The central idea behind the Alcove Sofa is that a sofa can be much more than just a piece of furniture. This is especially true of the Alcove Highback Sofa, whose side and back panels reach an exceptional height. When someone sits down on the Alcove Highback, they find themselves in a secluded space. Thanks to the outstanding acoustic qualities of the Alcove Highback Sofa and its function as a visual screen, it creates a peaceful oasis- especially in spacious living areas. This effect is even more pronounced when two sofas are positioned face to face, thereby defining a room within a room.

The Vitra Home Collection is not an interior design system or a homogeneous product line which promotes a uniform style. Rather, Vitra considers the furnishing of one's home as a process of collage - a gradual assemblage of products and objects. Not to be confused with coincidental accumulation of things, this process is a conscious arrangement that grows and changes with regard to both content and style, according to the owner's individual preferences and circumstances.
About the Designer
Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec
Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, born 1971 and 1976, respectively, in Quimper, France, studied at the Ã‰cole Nationale des Arts DÃ©coratifs in Paris and at the Ã‰cole des Beaux-Arts in Cergy-Pontoise. Ronan began independent design work immediately after completing his studies, while his brother, who was still in school, assisted him. Since 1999 both brothers have worked together as joint partners in their own design firm. Their work ranges from small utilitarian objects to architectural projects. In addition to the design of domestic and office furniture, vases, porcelain dishware, jewelry and diverse home accessories, a primary focus of their work is the design and organization of interior space. One of their most unconventional designs, Algues (2004), was created in this context. The collaboration between the Bouroullec brothers and Vitra began in 2000 with the office furniture system Joyn, which was developed between 2000-02 and is continually being refined and expanded. Along with Jasper Morrison and Hella Jongerius, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have made major contributions to the steadily growing Vitra Home Collection.

Vitra has manufactured furniture designs by Charles & Ray Eames and George Nelson since 1957. Building on this foundation over the years, the company has developed a wide range of furnishings for the office, for the home and for public spaces in collaboration with progressive designers.
