Bertoia Bench by Knoll
designed by Harry Bertoia
The Bertoia Bench is a refreshing and exquisite twist on the simplest piece of furniture in the world: the bench. Long, elegant slats of wood are pre-treated to prevent warping or bending, and the color choices are handsome and varied. However the real innovation of this piece is the elegant metal rods that hold it up. Bent into seemingly delicate positions, in conjoined Y shapes that support each end of the bench, the structure is actually incredibly strong and durable. The Bertoia Bench has become a classic as surely as all of his wire furniture has, and no home deserves to be left out. Harry Betoia first met Florence Knoll in the 1930's at the prestegious Cranbrook Acadamy of Art. Many years later in 1952, he designed the iconic Betroia seating collection including the Betoia Bench for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll.
