Steelcase constantly invests in user research as part of the design process. Three key discoveries from a global medical study over four years that included 732 users inspired Steelcase's Amia.
1. The spine does not move as a single unit. Independent movements in a person's upper and lower back need to be supported by a dynamic backrest. Therefore, LiveLumbar support is hidden in the Amia's backrest and moves forward to fill in the gap around your lower back.
2. Every individual's spinal motion is unique. As an individual changes posture, the backrest needs to mimic spinal motions. Therefore, the Amia uses flexors that move up and down to create a sliding support zone.
