George NelsonGeorge Nelson
When writing about the course of his remarkable 50-year career, George Nelson described a series of creative "zaps"--moments of out-of-the-blue inspiration "when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of." It was these zaps that would lead to the creation of some of the most original furniture designs of the 20th century- including the Coconut Chair, the Marshmallow Sofa, and the Swag Leg Work Table.

An early zap came in the 1930s, when he was an architectural student in Rome. Before returning home, an idea struck him: He would travel Europe and interview leading modern architects, hoping to get the articles published in the U.S. He succeeded, and in the process introduced the U.S. design community to the European avant-garde. This set in motion a sequence of what he called "lucky" career breaks that were really the inevitable outcomes of his brilliance as a designer, teacher, and author.

Another Level of Quality

Comments about Herman Miller Nelson Thin Edge Chest:

Somehow I could not find any reviews online before purchasing two 3-drawer chests - in fact, no reviews of any of the Thin Edge items seem to exist on any website! So, take my word until another owner chimes in... :)

For those who have not seen this line in person, they are quite impressive in the quality of construction. Ours are walnut veneer - outside, including the bottom, as well as all interior surfaces. That's good because it adds stability and prevents warping. The drawers are solid birch. The veneer is wrapped around the curved front edges and looks spot on. The drawers are on under mount, soft close glides by Hettich (top quality), and are removable by easy to use finger pulls. The finish is best described as a clear matte/satin...not an oil finish, but likely waterborne poly. It looks very nice, not really shiny. The veneer is laid up very well, book matched across all surfaces. The image depicted on this page does not do justice to the walnut color.

The only downside I could see is the drawer glides are only 3/4 extension. Full extension would have been better, but tipping/stability concerns probably mandated this decision.

Herman Miller has a 5 year warranty. How many other furniture manufacturers offer a warranty?

At the end of the day, these are expensive, timeless pieces, but very much worth the price.

Service and delivery comments:

Delivery was through CEVA Logistics, shipped directly from Michigan. The drivers were very professional and removed all packaging.
