971. Email sales@smartfurniture.com with your born on date (found on a plaque under the seat of the chair) and your desired leather and we are happy to quote them for you.

        • Q:

How can you determine if a chair and ottoman is an authentic Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman by Herman Miller? We bought two of this type chair several years ago, and were told told they were "knock-offs" of this design. They both swival and rock, and it is our understanding the original Eames do not have these features. The two chairs we have need new bases.

Have there been up grades of the original design?

            A:

Thanks to Wikipedia the following might help answer your questions: In modern production the shells are made up of seven thin layers of wood veneer glued together and shaped under heat and pressure. This differentiates the newer chairs from the "original" (vintage) chairs which used Brazilian rosewood veneers and were constructed of five layers of plywood. Also differentiating the very earliest sets from newer sets were rubber spacers between the aluminum spines and the wood panels first used in the earliest production models and then hard plastic washers used in later versions. In the earlier sets, the zipper around the cushions may have been brown or black as well, and in newer sets the zippers are black. The shells and the seat cushions are essentially the same shape: composed of two curved forms interlocking to form a solid mass. The chair back and headrest are identical in proportion, as are the seat and the Ottoman.

Since its introduction, the chair has been in continuous production by Herman Miller in America. Later, Vitra began producing the chair for the European market. Immediately following its release other furniture companies began to copy the chair's design. Some copies were direct knockoffs, while others were merely 'influenced' by the design. Most notably Plycraft Company, now defunct, issued dozens of chairs that directly mimicked or were in-the-style-of the Eames 670. More recently the Chinese market, as well as other European companies, have begun making direct copy knockoffs. However, Herman Miller and Vitra remain the only two companies to produce these chairs with the Eames name attached.

The Eames Lounge chair swivels but does not rock. The bottom line: If you have a knockoff none of the original replacement parts will work with what you have. If you have an original you can use the same parts to fix your chair today. The bottom line: If you have a knockoff none of the original replacement parts will work with what you have. I have a question about the length of the back cushions. I was in a shop here where they sell the chair and there they told me there is a new version and on this one the back cushions are slightly bigger. So if you're a bigger person it still qives some headrest. The older version which they had in the shop I tried and it gave no headrest at all. Do you have this second version?

            A:

Herman Miller manufactures only one version of this chair for the US market. A company called Vitra manufactures this chair for the European market and possibly makes this larger size you speak of. The chair looks slightly different from the Herman Miller version and many Europeans prefer the black base of the US version better.
