GESTURE™ Chair
designed by Steelcase Design Studio

At A Glance:
The GESTURE Chair is built to move, and designed specifically to support the wide range of working postures that have appeared since the advent of the smart phone and the tablet. We work - at home and in the office - differently now than we ever have. And the GESTURE Chair's purpose is to help us work more comfortably.

What's To Like:

  • Articulating Arms
The Steelcase GESTURE Chair has arms with four moving parts, and that allows them to be more adjustable than the arms of any other task chair. They can be kept low and out of the way - or they can be raised to nearly mid-chest and brought in front of your body. That allows them to serve as an elbow support when you need to work with a tablet or smartphone for any length of time. We can't stress enough how cool these arms are. They rock.

  • Synchronized Back and Seat
The GESTURE Chair's seat and back move together (Steelcase calls it a "synchronized system") to cradle you as you lean back or forward. GESTURE's back gives you room to stretch, being flexible enough to bend as you lean back farther. The seat tilts slightly as well. But it doesn't tilt nearly as much as the back. That lesser tilt enables you to keep your feet planted on the floor and creates a sitting pocket so you don't feel like you're sliding off the task chair's seat when you lean back.

  • Flexible Seat Edge
GESTURE's seat has a flexible edge all the way around, enabling you to comfortably sit in nearly any posture you can think of. Steelcase has taken comfort all the way to the edges of this capable task chair's seat.

The Steelcase GESTURE Chair is also known by the following manufacturer item numbers: 442, 442A, 442A30, 442A40.

Great chair with one exception

By

Comments about Steelcase GESTURE Chair:

I bought this chair to use at my computer. The adjustable arms are fantastic the back automatically adjusts to you, and it allows for many unconventional sitting positions that many ergonomic chairs disallow. It is clearly well made and looks great. Unfortunately for me I suffer from pain in my tailbone when I sit on this chair.I feel the seat foam Is harder than i'd like and I get very uncomfortable after about 45 minutes and have to stand up or change positions. I have ordered a coccyx cushion to try with it but frankly for this amount of money I feel there is a better option available for ME. If you don't have problems with tailbone pain and you prefer to recline a bit rather than lean forward when using your chair at the computer then I would say give this one a shot.

Rated 4/5 because I think most people would like it, but I personally have a real problem with the seat cushion

Service and delivery comments:

My delivery was in time. The chair arrived in good condition. However it was pretty unusual to come home to my apartment and find it outside the door. I would think someone should have to sign for this or at least call me to see if I would be home.

Versatile, high-quality, modern, ergonomic

By

from Southern California

Comments about Steelcase GESTURE Chair:

I always wanted a Leap due to it's mythical status as one of the best office chairs in the market. My only reservation was that it looked dull and outdated in appearance. The Gesture, with it's modern, updated design, made it an easy decision to finally pull the trigger. It looks awesome in person. It is definitely pricey, but a worthy investment if you spend many hours sitting down.

The Gesture is quite heavy, which hints at the solid quality and engineering. It took a bit of energy and strength to carry it up the stairs. Along with the 12-year warranty, it definitely feels like it's built to last. The cushions for the seat bottom and rear are a little on the firm side, but once I got used to it, felt just right. The level of adjustability of the Gesture is second-to-none. Especially, the arms. They're easily the best arms i've used on any chair. Once I got all my adjustments dialed in to my preferences, the chair felt wonderful to sit in and my back felt fully supported.

I opted for the Elmosoft leather upholstery. The semi-aniline leather is thick, supple, and looks good. It's not quite as plush as full-grain or full-aniline leather but it feels durable and high quality. It should also be easier to maintain compared to fabric. I definitely feel it was worth the added cost.

With my fully customized Gesture, it took Smart Furniture less than 2 weeks to deliver it after I placed the order. Very reasonable.

This chair is highly advanced in both appearance and functionality. Overall, a fantastic product and highly recommended!

Loving my Gesture

By

Comments about Steelcase GESTURE Chair:

I ordered the Gesture Chair with the leather upholstery. The chair is build very well ... I can't even find any minor blemishes on mine. I love how it looks in my office.

I'm using the chair as part of a sit/stand routine. I probably use it about five or so hours during the course of the day.

The chair is very comfortable and provides the support that my back needs. The seat has about the right firmness and the leather upholstery is soft. While the arm rests are not upholstered, I do not find them uncomfortable has others has commented.

I would definitely recommend to others.

Comments about Steelcase GESTURE Chair:

I've been working from home a lot lately so I wanted to upgrade my cheapo home office chair. I have a Leap chair at work that I've been enjoying for years. I decided to try this Gesture chair as it was also from Steelcase (like the Leap) but the arms looked cooler. (I'm easily swayed.)

After a few weeks I can say this chair is definitely right for me. I'm a bigger dude, and it's extremely comfortable edge to edge. I went with the Turmeric cloth and I love it.

I am a software developer so I spend long days in the chair. So far it's been great. Plenty of support and all-day comfort. There are less expensive chairs, but I doubt any are this good.

