Eames Medium House of Cards
designed by Charles and Ray Eames

At A Glance:
The original House of Cards was made in 1952, and actually had two decks: the Picture deck and the Pattern deck. This Medium House of Cards contains a set of selections from both the Pattern and Picture decks of cards, as designed by Charles and Ray Eames. It is offered in this case with a slick black cover. The images are of what Eameses called "good stuff," chosen to celebrate "familiar and nostalgic objects from the animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdoms." The six slots on each card enable the player to interlock the cards in order to build structures of myriad shapes and sizes. In the House of Cards' history, there have been a Giant House of Cards (1953), a Computer House of Cards (1970) and a Newton House of Cards (for the 1974 Nobel Laureates).

What's To Like:
This is one fun toy! The House of Cards is a really great game to leave out at a party or just to pass the time with your favorite person.

What's Not to Like:
Just like any cards, these won't stand up under toddler teeth or dog slobber. Go figure.

The Bottom Line:
The work of Charles and Ray Eames remains an ideal of design at its most virtuous - an alchemical combination of beauty and purpose. Their light and whimsical designs became emblematic of a new West Coast lifestyle whose influence reached Europe, Asia, and beyond. Though the Eameses are best known for their ubiquitous furniture and the signature innovation of the classic Eames chair, this beautiful (and fun!) House of Cards is the result of Charles and Ray applying their rigorous process of inquiry for a playful purpose.
