Flute Light by Herman Miller
designed by Tom Newhouse
At A Glance:
This modern desk lamp does more than just maintain Herman Miller's stance on environmentally friendly design - it takes it to a whole new level. Utilizing advanced LED technology, the Flute Lamp costs a mere $1.13 to use for an entire year. Made in the United States, Flute is 85 percent recyclable and has a 24-year lifespan.
Flute's high-output LED chips require no bulb replacement or service over the estimated 24-year life span with average use. So you also save big on small maintenance costs. Flute provides 160 lumens of light, a color temperature of 3500k and a Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 87**, which is plenty - just what you need in a task light. Medium-warm light is emitted, which is friendly to the eyes. It makes your desk visible and clear without being too harsh or bright.
What's To Like:
This freestanding desk lamp has a head that swivels 230 degrees from left to right, so you can focus the light where you need it easily. A 360-degree rotating clamp mount option provides the maximum flexibility in light placement. User-friendly in all kinds of ways, including what it weighs: two pounds for the freestanding model, 1.5 pounds for the clamp-mount option. Touch to turn on or off. And with its integrated heat sink, Flute stays cool to the touch, so if you want to pick it up and move it, you won't get burned.
What's Not to Like:
The Flute Light doesn't adjust up and down so you can't bring the light any closer to your desk than it sits over your work.
The Bottom Line:
The Herman Miller Flute Light provides a flexible, economical light source for any desk, and looks especially at home in the modern office with its clean, intuitive lines.
**The Color Rendering Index, or CRI, describes how a given light source renders the color of an object. Ranging from a scale of 0 to 100, CRI measures the given light source's ability to reproduce colors of various objects when compared to an ideal or natural light source. The higher the CRI, the better color rendering ability.

About the Designer
Tom Newhouse"I can't remember a time when I wasn't planning, designing, and building. If our class put on a play, I'd build the set. If something broke, I'd fix it. I've always loved to find out how things work."
Tom credits his father, a self-taught engineer, with nourishing this fascination with the mechanical world. His father always had a logical, rational way of explaining Tom's questions about science and technology. Balancing this pragmatism was his mother, whose sculptures, paintings, and aesthetic sensibilities "showed me a whole other way of looking at the world."
The complementary influences of his parents show through in his designs. They are evident in the passive solar house he built for his family in the mid 1970s. His professional work- exhibits, interiors for the handicapped, lighting, commercial furnishings, kitchen appliances- all testify to his wide-ranging talents and intellectual curiosity.