More like a Gesture of Kindness

By

from Chattanooga, TN

Comments about Steelcase GESTURE Chair:

I love this chair. I had a lot of chairs to choose from, and I honestly couldn't be happier with the Gesture. I have had a full spinal fusion and I tend to work long hours. This chair provides wonderful support, as well as a "cushy" (but-not -too-cushy) seat. The arms move all the way in, as well as out. You can adjust each feature to your own liking! Who thought up all of these options?! It is highly adaptable/customizable...and I am certain that it will please you just as much as it has brought pleasure to my workday.

Gesture Chair Review

By

from Maryland

Verified Buyer

Comments about Steelcase GESTURE Chair:

I have serious back issues, which will require me to have fusion surgery at
six levels in a few months. About a year ago, after sitting in and
evaluating at least 8-10 of the top chairs recommended for back health, I
finally decided on the Leap chair. It arrived in very short order, and I
thought that would be my solution, but it wasn't. For some unknown reason,
after sitting in the it for about 30 minutes on a daily basis, I felt a
sense of digging in the center of my back. I contacted Smart furniture about
the problem, and true to their word, they gladly returned the chair at their
expense, and put me under no pressure to reorder from them. Having tried
every chair available to me at the time, I did not pursue re-ordering.

Then, a few months ago, I noticed the Gesture chair on their site. I
located one near me, and gave it a trial fifteen-minute sit test. It was
very comfortable, and seemed to have as many or more adjustable features as did the Leap chair. And, like the Leap chair, it was also made by Seelcase. I decided to order one. When it arrived, it had a "very small" flaw in the fabric. Smart Furniture's team has been more than outstanding in getting the issue resolved; and, I could not possibly ask for better service by nicer people, but more specifically, Karen Goodnight and Laurie Stevens.

I ordered my Gesture chair in a bright plum color. Because I have a problem
back, I included the additional back support in the chair's structure; and,
it has proven to be a good decision. The chair is very study and
extraordinarily good looking. So far, it is working very well for me. I sit
in it 4-6 hours at a stretch, without additional back pain. The comfort
level has been impressive. I am not very intuitive when it comes to
adjustment; but, the pamphlet enclosed with the chair made the initial
customization very easy and straight forward. Modifications in height, back
tension, back angle, seat depth, and arm movement are all effortlessly made
while sitting in the chair. However, I'm finding that other than changing
the placement of the chair's' arms, my initial modifications are quite
satisfactory; and further alterations are rarely required. I would
definitely recommend the Gesture chair to others. I am very happy with this
selection.

    Comments about Steelcase GESTURE Chair:

It took me three tries to finally get the right chair. I first purchased the largest Aeron chair by Herman Miller. I then exchanged that chair for the medium size Aeron because the chair was cutting off circulation in my legs (my thighs were hitting the edge of the seat in a awkward way and I would slowly get cold feet...). My third chair was the Gesture which was recommended to me by Smart Furniture. This chair is awesome. You can sit in so many different positions while performing different types of work (phone, iPad, computer, writing, etc.).

Smart Furniture was awesome throughout the whole process. They paid for the return shipping and gave me free shipping to my studio apartment. Also, they were even able to give me a small discount, which was much appreciated. I would highly recommend shopping with Smart Furniture!

Writing after using it for a month. Sit on this for most of my waking time. Back pain issues resolved so clearly body thanking me.

Wish the arms are tougher to slide out, it is not bad as is but tension can be a little more, adjustable tension will be even better. Also, the range on the outside is more to get it completely out of my way when needed.

    Comments about Steelcase GESTURE Chair:

I've been sitting in the Gesture chair for about two weeks now and really love it. It truly delivers all it promises: it's easy to adjust, comfortable, and moves with you. I love the easy seat depth adjustment. I don't have long legs, so an adjustable seat depth is nice. The seat and back are super cushy as well making for a comfortable place to sit for several hours a day. The arms adjust more than any other task chair I've seen. I'm not a big person and my elbows and arms tend to stay closer to my body. With this chair and can bring them in, to almost hug my body and shift the arm pad itself more forward or backward depending on how close or far back I am from my desk. I love moving the arms around. My biggest and only complaint about the chair is the arm pads themselves. They are flat and hard. Overall, I LOVE the chair. It has a lot of personality, looks amazing, is comfortable and works with you – not against you. I highly recommend it.

Does this chair have forward tilting?
Asked on 9/18/2014 by Jaredf from California

        1 answer

        • Smart Furniture Staff Reviewer

          A:

Yes, the Gesture Chair has seat angle function which allows for a bit of forward tilt on the seat. Here is some additional information about the synchronized back and seat, plus the flexible seat edge which all contribute to all-round comfort:

          Synchronized Back and Seat
The Gesture Chair's seat and back move together (Steelcase calls it a "synchronized system" to cradle you as you lean back or forward.

          Flexible Seat Edge
Gesture's seat has a flexible edge all the way around, enabling you to comfortably sit in nearly any posture you can think of. Steelcase has taken comfort all the way to the edges of this capable task chair's seat.
