Eames Molded Fiberglass Rocking Chair
from Herman Miller
designed by Charles and Ray Eames
At A Glance: The Eames Molded Fiberglass Rocker is a bigger, more comfortable version of the landmark Molded Fiberglass Side Chair. While you've often seen the side chair in school rooms and auditoriums, the rocker is a bit more substantial and supportive - not to mention that it rocks. Using a new process for creating fiberglass without the harmful glues of the past, Herman Miller has returned the Shell Chairs to their heritage. The Eames' would be pleased.
What's To Like:
- Fiberglass is back, and we're glad. Its unique texture and surface striations make the Shell Chairs one of Herman Miller's all-time hits. It's about time they figured out an environmentally responsible way to manufacture them!
- Classic design. The Molded Fiberglass Rocking Chair is recognizable anytime, anyplace - for good reason.
- The Shell Chairs - all of them - were among the first to have comfort as a priority during the design process. Waterfall seat edges and a curvy seat pocket give this chair an easygoing sit.
What's Not to Like:
- There is practically no give in the molded fiberglass, so attempting to use this chair as a recliner wouldn't be a good idea.
The Bottom Line:
Original design, original comfort, original character. The Eames Molded Fiberglass Armchair's got them in spades. With all the new colors in Herman Miller's Palette, you'll have a great time choosing what vibe you want your armchair to create.
Charles and Ray Eames adapted molding techniques developed during World War II to mass produce this classic design. These molded fiberglass armchairs are true to the originals and are fully authentic, with updated materials to meet environmental requirements. Their enduring forms and quality construction make them comfortable, durable performers.

Fine workmanship on an eye catching design
Comments about Herman Miller Eames Molded Fiberglass Rocker:
This chair is such a classic. I would find myself admiring it as a piece of art if I could somehow manage to get out of it! I chose the color Parchment with the chrome base and walnut rockers. I went with the fiberglass over the plastic version for a few reasons. The white color isn't the completely stark, bright white that you see on the plastic version. It's a hint off white in my eyes. It just seems to throw off a more homely vibe instead of a completely perfect hospital white feel that I get from the plastic version. Every fiberglass piece is unique. There are little details that will be specific to your chair only. Embrace them. Along with the beautiful curves of this piece, the chair just seems to convey an organic feeling. I don't know how to explain it really. You just have to have one in your living room to know what I'm talking about.
As far as construction goes, all of the edges of the fiberglass have been sanded to give it a super smooth feel with no rough spots. The matte finish on the walnut rocker legs is perfect, and the wood on the legs was flawless.
You can really appreciate the hard work that went into designing this chair. The chair is very comfortable and just the right size for my wife and I. The arms are a good height and not too big or small. The chair itself doesn't take up a huge footprint on the floor, and you can move it around easily to different parts of the room. The sitting position is relaxed, but you can still be attentive to a guest. The rocking motion is small and seems perfect for reading, relaxing, or rocking a baby to sleep.
In conclusion, I'd buy this again in a heartbeat. It's beautiful and comfortable to sit in. The fit and finish are great, and I expect it to last for the rest of my life.
